The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomena engendered by the introduction of western modernism into creative Korean dance in the 1980s and 1990s in an attempt to grasp the identity of post- modernistic creative Korean dance. In order for creative Korean dance to be approved by one of unique dance styles on the global stage, that should aim at reinventing itself to be of a unique Korean style and having a unique national identity in it, instead of unconditionally accepting western styles. Therefore it's meant in this study to delve into the background of western postmodernism in association with its relationship with modernism, the shifting concepts of it and its pluralistic characteristics. Besides, the flow of creative Korean dance was analyzed to find out the types of its postmodernism to determine some of the right directions for creative Korean dance in the 21st century marked by distinctive paradigm shift. There have been post modernistic trends since 1960s, and postmodernism was defined as a universal term that referred to the period after modernism, as its concept and sphere were enlarged. The pluralism of postmodernism approved of diversity and received modernism as one of the trends of thought. And that made it possible to determine future directions by looking back on history and tradition. Thus, the efforts to look into the history and region specificity of pluralism served as a wakeup call for the unconditional reception of western early modern values. We should build a historical consciousness of our own in consideration of the specificity of our country. Creative Korean dance in the 1980s could be classified into two: semi-modernism and demodernism. In that age, demodernism was a concept that made it possible to overcome the improper phenomenon that semi-modernism initially introduced as what's contrast to existing creative Korean dance was extended to every genre. Demodernism took a step forward to pluralism, which was different from aggressive semi-modernism, and built the foundation for forthcoming creating Korean-type postmodernism. Since the 1990s, rapid economic growth brought a change to living environments, and that was followed by the post-cold war era and the spread of democracy. All the phenomena contributed to instilling various aesthetic consciousnesses, such as pluralism, into creative Korean dance, and post modernism became a barometer of the true nature of life. In that period, a lot of theories appeared in the field of creative Korean dance, which was classified into three: deformal type, political type and new technology type. The deformality deconstructed the story of creative Korean dance works that focused on narrative structure, and that replaced existing narrative structure with writer-centered structure. There were deformal movements in an attempt to make a compromise between the technical dynamicity, which was generated by the variation of Korean dance motions and unique Korean dance breathing, and the components of modern dance. The political type of dance evolved in association with feminism that advocated oppressed women, and there was a tendency for that to make a reinterpretation of tradition from modern perspective to express more popular and playful themes. The new technology type of dance was characterized by plural and multi-dimensional holism and urged creative Korean dance to pursue synthetic and holistic art. Postmodernistic creative Korean dance justified pluralism as a new value, and took a broader look at the structural problems with post-capitalistic society in the fields of politics, economy and culture, and attempted to link the western world to Korea. In conclusion, the postmodernism of creative Korean dance was initiated by waking up to the reality of our country. Those who took the initiative in the renaissance of creative Korean dance tried to get out of the values of the older generation that was dissatisfied with reality. And they found their identity in noticing the changes of the times and creating creative Korean dance as a new paradigm. It's now time to take a glocalistic approach to the identity of creative Korean dance by looking for the specificity of Korea from the global perspective instead of merely sticking to western styles. The new vision will contribute to extending the sphere of creative Korean dance and to turning it into global art.-
