그림일기로 표현된 작품의 상징성에 대한 연구

Abstract

현대사회는 획일화되어, 개인의 삶에 한계성을 느끼게 하고, 우리의 의식 속에 존재하고 있는 자유 의지를 억압하며, 우리는 그 억압에서 벗어나고자 내적으로 갈망하고 있다. 본인은 이와 같은 삶의 한계성과 억압에서 벗어나는 대안을 작품 안에서 모색하던 중, 그림일기에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 그림일기는 솔직히 자신을 표현할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 이와 같은 그림일기의 솔직한 자기표현은 삶에 흥미를 느끼게 하고 감정의 순화에 도움을 준다. 특히, 그림일기는 글로서 자신을 표현할 때보다 더 저항감 없이 무의식과 의식의 세계를 표현할 수 있다. 작품을 할 때 저항감이 적다는 것은 무의식이 상징을 통하여 의식화되기 쉬운 상태를 말한다. 곧, 상징을 통한 내면의 성찰이 글로서 자신을 표현할 때보다 더 쉽게 이루어지는 상태임을 말한다. 이를 위한 구체적인 방법으론, 지름이 20-30센티미터인 원 안에 그림일기형식으로 그 당시의 감정이나 생각을 자유롭게 표현하고, 그렇게 표현한 기록들을 엮음형식으로 재구성하며, 표현된 작품에서 조형요소의 상징적인 의미를 정신분석학에 입각하여 알아보았다. 또한 이를 위하여 2003년부터 2007년까지 OHP, 캔트지, 색지, 장지, 순지, 초배지, 색종이, 색상지등의 다양한 종이를 선택해 유성매직, 파스텔, 수채화 물감, 수묵화 물감, 포스터 물감, 먹물, 색연필, 크레파스, 펜 등의 재료 중 하나를 골라서 드로잉, 붙이기, 꼴라쥬 등의 기법을 이용하여 추상적으로 때론 사실적으로 작품을 제작하였는데, 이렇게 표현한 개별적인 작품은 조형적인 특징이 유사한 것끼리 엮음형식으로 묶어서 다시 한 작품으로 제작하였다. 솔직한 표현을 돕고 내면세계의 저항을 적게 하기 위해 제작 시간과 재료는 임의의 시간과 임의의 재료로 하였다 작품의 크기를 20-30센티미터로 정한 이유도 칼G.융의 ‘만다라와 미술치료’에서 제시하는 가장 저항감이 적고 편하게 작업을 할 수 있는 조건이었기 때문이다. 이를 위한 문헌 연구로는, 그림일기에 대한 고찰과 작품에 있어서의 상징성을 연구하였다. 좀 더 세부적으로 살펴보면, 그림일기에 대한 고찰에선 먼저 그림일기의 개념과 특성을 알아보았다. 그리고 미술 분야에서 선행된 일기 형식의 표현에 대해 살펴본 후, 일기형식에 나타나는 심리적 효과에 대해서도 조사하였다. 다음 장에선 정신분석학에 입각하여, 상징이 어떻게 무의식과 의식을 그림에 반영하는지 알아보았다. 이를 위해 상징을 상징의 개념과 기능, 그림에 있어서의 상징, 조형요소의 상징적 의미로 세분화하여 조사하였다. 또한 방법적 연구에선 이론적 배경에서 조사한 문헌을 바탕으로 본인의 작품에서 조형요소들을 색채, 형태, 구도로 나누어 각각의 상징적 의미를 정리하였다. 그리고 본인의 작품에서 표현된 엮음형식에 대해서도 화첩과 비교하여 알아보았다. 작품분석에 있어서는, 색상, 형태, 구도, 제작 방법, 조형적 심미감을 기준으로 작품을 분석하였다. 본 연구는 그림일기를 통해 본인의 생각과 감정을 솔직히 화면에 표현함으로서 작품제작에 흥미를 느끼고 정서적인 순화를 경험할 수 있었다. 또한 작품에 나타난 조형요소들의 상징적 의미를 연구함으로 내면을 성찰할 수 있는 계기가 마련되었다. 그러나 성찰만을 목적으로 하는 연구는 자기목적성이 강하다는 한계를 갖고 있는데, 이에 대한 대안으로 그림의 상징성을 연구하고 타인의 그림도 분석대상으로 삼고 타인에게도 성숙을 향해 나아가야 할 방향을 제시함으로 이러한 그림이 넓은 의미에서 사회적인 기능도 감당할 수 있으리라 여겨진다. 본인은 앞으로도 계속적으로 작품을 통한 내면의 과학적 분석에 심혈을 기울임으로 때때로 주어지는 삶의 과제를 해결하는 발판을 마련하고 그림이 가지는 유용성을 널리 사용하는 계기가 마련되기를 바라는 바이다.;Modern society became standardized, which in turn let individuals to feel the limits of life and suppressed the free will existing in our consciousness; and we have been engaging in an inner struggle to free ourselves from that suppression. The author pondered upon an alternative to the life with limit and suppression, and found an interest in a picture diary. Picture diary has an advantage of expressing the self honestly. This honest expression of the self facilitates people to take interest in life and refine emotions. Particularly, picture diary, which expresses the conscious and the unconscious, poses less resistance to the drawer as opposed to expressing the self in writing. By less resistance I mean it is easier for the unconscious to be converted into conscious through symbolism. In other words, it is a state in which introspection using the tool of symbolism is easier than putting into words in order to express the self. One concrete way of materializing this, the author expressed freely the emotions and thoughts of the moment into a circle with a diameter of 20-30 centimeters in a picture-diary style. The author then reorganized these expressions by weaving into one another, and looked into the symbolic meanings behind formative