憑虛의 貧窮小說 硏究

Abstract

After the Annexation of Korea to Japan in 1910, Japan Empoire gave Koreans a fatal persecution and a tyrannical opression, so that we Koreans at that time suffered a brokenhearted sorrow and had to live facing the starvation in the extreme poverty. It is no wonder that Koreans at the period produced the tragic literature, what is called 'Poverty Literature', dealing with the poverty problems. Both A Poor Wife and A Lucky Day have a base in the city life at that time; the one is describing the poor state of the intellectuals and the other, that of the labourers. And besides, another novel, The Home Village, is studying the state of the poverty-stricken farm village. These above three novels have a familiarity in exposing the then poverty problems, which made me take the subject of my thesis. A Poor Wife brought to Binghuh a great success, along with a recognition as a brilliant writer. From the outset, the image of a poor wife is well portrayed; in words which she spat out unconsciously after finding nothing left to sell for breakfast we come to realize the implication of the title, and predict the dark reality imposed by poverty. Binghuh gave a shape of poverty by contrasting rich and poverty in psychological side, geographical names, clothes, shoes and complexion, etc. Through a visage of a poor couple's life A Poor Wife shows us a real features of an intellectual who tries to overcome poverty and disaster, and finally finds truth. A Lucky Day is the best known of his works. From the beginning we come to be caught in the needy atmosphere which effectively implies the theme of the novel. The implication of the beginning part, the irony of the ending part and economic dialogue reach the summit of the technique at the last part of the novel. In A Lucky Day one poor labourer couple's life reveals the real phase of the contemporary society and the suffering of the lower-middle class. This novel can be regarded as a cross-sectional view of the pathetic life of the city labourer class. The Home village with the author's racial consciousness is represented as 'A Face Of Chosun' through the description of the miserable life under the colonized period. The delineation of appearance, clothes, feature, the ruining process of a farm village, the life of wanderers, and their wnadering journey, along with a melancholy reality of the depressed home village and the feature of a ruined woman is very demonstrative for the poverty problems of the period. Under the vicious colonial policy and inexorable exploitation our breathren had to endure hard persecutions, bitterly moaning, and keep the lowest standard of living. Farmers were the most miserable class inevitably faced with bankruptcy, as the result, with the poverty. This inevitable process of the impotent colonized race extremely well described in this novel reminds us of shattered vision of our native land of the