연리지(連理枝)로 그려지는 노년기 배우자의 의미

Abstract

노년기는 배우자에 대한 의존성이 높아지고, 배우자가 삶에 미치는 영향력이 그 어느 때보다 높아지는 시기이다. 따라서 노년기는 삶의 지지자로서 배우자의 의미와 그 역할이 중요시되는 시기라 할 수 있다. 이에 2000년 이후 나타나고 있는 인구의 고령화와 기대수명의 연장 그리고 노년기 부부가구의 증가와 같은 사회?인구학적인 변화는 노년기 배우자와 부부관계에 대한 관심과 연구의 중요성을 부각시키고 있다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 질적 연구의 한 전통인 해석학적 현상학의 연구방법론을 적용하여 노년기 부부의 목소리를 통해 그들이 결혼생활에서 체험하고 있는 배우자의 의미가 무엇인가를 이해하고자 하였다. 본 연구에는 60대 초반부터 80대 초반까지의 9쌍의 부부, 18명이 참여하였다. 질적 인터뷰를 통해 자료를 수집하였고, 인터뷰 기간은 2007년 5월부터 2008년 2월까지 10개월이 소요되었다. 인터뷰 시간은 참여자 별로 보통 2~4시간으로, 참여자마다 1~3회 이상의 인터뷰를 실시하였다. 인터뷰 장소로는 참여자의 집으로 방문하였다. 인터뷰 질문은 참여자가 가능한 자유롭게 자신의 생각을 표현할 수 있도록 구조화 하지 않았으나, 인터뷰가 원활하게 진행될 수 있도록 주제와 관련된 넒은 질문과 확인을 위한 보조질문을 하였다. 그리고 연구과정에서 참여자의 윤리적인 측면을 보호하기 위해 인터뷰 전에 연구자인 나에 대한 소개와 더불어 본 연구의 목적과 연구방법 그리고 연구과정을 참여자에게 설명하였다. 참여자의 동의를 통해 인터뷰의 전 과정을 녹음한 후, 전체 인터뷰 자료를 텍스트로 옮겨 분석자료를 마련하였다. 본 연구에서는 van Manen의 전체적 그리고 선택적 접근법에 따른 분석과정을 거쳤으며, 텍스트와의 계속적인 대화 그리고 참여자와의 계속되는 대화를 통해 테마에 대한 ‘상호주관적 합의’가 이루어졌다. 본 연구는 4개의 테마로 구성되어 있다. 첫 번째, 두 번째 테마는 아내와 남편이 각각 삶의 과정에서 체험한 자신의 배우자에 대한 의미이다. 세 번째 테마는 삶의 과정에서 축적된 결과로써 현재 부부가 체험하고 있는 배우자의 의미이다. 네 번째 테마는 지금까지의 테마를 아우르는 통합적인 시각이다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 삶의 과정에서 아내와 남편은 자신의 배우자에 대해 원망과 은혜로 함축되는 상이한 의미를 부여하고 있었다. 하지만 노년의 부부는 삶의 축적된 결과로서 서로에게 하나 된 의미를 부여하고 있었다. 그러나 그들이 서로에게 부여한 하나 된 의미를 바라보는 데에는 아내와 남편의 서로 다른 시각이 존재하고 있었다. 이렇듯 부부가 드러내는 배우자의 의미를 나는 나무로 설명하고자 했다. 그들의 체험은 마치 두개의 나무가 어떠한 계기로 종국에는 하나의 나무가 되어서도 각자의 본래의 특성대로 서로 다른 꽃을 피우며 조화롭게 살아가는 연리지를 닮아 있었다. 즉, 삶의 과정에서 그리고 삶의 축적된 결과로써 부부는 ‘따로 또 같이’처럼 서로에 대한 의미를 부여하고 있었으며, 서로의 삶의 연속성 그 중심에 서서 과거와 현재 그리고 미래를 연결해 주고 있었다. 결국 배우자는 서로의 삶을 재구성해 주는 존재였다. 이처럼 연리지로 그려지는 노년기 부부의 체험을 통해 그동안 체험의 기저에 숨어 피상적으로 설명되던 배우자의 의미라는 본질을 드러낼 수 있었다는 데에 본 연구의 의의를 둘 수 있다.;The purpose of this thesis is to understand the essence of meaning for his/her spouse with who the married elderly has experienced during their marital life. For this thesis, we applied 'Hermeneutic Phenomenological methodology' which is one of traditionally qualitative research methodologies to this study. This methodology helps participant bring up the intrinsic nature of experience in person in order to understand his/her life truly through uncovered intrinsic nature of experience. The 9 married couples from early 60's to early 80's was taken part in this study. I selected qualitative interviews as data gathering and analyzed with van Manen's wholistic and selective approaches This study is consisted of three parts as below ; First, how process the married couple make the meaning of spouse in their marital life, and then how reconstruct the meaning of spouse accumulated in the marital life's process in their present old age. Finally, we see the meaning of spouse that the participating married couples bring up. The results of this study are as below ; In the progress of life, husband and wife makes the different meaning that is implying a hatred and a favor each other. On the other hand, married elderly couple makes the same meaning each other as a result accumulated through their life. But there are different views between husband and wife for seeing a same meaning. So I want to describe participant's meaning of spouse as a tree. Their experiences are looks like 'Yeonriji' which lives harmoniously blooming each different flowers due to each nature's feature although two different trees turn into one tree. In other words, a married couple is making the meaning of spouse 'separately and together' as a result accumulated from life. In the conclusion, a spouse means who is reconstructing the other person's life. The present study has a significance that we can bring up the intrinsic nature of experience described superficially in the base of experience through the married elderly couple's experience described as 'Yeonriji' like this.
