蔡萬植의 「太平天下」에 나타난 諷刺性 硏究

Abstract

本稿에서는 가히 諷刺文學의 代表作이라 할 수 있는 「太平天下」와 「濁流」中 아직 作品論的인 입장에서 接近이 되어오지 않은 「太平天下」를 통해 蔡 萬植 諷刺文學의 特質을 살펴보고자 한다. 1930年代의 近代文學의 수준에서 踏步하던 韓國小說을 現代文學의 수준으로 끌어올린 作家 蔡 萬植은 「太平天下」를 「朝光」誌에 發表해서 그 文壇的 基盤을 다지고 諷刺文學의 폭을 넓혀갔다. 「太平天下」는 윤직원이라는 白痴를 登場시켜 가장 암담한 時代를 太平時代로 착각하게 하여 처음부터 강렬한 諷刺를 表面으로 드러내는 作品으로 文學을 "人類歷史를 밀고 나가는 한 개의 힘"으로 파악했던 蔡 萬植은 30年代 現實을 直說的으로 쓸 狀況을 잃고 현실감각이 백치인 윤직원을 혹독하게 罵倒함으로서 諷刺의 背景을 사회구조와 現實의 깊은 곳에 두었던 것이다. 그리하여 日帝의 暗黑期를 太平天下라고 하는 親日地主 윤직원의 눈에 비친 화적이나 권총강도, 社會主義者는 일개 불한당일 뿐이나 作家意識으로 보면 이들은 東學徒와 農民의 봉기-獨立運動家-民族運動의 性格이고 人物에 對한 諷刺에 있어서는 친일지주인 윤직원과 對照的으로 日本에서 現實에 對抗하여 社會主義를 하다 警察에 피검된 孫子 종학은 具體的 活動 모습뿐 아니라 人物에 대한 소개도 별로 언급되어 있지 않고 심지어 윤직원에게 있어서 그는 착착 깎아 죽여도 시원치 않을 나쁜 놈으로 취급되고 있다. 이와같이 作家 蔡 萬植은 그의 文學의 特徵인 諷刺性을 肯定할 것은 肯定하는 대신 否定하고, 否定할 것은 否定하는 대신 肯定하는 逆說的인 諷刺法을 써서 作品의 效果를 보여주고 있는 것이다. 물려받은 삼천석의 富로 만석을 일으킨 윤직원과는 영 딴판인 그의 家族들, 돈을 써버리는게 취미인 아들 창식, 尹氏家의 沒落을 치닫게 하는 손자 종학의 社會主義運動 等 「太平天下」의 家族은 이와같이 삼각형의 葛藤에 의해 支配되어 있으며 한 가족이라 하기보다는 뿔뿔이 흩어진 각자대로의 生活이지만 만석이라고 하는 돈과 韓國人의 傳統的인 血肉의 情으로 하여 尹氏一家는 그 命脈을 이어가고 있는 것이다. 이와같이 「太平天下」는 歷史的·社會的 變動 속에서 한 家族의 起伏의 운명을 作家 特有의 諷刺的인 語法으로 제시하고 있는 것이다. 蔡 萬植, 그는 철저한 歷史意識을 갖고 있는 民族主義者로서 日帝治下의 現實을 消極的이 아니라 積極的으로 신랄하고 심각하게 側面에서 공격하고 있는 것이다. 여기서 日帝의 어려운 現實과 맞선 그의 諷刺文學은 그 價値가 더욱 再評價되어야 하리라 본다.;Chae Han-Sik's two novels, "Peaceful World" and "Turbid Stream" are the typical satirical works. Because, of the two novels, the "Peaceful World" was not yet approached in the critical point of view, the "Peaceful World" was chosen to delve into the affributes of chae Man-Sik's satirical literature. Chae Man-Sik, who elevated the level of 1930's modern literature to that of contemporary literature, made sure his literary foundation and widened the breaclth of the satirical literature by publishing "Peaceful World" on the literary magazine named "Cho-Kweng". "Peaceful World" is the novel whose influential satire is disclosed from the beginning by making the Main character Yoon Jik-Won to be misunderstood the darkest period as the peaceful era. Chae Han-Sik, who considered Literature as a power to push up human history, lost the circumstance to write 1930's reality directly. So, he put the circumstance of environment in the deep social structure and dark reality by condemning severely old Yoon Jik-Won, whose realitic judgement is almost idiotic. The thieves, burglars, socialists are regarded to be rascals by the pro-Japanese landowner Yoon Jik-Won, who thought the darkest period of Japanese occupation as the peaceful world. But Chae Man-Sik considered them as the characters of Dong-Hak Movement, farmers' revolution, Independence movement and national movement. And Yoon Jik-Won's grandson, Jong-Hak is put to prison, because he is a socialist against Japan. He is the contrastive character to Yoon Jik-Won. But not only Jong-Hak's concrete activity but also the personality himself is not expressed very much. In addition, he is treated as the worst rascal by Yoon Jik-Won. His animosity against Jong-Hak is expressed like this, "I wouldn't feel satisfied even though I killed him by cutting him off" Like this, novelist Chae Man-Sik showes the effect of the "Peaceful World" by paradoxical pasquinade, which denies what must be admitted and admits what must be denied. His other members of the family are quite different from him like this-His son, Chang-sik, whose hobby is to spend money. His son, Jong-Hak, whose socialism brings about the decay of Yoon's family. Such constitution of Yoon's family is dominated by the conflict of triangle. And his family barely keeps ifself in existence by its richness and feeling of traditional union. even though they live their own lives seperately. "Peaceful World" suggests the destiny of a family's ups and downs in the historical and social fluctuation. Chae Man-Sik, himself was a nationalist with thorough historical consciousness and be attacked the reality of colony very severely and sincerely. Therefore, the satirical literature of Chae Man-Sik who stood up against the hardships of Japanese occerpation in Korea, should be re-evaluated.
