The present study was intended to investigate the effect of task similarity on learned helplessness for children. In addition, the effect of the relative importance of training task on acquisition of learned helplessness. It was predicted that (1) the greater similar between training and test tasks, the generality of learned helplessness there would be. (2) Learned helplessness would occur only under important task but not unimportant one. A two-phase study was carried out, consisting of a training phase and test phase. Subjects for this study were 48 famale and 48 male fifth grade elementar school students. As the traing task which was described as either anintlligent test (high importance condition) or figure quiz (low importance condition) during the training phase, subjects were exposed to 1) noncontingent failure, in which each subjects was given response-noncontingent feedback and 10 noncontingent failure of 12 problems; 2) Contingent, in which each subject was presented response-contingent feedback and contingent successes-failures; 3) Control, for which each subject was instructed to tell the differences of two figures on each card. Following this task, subjects was assessed their performance either on Bruner's Concept formation task (similarity condition) or Block Design Task (dissmilarity condition). The Results of the present study were as follows. 1. Performance deficits occurred only under the similar task condition. 2. Performance deficits had nothing to do with instruction of task importance. The main finding of the present study was that elementary school children manifested learned helplessness under similar task condition.-
