기호 이미지를 통한 기억의 상징적 표현

Abstract

Without citing the saying ‘Human beings are social animals,’ no one cannot disagree that everyone today is building the world by means of communication with each other. Every human being is searching a quick and accurate means to deliver his or her message to others – this is a sign. Covering traffic signs, various signboards, and diversified logos, signs and symbols go together with the history of human beings. Sign images made by humans reflect reality and are closely related with what artists pursue from the start. Artists follow the concept of representation to communicate with the audience or others. Here, representation has been expanded to expression of various objects ranging from visual and outer appearance to concepts and ideas. Transforming actual objects into artistic works is showing actual images occurring to artists through the process of making them signs as an artistic work. In this course, the image generated by an artistic work shows more clearly than lengthy writings. Artists communicate the world and create unique reality to him or her, by making reality a sign. For the author, representing reality is re-presenting memories and experiences in the world surrounding the author, with these memories being visualized through symbolic expressions in a work. Symbols add allegorical meaning to signs and have such meaning with the passage of time. In a dictionary, a symbol is defined as two different elements combined to represent a new idea. In the work of the author, symbols are found in commonplace signs in our society and fusion of mark images and sign images having personal symbolism. When combined two images appear to be a new sign image, re-drawn images of body parts such as faces or hands reflect psychological and inner state of the time. That is to say, the fusion of outer and inner psychological state and most noticeable sign images serves to remind memories and resolutions, lessons, and message, which are forgotten as time goes by. The expression to symbolize memories as sign images is a method in the framework of sign images which can deliver uncertain segments of memories most clearly and creates memories or experiences of the author and viewers in some cases or produces a new subjective sign to elicit ideas in other cases, by mixing two objects with totally different independent meanings. Although newly created sign images in the work may take the form of widespread typical signs, they can be differently interpreted depending on viewers’ perspectives, regardless the artist’s intention. Sometimes, the focus is on fragmented images of memories of personal life, or on superficial images surrounding him or her. As the fusion of everyday images and personal images is the center, viewers may accept them universally. However, combination of universal image and personal sign image on the basis of their similarities may become a new sign image to the author, recalling the past and reminding what must be remembered through the work of the author, as picture diaries in the childhood did. Human beings are forming their ego depending on their experiences and past, present, and future, communicating and recognizing the world. In the work of the author, ‘signs of memories’ function as a medium to hold the outside world and inner world and as a bridge to connect the present ego and the past ego, and the outside world, by symbolizing what you do