Abstract
This thesis is intended to promote accurate knowledge about the original text of Shu-Yi-ji(述異記), a Zhi-Guai(志怪) novel that can be classified into the Record of Geography and Knowledge(地理博物志類) edited by Ren-Fang(任昉) during the Liang Dynasty. For that purpose, this thesis made a complete translation of the main 311 articles and conducted a comprehensive review about the contents and forms of the novel. Hence, the first part of the thesis dealt with the poetics of Shu-Yi-ji(述異記) while the second part of the thesis focused on the translation and annotation of its full text. The first chapter of the first part (of the thesis) made clear that the thesis attempted to give a full translation of the text to examine general contents and forms of Shu-Yi-ji(述異記) with the purpose of promoting further studies on the novel. The first paragraph of the second chapter discussed the controversies over who was the original writer of Shu-Yi-ji(述異記) and when it was first completed: some argued that Ren-Fang wrote and edited Shu-Yi-ji(述異記) during the Liang Dynasty while others did not agree. After balancing out various opinions from the both sides, its final conclusion was to support Li-Jian-Guo(李劍國)'s argument that the original text had been written by Ren-Fang(任昉) even though it might have been edited or corrected by future generations. The second paragraph compared different editions of Shu-Yi-ji(述異記) to find out similar or differential features between various editions and decided that the Bai-Hai-Ben(稗海本) was the best edition of Shu-Yi-ji(述異記). The third paragraph charted the origins of various stories of Shu-Yi-ji(述異記), finding out that the most stories had already appeared in other books before Shu-Yi-ji(述異記). The third chapter reviewed the forms of Shu-Yi-ji(述異記). The first paragraph analyzed the structure of the text to make such conclusions that the novel has its own unique structure, not a 'hybrid(冗雜)' structure as commented by Si-Kao-Quan-Shu-Zong-Mu-Ti-Yao(四庫全書總目提要). The second paragraph reviewed various narrative techniques of the novel: a chronologically-ordered narrative(史傳的 敍事) that adopted historical and biological narration, a parodical narrative that added new meanings into the already-mentioned contents to create a new structure and a space-centered narrative in which events occur according to different space not according to different time line. The fourth chapter classified each story material that appeared in Shu-Yi-ji(述異記) into the following four categories: 1) anecdotes about gods and people, 2) descriptions about animals, plants and objects, 3) descriptions about geographies and weather phenomena, and 4) the rest items that do not belong to the above three categories. In conclusion, Shu-Yi-ji(述異記) is very similar to other Zhi-Guai(志怪) novels of the Record of Geography and knowledge(地理博物志類) in that its most part consists of strange animals, plants, objects and geographies. At the same time, however, the former could be differentiated from the latter in that Shu-Yi-ji(述異記) discusses a great deal about mythological existences in its first half and many stories are based on a specific weather phenomenon described as '~(something) poured as rain'. Based on the above analysis, the fifth chapter reviewed three major world views that appeared in the novel : Harmony between Heaven and Human(天人感應說),Oi-Hua-Yu-Zhou-Lun(氣化宇宙論) and Shen-Xian-Si-Xiang (神仙思想). The first paragraph found out that a frequent appearance of stories about prophecies or omens were based on Harmony between Heaven and Human(天人感應說) whose thought believed that the nature and the human world have a mutual influence on each other. The second paragraph analyzed that stories about metamorphosis were based on the traditional perspective of Oi-Hua-Yu-Zhou-Lun(氣化宇宙論)where everything could be considered a flow of Qi moving constantly. The third paragraph reviewed that Shen-Xian-Si-Xiang(神仙思想) played an important role as a source of imagination for Shu-Yi-ji(述異記), having a great influence on its narrative structure, story materials and motifs. The second part of the thesis is aimed at having a complete translation of the whole text of Shu-Yi-ji(述異記), presenting basic principles of its translation and annotations for the 311 articles of the Shu-Yi-ji(述異記) text. The Bai-Hai(稗海) Shu-Yi-ji(述異記) proofread by Shang-Jun(商濬) during the Ming Dynasty was adopted as a basic text and Nakajima Osahumi(中島長文)'s "On the Moulding of Ren Fang(任昉)'s Shu-yi-ji(述異記)" issued in Journal of Oriental Studies (東方學報) was used as a reference book. Other reference books were Si-Kao-Quan-Shu(四庫全書) edited by Ji-Yun(기윤), Han-Wei-Cong-Shu(漢魏叢書) edited by Cheng-Rong (程榮) and Tai-Ping-Guang-Ji(太平廣記) and Tai-Ping-Yu-Lan (太平御覽) both edited by Li-Fang(李昉).
