Abstract

The peculiarities of dance art are to be found in the movements of human body. The movement of human body is a kind of human activities and takes a jajor part in the dance art. This movement is the primary element in dance. Dance art, of which the material is limited on human body, expands its own expressive power through the help of secondary elements - lights, music, costumes, stage setting and colour. These secondary elements help dance art to exceed its limitation. Alwin Nikolais who was the innovator in the 20th century American theatre combined the secondary elements with the motion of human body. He could create the balance and harmony between the motions of human body and the whole stage. This thesis is on the view on art of Alwin Nikolais with the study on the tendencies and individualities of his works. He could get particular stage-effect by transforming the non-physical elements into the moving physical material. Thus choreographer must not only produce the artistic movement of human body but also promote the effect of that movement by combining the secondary elements with works.;舞踊의 특성은 身體의 움직임에 있으며, 人間 행위의 한 形態이며, 종합예술로서의 舞踊 藝術에 절대적인 영향력을 行使하고 있다. 인간의 身體라는 제한된 素材를 가지고 있는 무용은 제1차적 要素인 움직임 외에도 照明, 色彩, 音樂, 衣裳, 舞台 裝置 등을 통해 表現力을 확대한다. 이 같은 제2차적인 요소들의 뒷받침으로 인해서 他分野와의 접촉 범위의 확대도 가능하다. 20C 미국 극장계의 革新主義者인 Alwin Nikolais는 제2차적 요소들을 身體에로 환원시킴으로써 舞台 空間속에서 무대와 신체 움직임 사이의 調和 均衡을 創出하려고 하였다. 本 論文에 있어서는 그의 生涯와 藝術觀을 통해서, 우주의 메카니즘(mechanism)과 더불어 인간의 實體를 주장한 그의 예술이론을 살펴보았다. 또한, 작품 特性과 傾向을 살펴봄으로써, 그외 外面性 指向의 舞踊 美學에 관한 고찰과 物理的 因子를 무대 공간 안에서 움직이는 媒體로 환원시켜 그가 얻어낸 무대 효과에 관한 고찰을 하였다. 이같은 硏究를 통해서, 按舞家는 舞踊의 움직임 연출에만 그칠 것이 아니라, 2차적 요소들을 接木시켜 舞台 空間속에서의 움직임이 效果를 증진시켜야 한다는 사실과 이에 대한 專門化가 필요하다는 結論에 도달했다.