elements of the expressed art piece in a psychoanalytic perspective. In order to do this, the author, from 2003 to 2007, selected among different kinds of papers such as OHP, kent paper, colored paper, jangji, soonji, lining paper, and square color paper, and then chose one from different materials such as marker, pastel, watercolor, Indian ink color, poster color, Chinese ink, coloring pencil, crayon, and pen; then, using drawing, pasting, and collaging, the author made an abstract and realistic art pieces. These individual pieces were then woven into one another according to similar formative elements, which ultimately became one art piece. To facilitate honest expression and lessen resistance from within, the production duration and materials used were decided upon author's own discretion. The reason in deciding the size of the art piece to be 20-30 centimeters wide was that it is a condition, according to Carl G. Jung's 'Mandala and Art Therapy,' in which there is a least amount of resistance and it is most comfortable to work with. For the literature study, the dissertation explored picture diary and the art piece's symbolism. To be more specific, in exploring picture diary, the author first looked into concepts and properties of the picture diary. Then, the paper delved into diary format expressions already showcased in fine arts, and explored psychological effects seen in the diary format. On the next chapter, the paper looked at how symbols express the conscious and the unconscious into drawing in a psychoanalytic perspective. To do this, the paper broke down symbols into their concepts and properties, symbols in pictures, and symbolic meaning of formative element and explored them. In methodological study, the paper, based on literature researched as a theoretical background, arranged symbolic meanings of the formative elements, which were divided into colors, shapes, and composition. Furthermore, the paper also explored the woven format of the author's art piece in comparison to a sketchbook. In analyzing the art piece, the paper used color, shape, composition, method of production, and formative aesthetic appreciation as its criteria. The dissertation states that through picture diary, the author expressed honest thoughts and emotions into canvas; and in which process, the author took interest in the production of the art piece and experienced emotional refinement. Furthermore, by studying the symbolic meanings behind formative elements expressed in the piece, it was an opportunity for introspection. However, a study whose goal is only introspection acquires a limit stemming from heavy inclination to writing for the sake of the self. As an alternative, this paper studied picture's symbolism and also incorporated pictures of others as targets of analysis, and suggested directions for others to grow. In this way, the author thinks that largely, the picture is capable of carrying societal function as well. The author hopes that, through continuous scientific analysis of the inner self through art pieces, author can provide a stepping-stone to solve life's problems from time to time; and an opportunity for widely employing the usefulness of a picture.
