The purpose of this study was to define effect of Special Olympics on social and emotional development of people with intellectual disability. For this purpose, a survey was conducted by a questionnaire on guidance teachers or physical teachers in charge of 136 Participants who had experience in participating in domestic and overseas Special Olympics Games more than one time, and 134 Participants without experience in the games among 270 persons with intellectual disability of eight years and over who have a welfare card with mental retardation, and who were possible to participate in Special Olympics. A questionnaire with 61 questions were used for social and emotional development in this study. For statistics, frequency analysis, t-test and one-way ANOVA methods were applied. The results of this study were as follows. First, participation in Special Olympics had a significant effect on the social and emotional development(p<.01). Second, it showed that sex of participants in Special Olympics was a significant difference in curiosity (p<.01), which female participants had higher social and emotional development than male participants. And age was a significant difference in nondependence on teachers (under 15) and curiosity (from 16 to 20) (p<.05). Third, the result of the participation level (frequency, the number of events, term, the number of training) with the most frequency was a single participation, participation in a event, participation term less than two years, and participation in training once a week. Fourth, according to an analysis of difference in social and emotional development by the participation level (frequency, term, the number of events, the number of training), it showed that preferential participation frequency was a significant difference in internal control, a sense of stability in school, and curiosity (p<.05). And participation term was a significant difference in curiosity (p<.05). In addition, training frequency showed significant difference in nondependence on teachers, internal control, interaction with the age, a sense of stability in school, and accomplishment motive (p<.05). The result of this study suggested that Special Olympics would improve social and emotional development of people with intellectual disability positively which we could conclude strong recommendation of participation in Special Olympics required to people with intellectual disability.;본 연구는 지적장애인을 대상으로 하는 스포츠 활동인 스페셜올림픽 참여유무가 그들의 사회·정서 발달에 영향을 미치는지를 규명하는데 목적을 두고 있다.
