기억 속의 흔적에 대한 표현연구

Abstract

People share numerous memories as time goes by. Memories in a life are transformed and accumulated with lapse of time; they are stored with a vaguely opaque feeling. When one feels the absence of the object due to disappearance or loss, one can vividly recall the related memory with a renewed significance. The sense of loss, ironically, makes the related memory special and different from other memories. Once registered as special, the memory takes on a new meaning even if it consists of the same substance and is stored at the same place with other memories. That is, even if the object is an ordinary stuff that we can easily find around us, the object imbued with memory becomes irreplaceable with others. This medium is not limited to concrete objects; its range can be broad including scent, time, rhythm, color, and anything that can recall the object. The impact is proportionate to the importance of the object. In this study, the motive of the work was my memories of the father that have a special meaning for me. He was, is, and will always be a fence for my life. By saying ‘fence,’ I mean a place to lean on. While mother represents tenderness, father represents firmness. The relationship between me and my father was very special, even more than many mother-daughter relationships. The objective of the study was to express images of memory and trace found in the objects that contain my memory of the father. To present the vestige of memory, which becomes increasingly precious due to absence of my father and his great influence on my life, I explored our time spent together and identify objects that remind me of his behaviors and habits. I attempted to reproduce them physically along with memory, cast them in paraffin, and also transformed them partially. To renew and reproduce my memory of the father that changes and becomes obscure with time, I adopted a method of ‘casting’ for reproduction, and material of ‘paraffin’ that presents ‘opaqueness’ of time. As people say about ‘spirit in material,’ despite the industrial quality and standard format of the material, I chose to do active intervention through boiling, melting, pouring, hardening, burning and scorching to link paraffin with the act of finding mark of memory. I thought I could grant personal meaning to ordinary objects around me by seeking mark of memory and tracing the vestige of memory left in the unconsciousness. Casting actual objects was quite effective in exploring inner memory of the objects and the trace of their meanings. By discovering memory and sign of an individual, the present and the past cross each other, and the renewed memory of the past helps me to reflect upon myself as well as make my life more vibrant.;사람들은 살아가면서 수많은 기억을 공유하게 된다. 삶에서 얻어진 이러한 기억은 시간의 흐름에 따라 변형되고 축적되는 과정을 거치게 되며 어렴풋이 느껴지는 불투명성의 느낌으로 저장되게 된다. 이러한 기억이 새로운 의미를 갖게 되어 선명하게 인지될 때는 주로 이 기억과 관련된 대상의 소멸 혹은 상실로 인해 그 부재를 인지할 때이며 특정 대상의 소멸로 인한 상실감이 역설적으로 그 대상과의 기억을 특별하게 인지하여 다른 기억과 차별화하게 만드는 계기가 된다. 특별하게 인지된 기억은 다른 기억과 그 구성매체, 예를 들어 동일한 장소, 동일한 사물로 구성되었다고 하더라도 그 의미에 있어서 차별화될 수 밖 에 없다. 다시 말해 특별한 기억과 연계된 사물은 비록 그것이 주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 일상재라 할지라도 내게 있어선 다른 것과 대체할 수 없는 유일한 것으로 인지된다. 이런 매개체는 비단 사물에만 국한된 것은 아니며 소멸된 대상을 떠올리게 하는 모든 것들, 예를 들어 향기, 시간, 운율, 색깔 등 그 범위는 광범위하다고 할 수 있으며 소멸 대상의 의미가 주체에게 있어 크면 클수록 그 영향력은 비례한다고 하겠다. 특히 본 연구에서는 본인에게 있어서는 다른 기억과는 달리 특별한 의미를 갖는 것으로서 아버지에 대한 기억을 모티브로 하여 전개하였다. 아버지는 본인에게 있어 과거, 현재는 물론 미래에도 울타리와 같은 존재이며, 다른 가정의 모녀 관계보다 더 특별했다. 본 연구에서는 아버지의 부재 안에서의 기억을 더듬어 보기 위해 아버지와의 추억이 담겨있는 사물을 통하여 기억과 흔적을 찾아 그 이미지를 표현하는데 목적이 있다. 본인에게 여려 면으로 큰 영향을 주셨던 아버지의 부재로 인하여 더욱 소중하게 느껴지는 기억의 흔적을 표현하기 위하여 일반적 사물 중, 아버지와 함께 한 시간, 세대 안에서 아버지의 기억을 더듬어보고 아버지의 일상생활에서의 행동, 습관을 상기시키는 관련 대상들을 찾아 기억과 함께 물리적으로 재생시키고, 파라핀으로 캐스팅하여 부분적으로 변형을 시키는 작업을 하였다. 조금씩 변형되고 어렴풋해지는 아버지의 기억을 재생 또는 재현시키기 위하여 갖고 있는 사물의 개입을 통해 ‘복제’의 방법인 ‘캐스팅’을 이용하고, 시간의 흐름에 따른 ‘불투명’성을 표현하기 위해서 비슷한 물성을 지니고 있는‘파라핀’을 택하여 표현하였다. ‘물질에 있어서의 정신’이라는 말처럼 산업적인 재료와 규격화된 형식을 가지고 있지만 끓이기, 녹이기, 흘려 붓기, 굳히기, 태우기, 그을리기 등 작가의 적극적인 개입이 파라핀의 물성뿐 아니라 기억의 흔적을 찾는 행위의 일치를 표현하기 위하여 작업을 전개하였다. 기억을 통한 흔적을 찾는 작업은 무의식 속에 남아있는 기억 속의 발자취, 흔적을 추적하는 행위는, 본인을 둘러싼 일상재 안에서 각 사물에 주관적 의미를 부여할 수 있다는 입장으로 진행되었으며, 실 사물을 캐스팅하는 작업 안에서 사물 안의 내면의 기억과 그 의미의 흔적을 찾는데 효과적이었다.
