조선조 주방용 가구와 목기에 관한 연구

Abstract

This research is carried in a way to find out the types, usage, wooden material used, paintings, structure and ornaments on the wooden furniture and instruments/vastly and variably used among those in utilization within kitchen territory of Chosen Dynasty with a view to disclose how their inherent functions and forms are favored to be reasonably adopted to living system of today's modernized soceity. For the performance of this research, a review of lay outs of Chosen Dynasty houses was made in terms of plane structure and 4 kinds of furniture and 59 kinds of wooden instruments among those preserved, displayed and used in these houses were chosen for study. The material for this research was collected through photographing and actual measuring at collegeate and university musuems (Seoul National University, Korea University, Kyunghee University and Ewha Womans University) and further copying portraits and sketches from "the Crafts of LEE Dynasty," "The Folks' and a few others. Also, the t'eory was substantiated by citing some precedent researches. The conclusions derived through the research of material and the theories cited above are as follow: (1) Most of the tools and instruments are domestically made of natural wood using adze or chisel to create variable sizes and shapes and leave cut marks and grain of the wood, which appeal to us with familiarity and naivety. (2) Those made of grass and bamboo are processed by either cutting, slicing, or pealing to be used with excellent sanitary value. (3) They bear comparatively excellent functional efficiency as they were made or invented on the degree of need and the experiences of life. (4) As to the types of wood used as material, zelkova tree, pine tree, gingko tree, wild walnut, linden tree, willow, oak tree, pear tree, The Big Cone Pine and paulownia tree are those mainly used. Also, bamboo and grass were used for small instruments or containers. (5) Daubs and oil varnishing are used not for beautification or ornamental purpose but rather for waterproof and durability. (6) Such compounding methods ar Yonkwi method and Sagae method are primarily used for most of the furniture and gourd bowl for measurement and nine compartmentarized bowl. As ornamants, simple forms of cast iron were used on plates for locking devices, handles and lifts, hinges, clamps, etc. for furniture and picnic boxes in naive shapes. These wooden kitchenwares and instruments for use in kitchen of Chosen Dynasty were found to be very excellent in terms of their functional aspects and they are widely inherited by contemporary home in most original form with limited modifications in the material and usage.;본 연구는 조선조의 주방영역에서 사용되던 기물 중에서 가장 많은 용도로 다양하게 쓰였던 목제 가구와 목기에 대하여 그들의 종류 및 용도, 쓰여진 목재, 도장, 짜임새와 장식 등을 알아보고, 그들은 어떠한 기능과 형태를 지니고있기에, 우리의 현대화되고 있는 주생활에 합리적으로 이용되고 있는가를 고찰해 보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이 연구는 기물이 쓰여지던 주방영역에 대해 조선조 주택의 평면구조를 통하여 알아본 후에, 이 곳에 보관·정리되고 사용하던 기물 중에서 목기물을 택하여 4종의 가구와 59종의 목기로 나누어 고찰하였다. 본 연구의 자료는 대학 박물관(서울대, 고대, 경희대, 이대)과 한국민속박물관, 은양민속박물관 등을 방문하여 사진 촬영 및 실측을 하고, 「이조공예」·「한국의 민속」·「한국민속종합조사보고서」외에 몇 가지 도록을 복사하여 수집하였으며, 선행 연구를 참고로 하여 이론을 뒷받침하였다. 이상의 자료와 이론의 고찰을 통한 결과는 다음과 같다. ① 이들은 대부분이 자연목을 원형 그대로 사용하여, 자귀나 끌 등의 연장을 써서 수공에 의해 만들었기 때문에 각각의 칫수나 형태가 다르고 다양하며, 연장의 자죽이나 목리문이 그대로 나타나기도 하여, 자연스럽고 소박한 멋일 풍기며 친근감을 느끼게 한다. ② 죽·초제품은 재료를 단면으로 자르거나, 가늘게 오리거나, 또는 껍질을 벗기거나 한 것을 사용하여 만들었기 때문에 매우 위생적인 기물로 쓰이기도 했다. ③ 이들은 생활경험과 필요도에 의해 만들어졌기 때문인지 각 용도에 따른 기능면이 대단히 우수한 편이다. ④ 주로 쓰여진 목재로는 과목·송목·항자목·추목·피목·버드나무·참죽나무·배나무·잣나무·오동 등이 있으며, 소기물에는 죽재나 초재 등도 사용되었다. ⑤ 마감 도장으로는 칠도장과 유도장이 미관상 장식용이 아니라 방수나 내구성을 목적으로 주로 사용되었다. ⑥ 짜임새로는 대부분의 가구와 됫박·구절함 등의 기물에 연귀짜임과 사개짜임이 주로 사용되었으며, 장식으로는 가구 외에도 찬합같은 기물의 기능에 알맞은 자물쇠용 앞바탕, 손잡이용 들쇠, 연결부분의 경첩 내지 감잡이 등이 주로 무쇠로 간단하고 소박하게 만들어 진 것을 사용하였다. 이와같은 특징을 지닌 조선조 주방용 목기물은 그 기능면이 대단히 우수한 편이어서, 현대 가정에서도 비록 재료나 용도는 달라지기도 했으나, 옛 형상을 거의 그대로 모방하여 만든 기물이 많이 쓰이고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
