매튜 본 <백조의 호수>의 문화코드 연구

Abstract

21세기는 문화의 시대로서 문화 그 자체가 국가경쟁력을 의미하고 주도하는 시대이다. 이러한 시기에 현대 관객의 취향에 맞는 문화상품을 만들어 경제적 가치를 창출하는 것은 예술가들의 중요한 임무이며, 이를 위해서는 시대와 문화의 관계 속에서 창조된 기존의 문화상품으로부터 당대의 특이한 문화코드를 파악해내는 일이 중요하다. <백조의 호수 (Swan Lake)>는 19세기에 초연된 이래로 한 세기가 넘는 기간 동안 “사랑과 구원”이라는 인류의 보편적 문화코드를 바탕으로 각 시대의 문화적 특수성을 반영하는 새로운 문화코드를 재탄생시키고 있다. 20세기의 문화를 반영하는 매튜 본의 <백조의 호수>는 19세기의 고전 발레 <백조의 호수>에서는 찾아 볼 수 없는 현대적 문화코드가 존재한다고 할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 매튜 본의 <백조의 호수>의 문화코드를 연구하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 우선 문화기호학적 관점에서 매튜 본의 <백조의 호수>의 명시적 구조를 살펴보기 위한 통합체 분석과 잠재적 구조를 파악하기 위한 계열체 분석, 그리고 롤랑 바르트(Roland Barthes)의 신화분석 방법론을 적용하여 작품을 이루는 다양한 문화 기호들을 추출하고 이들의 사회문화적 함의를 살펴보았다. 연구 결과 ‘남자 백조’라는 양성성(androgyny)의 인물유형, 1960년대 영국 대중문화를 반영하는 다양한 문화기호들과 그들의 사회문화적 함의인 신화(myth)를 파악하였으며, 이를 토대로 “금기시된 사랑의 코드”, “풍자 코드”, “탈 고정관념의 코드”, “사실주의적 코드”, “성(sexuality) 코드”, “현실과 이상에 관한 보편적 코드” 등 여섯 가지의 문화코드를 발견 할 수 있었다. 이 여섯 가지의 문화코드는 매튜 본 <백조의 호수>의 심층에서 스토리, 구조, 개별적 기호의 설정 등에 관여하면서 작품의 정체성을 규정하고 있다. 이는 19세기의 <백조의 호수>에서 보여주는 단순한 왕자의 사랑과 구원에 관한 이야기와는 차별화된 문화코드로 볼 수 있으며, 양성적 존재로서 한 인간이 성(性)과 계급, 그리고 종(種)을 초월한 자유로운 사랑의 이상을 추구하고 죽음을 통한 비현실의 세계에서 이상을 실현한다는 의미를 부여하는 문화코드로서 매튜 본 <백조의 호수>는 20세기의 무용문화에 새로운 문화적 의미를 제공한 문화콘텐츠라 할 수 있겠다. 따라서 본 연구에서 발견된 문화코드는 현대의 관객이 선호하는 핵심적인 문화코드로서 새로운 무용 문화콘텐츠 개발의 기반으로 활용될 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구는 문화기호학적 관점에서 무용작품을 분석한 논문으로서 보다 체계적이고 객관적인 분석 기준을 제시하고 무용작품에 대한 다양한 해석의 가능성을 제공하였다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.;The 21st century is the age of culture, and it is the age when the culture itself implies and takes the nation's competitiveness initiative. It is the important duty for the artists to create the economic value of arts by producing the cultural products that fit to the tastes of modern audience, and for the purpose of creation, it is important for them to seize the unique cultural codes from the contemporary and existing cultural products created in the relationship between the age and culture. The <Swan Lake> has been giving rebirth to the cultural code that reflects the cultural specialty of each age on the basis of universal cultural code of mankind, the so-called "Love and Rescue", for more than a century since the first performance in the 19th century. It is possible to say that there exists a modern cultural code in the Matthew Bourne's <Swan Lake> that reflects the culture of 20th century, which is not seen in the <Swan Lake> that shows the classical cultural code of the 19th century. And so, in this study, it was attempted to study the cultural codes of the Matthew Bourne's <Swan Lake>. And for this, the paradigmatic analysis was carried out to take a look at the expressed structure of the work appearing in the Matthew Bourne's <Swan Lake> and catch hold of the analysis of integrated body and potential structure, and the various cultural codes, which constitutes the work, were drawn out to examine the social and cultural implication. As a result of the study, the type of character containing the androgyny of "Male Swan", the various cultural codes reflecting the popular culture of England in 1960s and the myth that contains their social and cultural implication were figured out, and the six types of cultural codes, such as "Code of prohibited love", "Code of satire ", "Code to break away from fixed ideas", "Code of realism", "Code of sexuality", and "Universal codes for reality and ideal", were derived from the analysis. The six types of cultural codes prescribe the identity of the work, engaging in the story, structure and establishment of individual codes at the depth of the Matthew bourn's <Swan Lake>. This shall be identified as a differentiated cultural code from the simple story of love and rescue of a prince presented in the <swan Lake> of 19th century, and the Matthew Bourne's <Swan lake> may be called the cultural contents that provide the dance culture of 20th century with a new cultural significance, setting up an cultural code in which a human of androgynous existence seeks the ideal love that transcend the sex, class and species and realizes the ideal in the unrealistic world through death. Therefore, the cultural codes derived from this study will be able to be used as the base of the development of new dance culture contents, playing the role of the core cultural code that the modern spectators like. The significance of this study lies in the presentation of more systematic and objective analysis standard and providing the possibilities of various interpretation for the dance works as it is focused on the analysis of dance works from the view point of cultural semiotics.
