;Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a composer who was active during the peak of Romanticism in the 19th century. He combined the diverse colors and emotions of the Romantic music with the traditional formal aesthetics of the Classical music only to establish his own world of music. The purpose of this study is to review the Romantic Classical musician's characteristics of music through his piano works, and thereupon, analyze his later model piano work 「Klavierstu"cke Op.118」in order to understand the general characteristics of his music and particularly, those of his later works, and thereby, help pianists better play this piece as well as his other works. In reference to Beethoven' and Schumann's modes, Brahms used faithful sound, broken chord sound forms, overlapping of melody lines with 3rd or 6th chord, and cross rhythm technically, and also applied sonata form and thematic variation primarily. Thus, his music seems to be characterized by rich harmony and mild emotion, although his syntax was based on the Classical music. Since Brahms did not sympathize with the general Romantic trend called abstract music, he used the simple general themes for his short piano pieces, avoiding the descriptive expressions used by Schumann and Liszt. Likewise,「Klavierstu"cke Op.118」which consists of 4 intermezzos, one ballade and one romanze, totalling 6 short pieces, uses a general theme with each piece having no meaningful theme. All 6 pieces have a 3-part form (ABA), but show various sub-parts such as transition, codetta and coda. Melodies tend to be overlapped with 3rd or 6th chord, and in particular, the 5th piece with its theme derived from introspection uses ostinato bass. A broken chord sound form using arpeggio is conspicuous in 1st and 6th pieces. In terms of rhythm, syncopation using accent, 2:3 dor 3:2 hemiola, polyrhythm are used frequently in 2nd and 4th pieces. In particular, the 4th piece shows a counterpoint technique much by means of stretto and canon, while the 5th piece reveals thematic variation much favored by the composer. As for the harmony, such tones as passing, auxiliary and nonharmonic ones are used much, while harmonies are deployed densely and richly. The 1st and 3rd pieces use Picardy third cadence, and the 1st and 4th pieces use decreasing 7th chord. As discussed above, Brahms'「Klavierstu"cke Op.118」expresses his musical characteristics well which developed the Romantic music semantic within the framework of Classical music, while implying his cheerless and lonely life being aged as well as his unique mature music and inner beauty.-
