중첩과 반복에 의한 섬유 설치

Abstract

조형예술의 활동이란 조형 제작 활동의 주체가 되는 인간이 예술표현의 의지를 가지고 그 의지를 형태로서 시각화하는데 있어 다양한 재료와 표현기법으로 조형화하는 활동이다. 현대미술은 사회가 변화하고 발전해 감에 따라 과거의 고정화 된 개념에서 과감히 탈피하여 좀더 적극적인 예술 활동을 전개해 나아가는 것을 볼 수 있다. 새로운 조형적 표현으로 등장한 '설치'의 개념은 작품의 가치 전달과 효과적인 표현을 위한 하나의 수단이자 일종의 방법상의 유형으로 공간에서 의 다양한 변화와 효과를 창출하며 전시공간 자체에서 그 의미를 만들어 제시한다. 현대설치미술은 다양한 장르의 복합적이고 혼성적인 성격을 가지고 발전되고 있으며, 현대 섬유 역시 다원화 된 사회에 대한 공존으로서 주변의 다른 영역과 다양한 요소들이 겹쳐져 표현되고 있다. 현대섬유미술은 '설치'의 적극적 활용으로 '직물환경'의 개념으로 그 영역을 확장시켜 왔는데 공간 개념이 그 중심에 있다. 이러한 공간 개념을 기본으로 형태를 구성하는 설치방법으로서의 중첩과 반복은 고정된 시각개념에서 벗어나 변화를 창출해낼 수 있는 요소이다. 본 연구의 목적은 위에 언급한 바와 같이 설치미술의 다원적 특성을 기반으로, 작품 표현에 있어서 중첩과 반복의 구성방법을 통한 섬유설치의 조형성을 연구하는 데 있다. 이론적 배경으로는 첫째, 중첩과 반복의 개념과 함께 그 특성을 살펴 보고, 이 개념들이 어떤 미술사적 흐름을 가지고 있는지 고찰하였다. 또한 미술사적 전개 속에서 중첩과 반복이 어떠한 모습으로 표현되었는지 알아보고, 이것들을 방법으로 표현한 국내외 작가들의 작품을 비교, 분석하였다. 둘째, 설치의 개념을 살펴보고, 섬유 미술사적 고찰을 통해 설치가 어떻게 전개되어 왔는지 고찰하였다. 더불어 섬유미술 안에서 표현된 국내외 작가들의 설치작품을 유형에 따라 구분하여 비교, 분석하였다. 작품 제작에 있어서는 금사, 합성사, 나일론사, 모노 필라멘트사, PVC 필름 등을 소재로 성글고 투명하게 제직하였고, 직기를 이용한 기본 평직과 비제직의 조화로 짜여진 작업을 아크릴을 이용해 형태를 형성하였다. 중첩과 반복에 의한 조형적 특성인 공간감과 그로 인한 투명성 그리고 연속성을 강조한 동일한 단위형태의 피스(piece)들을 반복적으로 구성, 설치함으로써 공간의 확장을 유도하였다. 본 연구에서는 현대미술에서 새롭고 확대된 조형영역을 구축하고 있는 설치미술에 대해 알아보고, 중첩과 반복에 의한 다양한 조형 표현을 통해 시·공간의 정지된 개념의 예술에서 벗어나 시간과 공간의 연속성에 의해 제한되지 않고 끊임없이 확장되는 미술로서의 설치개념에 대해 새롭게 고찰해 보고자 한다. ;An Activity of Arts and Craft means human being, which is a subject of moulding process, having the intention to express the art, objectifying intention into visual form utilizing various kinds of materials making use of many kinds of expressing techniques. Modern art is unfolding more progressive activity different from the fixed form of the past as the society changes and advances. Lately presented 'installation', a new formative expression, is one of means to deliver the concept and to efficiently express it and is a form of methodological type. This type of expansion forms the meaning in the exhibition space itself which is created by offering unique experience and plotting diversified visual change. Modern Installation has been developed as a complex and general character being used along with other field and various elements affected by diversified society and lately is playing a important role in the modern art as a Total Art which implies the up-to-date art by using various mediation and unifying different types of style. The purpose of my study, as stated above, is to conducting research on formative aspect of 'Inatallation', by reiteration and repetition on expressing the work based on the Inatallation's pluralistic character. As a theoretical background, Installation's concept and developing process and also characteristics of the Iastallation from art historical point of view was reviewed. The concept and peculiarity of repetition and overlap and how they were develop in the history of art were also studied. Finally tried to figure out how repetition and overlap were used in the work of art and comparatively analyzed those works of art. Producing the work, golden thread, synthetic thread, nylon thread, monofilaments, PVC film were sparsely and transparently weaved using both 'basic plain weaving‘ and 'nonweaving'. The form was settled by the acryl panel. Expansion of the space were intended to be shown by space sense and transparency which are the characteristics of repetition and overlap, and by repetition of identified forms of pieces. In conclusion, This study is to learn more about the Installation which is building up a fresh and expanded territory of the modern art, and more specificly, to express the formative characteristics of the Installation formed by overlap and repetition. Five works produced following this procedure lead us to following conclusion. First, reiteration and repetition, a simple unit, gives unity visually forming a monotonous impression, at the same time, however, give a sense that the image will continuously expanded and therefore gives a feeling that the space will be expanded in accordance. Second, a three dimensional body's overlap and repetition in a space with identical interval shows the connection of the space, shrinking the actual distance and at the same time making our sight to look beyond the real space emphasizing the expression. Third, sparsely and transparently weaved materials strengthened the perceived transparency, and the space sense created by the transparency helped to express the depth in terms of the form. Giving limitation on the color of the materials using golden thread and transparent ones, protected our sight from being dispersed and helped continuous rhythmic sense powered by overlap and repetition. Fourth, a progressive way using acryl, escaping from the form of plane and relief, has brought shadow into the work reinforcing the overlap effect, and were able to emphasize the cubic feeling effectively. Also because of the easiness to assemble, various was of assembly was possible. Transparent acryl was used for forming material for each units, in order to assemble the cubic form made by light's transmission regardless of the disturbance of the sight. Fifth, the atmosphere and the understanding of the spectator differs according to the way to arrange the works and the point of view. Through this study, I've found out that Installation's endless potential to grow because of its inclusive characteristics. The spacious effect by repetition and overlap, the formative character of the posting in the real space were also things I learned.
