Abstract
It is a well-known fact that Korea suffered heavy losses due to the Hideyoshi's Invasion and the subsequent war of the year which continued from 1592 through 1598. The Manchu war of 1636 eventually resulted in the fall of the dynasty of the Yi Kings. The ravages of the protracted War and Japanese plunder of numerous cultural properties bitterly devasted the whole country of Korea. Ceramic culture was not exceptional and "Buncheong" once flurished during this period disappeared while pottery remained in existence alone. Japan inflicted severe destruction upon Korea also suffered heavy losses, but their pre-calculated plot to plunder Korean culture had a great effect on its migration to Japan. This can be fully justified by the fact that Japanese people called the Hidevoshi's Invasion of Korea in 1592 as "the ceramic war" or "the printing revolution." The transplantation of ceramic culture of Korea in Japan was a conspicuous phenomenon in the migration of Korean culture to Japan. The Japanese generals stationed in Korea Kidnapped a number of Korean potters in their stationing areas, especially Gyeongsangdo and Jeonlado provinces, to Japan. These captive potters's were treated with the utmost courtesy in order to have them introduce their advanced ceramic art in Japan. Though a war brings about the migration and intermix of culture, the war provoked by the Hideyoshi's Invasion of Korea was unparalled in history in that it accomplished successfully the transplantation of culture and civilization of other nation Most of the Japanese generals who invaded Korea were the feudal lods from the provinces of Kyushu of Japan and therefore the captive Korean petters's were mainly scattered in that ragion. This region is the very origin of the Japanese modern ceramic industry which marked the turning point in the ceramic history of Japan. Among the porcelain manufactured from the kilns which were operated by the Korean ceramists who settle down in the provinces of Kyushu, "Karatsu ware," "Takatori were," Satsuma ware," "Hagiware," "Agano ware," "Kouda ware," and "Arita ware" became famous. It is especially noticeable that the name of "Karatsu" had become a synonym for porcelain together with "Sedo" situated west of Japan proper. The "Satsuma ware" Was as highly valued as a typical porcelain of Japan in the West and the "Hagi ware" was numbered second, "pleasure" the first and "Karatsu" the third favorites among the circles of Japanese tea cult. Thus, most of the celebrated ceramics of Japan are of the Korean origin and the brilliant accomplishments of the Korean pottests left their mark in the ceramic history of Japan. The ceramic works of the Korean potters's who were naturalized as Japanese citizens were deservedly similar to those of Korea. It is important to note that there existed none of porcelain like pottery in Japan of those days. Pottery was manufactured. for the first time in Japan, by Korean potter's Lee Sam Pyeong and Korean stype kiln was introduced. There was available only hand potter's wheel as a forming device in theses days, but the Korean potters's introduced foot potter's wheel which had its reverberation in the ceramic world of Japan. The technique widely prevailed for the Korean style kiln was also "Buncheong" art or the "Mishima" type applied extensively in the early years of the Yi dynasty. This technique could be seen every place where the Korean potters settled down. The "Buncheong" once disappeared from Korea during the Hideyoshi's invasion was revived in Japan by the potters from the southern Korean origin. This kind of "Buncheong" was accepted simply as "Mishima replica" and not highly valued by Japanese people for the reason that it was not manufactured in Korea. However, it can be fully seen from the Japanese "Buncheong" works investigated that the technique applied to them was transmitted entirely from Korea and transformed in Japan. Even though they may not be directly connected to the "Buncheong" chronicle of the Yi dynasty, they are considered to provide suggestive data of their historical background. As discussed above, the Japanese "Buncheong" succeeded to that of the Yi dynasty and therefore there is no difference in particular in technique and production aspect. However, there are some Japanized works, such as "Surie," "Kushime" and a variety of "Hageme," which were newly developed by Japanese themselves. The transplantation of ceramic art of the Yi dynasty in Japan can be substantially reaffirmed through the present comparative study.;壬辰·丁酉亂(1592-1598)이 朝鮮으로 하여금 무참하리 만큼 큰 타격을 받고 그 後의 丙子胡亂과 함께 李氏王朝를 돌이킬 수 없는 衰亡의 길을 걷게 한 元兇임은 누구나 아는 사실이다.