period and awakens us to a falk spirit. The failure of an individual life and the barren home land, which mean the immediate social problems of the contemporary, are described realistically and demonstratively. It is not exaggerative, I think, if we call the novel a monument of the pathos of farmers and the tragedy of the colonized period. Conclusionally we can say 'Poverty Literature' gave a birth and grew on the base of the poor reality resulted from the Japanese economic aggression after the Annexation of Korea to Japan. 'Poverty Literature which takes its theme from poverty problems of human society can be pursuited in the works of Binghuh after the failure of March 1st Independence Movement, Binghuh who has an intention of edifying people is researching a series of connexed poverty problems with conspicuous objectivity and reality in a A Poor Wife, A Lucky Day and The Home Village. He related his consciousness of poverty with circumstances of the colonized period with psychiatristic diagnoses. His 'Poverty Novels' reflected a harsh reality of the colonized period by using the materials of the life of the poor class realistically. Binghuh's novels in 1920s can be regarded as a compressed picture of the contemporary features of poverty and its historical importance in the field of realism.;1910年 韓日合邦以後 日帝는 韓國 民族에게 致命的 打擊과 苛酷한 抑壓을 加하여 우리 民族은 極甚한 貧窮속에서 飢餓로 斷腸의 아픔을 겪었으며 그러한 狀況속에서 살아 왔기에 貧窮文學이 대두되었다. 貧窮文學은 貧困한 現實 生活을 題材로 하여 그것을 始終如一하게 追求해 나간 悲劇的인 文學인 것이다. 「貧妻」「운수 좋은 날」은 都會地를 舞台로 한 것이나 前者는 知識人의 貧窮한 生態를 後者는 勞動者의 貧窮한 生態를 描寫 했으며 「故鄕」은 農村의 貧窮한 生態를 對象으로 한 作品으로 보기 때문에 이 세 作品을 이 論文의 硏究對象으로 하게 되었다. 「貧妻」는 憑虛의 出世作이며 作家로 認定 받은 秀作이다. 序頭부터 貧窮象이 表現 되어 있어 가난한 아내는 아침거리를 장만하기 위하여 찾으려고 애쓰던 물건이 없음을 알고 無意識的으로 내뱉는 그 말에서 題目의 暗示性과 貧困이 가져 오는 어두운 現實을 豫見하게 된다. 憑虛는 季節 心理面 地名 衣服 신발 顔色 등에서 '富'와 '貧'을 대조시켜 貧窮을 形象化 하고 있다. 「貧妻」는 逆境과 貧窮에서 허덕이면서도 精神的으로나 人間的으로 眞實을 찾고자 애쓰는 한 知識人의 모습을 가난한 夫婦의 生活을 通해 보여 주었다. 「운수 놓은 날」은 가장 널리 알려진 作品으로서 이 作品은 序頭에서부터 全體的으로 貧窮한 雰圍氣는 勿論 그 主題에까지 提示하는 效果를 나타내고 있다. 序頭의 暗示性과 結末의 反語性 그리고 壓縮的인 對話로 이 作品의 結末部分에서는 特히 아이로니칼하게도 絶頂을 이루고 있다. 「운수 좋은 날」은 都市 勞動者 夫婦의 貧窮한 生活을 通하여 그 時代狀況과 下層民의 貧窮象을 鮮明하고 리얼하게 보여 주면서 下流 生活者가 겪는 苦痛을 素朴하게 客觀化 시켰다. 卽 都市 勞動者의 貧窮한 生活의 哀絶한 斷面圖라 할 수 있다. 「故鄕」은 植民地下의 暗澹한 삶의 모습을 民族意識을 가지고 '朝鮮의 얼굴'로 集約 시키고 있다. 이 作品에서는 外樣 衣服 얼굴묘사 農村의 沒落過程 流浪民의 生活相 流浪經路等 그러한 故鄕의 實狀과 파멸된 女人의 모습 등에서 貧窮을 露骨化 하고 있다. 「故鄕」은 奸惡한 植民地 政策下에 呻吟하던 우리 同胞 중에서도 最低의 生活을 維持했던 農民들이 沒落허여 貧窮化되는 過程을 잘 浮刻시켜 民族魂 일깨워주고 日帝의 收奪로 荒廢化 되고 貧窮化 된 우리 祖國의 모습을 보여 준다. 破滅된 個人의 삶과 不毛化된 故鄕이 露骨的이고 大膽하게 寫實的으로 表現된 作品이다. 卽 當代 現實의 社會問題를 執拗하게 파헤쳤고 農民의 悲哀, 植民地 時代 悲劇을 일깨운 記念碑的 作品이다. 韓國에 있어서 貧窮文學은 韓日合倂에 따른 日帝의 經濟侵略으로 빚어진 困窮한 現實에서 배태 成長 하였다. 貧窮 그 自體를 題材로 한 本格的인 貧窮文學은 亦是 3·1運動失敗後 憑虛에게서 찾아 볼 수 있다. 憑虛는 「貧妻」「운수 좋은 날」「故鄕」등에서 뚜렷한 目的意識을 가지고 主題가 一貫된 作品 속에다 當代의 貧窮한 現實을 客觀的으로 리얼하게 再現하였다. 貧窮에 對한 作家意識은 貧窮이 植民地 狀況과 結付된 病理的 現象으로 점철된다. 憑虛의 貧窮小說은 日帝 植民地라는 苛酷한 現實을 反映하고 貧窮한 題材를 選擇하여 批判하는 態度로 리얼하게 表現 하였다. 卽 憑虛는 貧窮小說은 20年代의 壓縮된 現實의 窮乏像과 그 歷史的 狀況을 리얼리티하게 表現한 集約的 狀況圖라 할 수 있다.
