조장은의 그림일기

Abstract

As opposed to a diary, which is a written record of one's daily thoughts or feelings, a drawing uses lines and colors for a similar purpose: expressing what is in the heart by making it visible. However, both of the methods-writing and drawing-are incorporated in my work; to make the theme more understandable, I have added to the pictorial image a language as if I was writing a diary. Portrayed in my work are a mixture of meaningful incidents and both merry and cloudy memories, expressed in my own style. This certainly has been a much more special experience than merely drawing a visible object. Certainly, no artist would be inspired by things that are irrelevant to his or her own experiences; for it is what can be experienced by the artist that will be touched by his or her hands and eventually take the form of a masterpiece. Interpreted this way, I believe that any kind of art can be seen in a way as a kind of a dairy of the artist. Nonetheless, here I distinctly name my work Pictorial Diary, for it is my effort to portray my daily life. By going through such work, I have intended to express my thoughts both metaphorically and humorously for the purpose of communicating with myself and others.Although I have focused on my own thoughts and feelings, I believe that my audiences, who are likely to be in my age group, and I have something in common, which should make it possible for us to share a similar vocabulary. For this very reason-to communicate-I have chosen to talk about myself in my Pictorial Diary. As for the following thesis, which is based upon my Pictorial Diary, I have explored the background - the inspiration, motivation, and progress-of my work. I have also studied Nan Goldin, who also incorporates a pictorial diary style in her work, and observed other artists' approach to a similar method. Also summarized are the component and the uniqueness of my style that are all built upon the theme of my work. Specifically, the components are: self portrayal, generation bond, and daily routines; the uniqueness of my style refers to: the usages of letter and images, humorous and vernacular expressions. A picture with unique and deep color was the goal for the 'tool'-jangji colored by mixed glaze- that I have used in my work, which was assisted by my research on the usage of both illustrate-like expression and color. Finally, by dividing the analysis of my work into separate steps, I have offered the over-all picture of my Pictorial Dairy. By summarizing the results of my further research on each of the expressional methods and meanings, I have challenged myself for continuous improvements. All of these procedures have enabled me to have an overall concept and a theoretical foundation of my work. They also have served the purpose of providing an opportunity for exploring possibilities for my future works.;일기가 그날그날 겪은 일상생활 속의 생각이나 느낌을 글로써 표현한 개인의 기록이라면, 그림은 선과 색을 이용하여 이룬 작업이다. 일기와 그림의 공통분모를 찾자면 아마도 자신의 마음을 그대로 옮겨놓는 점이라 할 수 있을 것이다. 본인의 작업에는 글과 그림 이 두 가지의 다른 표현 방식이 공존한다. 흔히 이미지로만 나타나는 그림에 일기적 소재로서의 언어를 차용하여 주제를 이해하기 쉽게 전달하고자 하였다. 본인은 소소한 일상과 그 안에서 벌어지는 소중한 에피소드, 기쁘고 슬픈 여러 가지 감정들을 자화상으로 그려보고자 하였다. 이는 본인에게 어떤 아름다운 것을 보고 그리는 것 보다 의미 있는 일이었다. 물론 어떤 화가도 자신과 전혀 상관없는 곳에서 영감을 받아 그림을 그리지는 않을 것이다. 예술가가 살아가면서 무엇인가 느끼고 그것을 표현함으로써 사상도 사물도 예술이 되는 것이다. 이런 관점에서는 모든 예술이 예술가의 일기가 될 수 있다고 생각한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 스스로 본인의 작업을 그림일기라고 명명하는 것은 무엇보다 어린 시절의 그것처럼 일상생활을 통해 드러난 본인의 삶을 직접적으로 나타낸 그림이기 때문이다. 본인은 이러한 그림일기 작업을 통하여 일상과 생각들을 함축적이고 해학적으로 표현함으로써 일차적으로 스스로와 소통하고자 하였으며, 그것을 대중에게 공개함으로써 보는 이들과도 소통하고자 하였다. 그림 속 내용에는 개인이 느낀 것이지만 같은 시대, 같은 나이대가 겪을 수 있는 공통분모가 있기 때문에 작가와 관객이 공감을 주고받을 수 있다고 생각하였다. 이것이 본인의 사적인 이야기가 그림일기 형식으로 작품화 된 이유이다. 이러한 작업 내용을 바탕으로 본 논문에서는 본인의 그림일기의 배경에 대하여 탐색하면서 그림일기 작업을 하기까지의 동기와 과정을 되짚어 보았으며, 본인의 작업과 닮아있는 사진 일기 작가 낸 골딘에 대하여 알아봄으로써 다른 예술가가 일기 형식으로 작업을 대하는 태도를 살펴보았다. 또한 본인의 그림일기에 있어서 중요한 키워드를 중심으로 일기를 이루는 내용과 표현방식에 대하여 정리해 보았다. 내용에 있어서는 자화상, 세대 공감, 일상의 서술의 측면을, 표현에 있어서는 언어와 이미지의 공존, 해학적 표현, 민화적 요소를 들어 자세한 특징을 살펴보았다. 장지에 분채로 채색된 본인 작업의 조형적인 특징으로는 일러스트적 표현과 색채의 운용에 대하여 연구해봄으로써 더욱 개성있고 심도있는 채색화를 지향하고자 하였다. 마지막으로 시리즈로 나누어 본 개별 작품 분석을 통하여 작품의 흐름을 살펴보고 개별적인 표현 형식과 내용적 의미를 연구하여 지나온 작업을 정리하고 더욱 발전된 형태의 표현방법을 모색하고자 하였다. 이로써 본인은 작업의 큰 틀을 형성하고, 본인이 작품에서 표현하고자 하는 바를 이론적으로 성립함과 동시에 앞으로의 작업 방향을 탐색해 보는 기회로 삼고자 하였다.