not want to forget and lessons and meaning at that time. Despite their frequent appearance in our daily lives, uniformed patters of the signs in the work help relate to and communicate with his or her memories more than the desired meaning. Thus, sign images and fragmented images of memories are combined to communicate with the artists and furthermore accept others or the inner and outer world of the past and present and seek to express images to symbolize memories newly, through psychological effects. In light of formative art, to represent fragments of memories, images were used as if processed with Cut-out, a filtering program to make images simple as a section of Photoshop, and as for superficial expression of sign images, shaped canvas in the form of common place signs or marks was used. It is expected that this article will provide an opportunity for the development into more profound and diversified artistic work, by examining works of the author on the ground of theories of signs and symbols and symbolization of memories.;인간은 ‘사회적 동물’이라는 말을 굳이 상기하지 않아도 현재 이 시대에 살고 있는 개개인은 서로간의 소통을 통해 세계를 구축해 나가고 있다는 사실에 반대하는 사람은 없을 것이다. 다른 사람에게 자신의 의사를 전달하기 위해 인간은 빠르고 정확한 무언가를 찾기 마련이다. 그것이 바로 기호이다. 이 세계는 교통표지판, 각종 간판들, 다양한 로고에서 한낱 손동작에 이르기까지 기호와 상징을 통해 인류의 역사와 함께해 왔다. 인간이 만들어내는 기호 이미지들은 실재를 반영하는 것으로 애시당초 예술가들이 추구하는 바와 밀접한 관련이 있다. 예술가들은 관람객 혹은 타인과 소통하기 위해 재현의 개념을 따라왔다. 여기서 말하는 재현은 시각적이고 외형적인 모습 뿐만 아니라 개념이나 생각에 이르기까지 다양한 대상을 표현하는 것으로 확장되었다. 작가를 통해 실재의 대상물이 미술작품으로 치환되는 것은 곧 작가가 떠올리는 실재의 이미지를 미술작품으로 기호화 시켜 관객에게 보여주는 것이다. 이 과정에서 미술작품이 만들어 내는 이미지는 길게 쓰여진 글보다 명백하게 작가의 주관을 나타내는 역할을 한다. 작가는 실재를 기호화 시킴으로써 세계와 소통하고 그만의 리얼리티(reality)를 만들어 내는 것이다. 본인에게 있어 실재를 표현한다는 것은 본인을 둘러싼 외부 세계와의 기억과 경험을 재현하는 것이며 작품 안에서 이러한 기억들이 상징적 표현에 의해 시각화된다. 상징은 기호에 우의적 의미를 더한 것으로 시간이 지남에 따라 그 의미를 갖게 되는 것이다. 사전상의 의미로 상징은 두 가지의 이질적인 것이 결합하여 새로운 형태를 나타내는 것으로, 본인의 작업에서는 사회에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 기호, 부호 이미지와 개인적인 상징성을 가지고 있는 기호 이미지의 혼용이 그것이다. 결합된 두 이미지가 새로운 기호 이미지로 나타났을 때 그 안에 다시 그려진 얼굴이나 손 등의 신체 이미지는 당시의 내면적, 심리적 상태를 반영하고 있다. 즉, 외면적, 내면적 심리 상태와 가장 뚜렷했던 기호 이미지들의 혼용으로 기억을 되살리고 시간이 지나면서 망각되어지는 그때의 다짐, 교훈, 메시지를 되짚어보는 역할을 한다. 기억을 기호 이미지로 상징화하는 표현은 당시 불분명하게 남아 있는 기억의 단편적 이미지들을 가장 뚜렷하게 전달할 수 있는 기호 이미지들의 틀 속에 나타내는 방식으로 전혀 다른 독립적 의미를 가진 두 가지의 대상의 결합을 통해 본인과 보는 이의 기억이나 경험, 혹은 생각을 이끌어 내는 주관적인 새로운 기호를 만들어낸다. 작품에서 새롭게 만들어진 기호 이미지들은 흔히 보아왔던 전형적인 기호의 형태를 가지고 있을 수도 있지만 본래의 의도와는 관련없이 보는 이의 해석에 따라 다르게 받아들여질 수 있다. 자신의 삶의 배경으로 해서 기억의 단편적 이미지에 초점을 맞출 경우도 있고 그것을 둘러싼 외형적 이미지에 중점을 두는 경우도 있다. 일상 생활에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 이미지와 개인적 이미지와의 혼용을 중심으로 하기 때문에 보는 이에게는 보편적으로 받아들여질 수 있다. 하지만 보편적 이미지와 개인적 기호 이미지의 공통점을 통하여 그 둘을 결합시킨 것이기 때문에 본인에게는 새로운 기호 이미지가 될 수 있고 본인의 작업들을 통해 어렸을 때 그림일기를 그리듯이 다시금 예전을 회상하고 망각해서는 안되는 것들에 대해 자각시키는 계기를 준다. 인간은 경험과 과거, 현재, 미래에 따라 자아를 형성해 나가고 세계와 소통하며 그것을 인식하고 인지해 나가면서 자아를 형성해 간다. 본인의 작품에 표현하는 ‘기억의 기호’들은 외부 세계와 내면 세계를 잡아주는 매개체 역할을 하면서 망각하고 싶지 않거나 당시 상황이 주는 교훈과 의미를 상징화시켜주면서 현재의 자신과 당시의 자신, 그리고 외부와 소통하는 다리 역할을 해주는 것이다. 작품에서 보여지는 기호 형태는 일상에서도 많이 볼 수 있는 것이지만 그 정형화된 형태는 본래의 의미 이상으로 자신의 기억과의 소통과 연상을 도와주는 것이다. 이처럼 기호 이미지와 기억의 단편적 이미지들이 하나가 되어 작가 자신과 소통함으로써 자신, 타인, 혹은 과거와 현재의 내면과 외부 세계를 받아들이고 심리적 효과를 만들어 기억을 새롭게 상징화하는 이미지를 표현하기 위한 것이다. 조형적 측면에서 기억의 단편을 나타내기 위해 포토샾 프로그램에서 이미지를 단면형태로 단순화시키는 필터링 프로그램인 cut-out기법을 사용한 듯한 이미지를 사용하였으며 기호적 이미지에 대한 외형적 표현으로는 흔히 볼 수 있는 기호나 부호 형태의 shaped canvas기법을 사용하였다. 본 논문을 통해 기호와 상징 그리고 기억에 대한 상징화를 바탕으로 한 이론을 배경으로 본인의 작업을 분석하고 연구해봄으로써 좀 더 심화되고 다양한 작업으로 발전할 수 있기를 기대한다.
