;The Buddhism of Koryeo(高麗) is characterized as 'national Buddhism', and one of the conditions of becoming national Buddhism is the practice of national Buddhist ceremonies as a religious act. In fact, there were 83 kinds and 1,083 times of Buddhist ceremonies chiefly by certain deities and Sutras in the Koryeo era. BulJeongDoryang(佛頂道場), among others, is a ceremony related to JonSeungBulJeong(尊勝佛頂), which had been held 37 times, in all, for about 200 years from King Seonjong(宣宗) to King Wonjong(元宗). BulJeongDoryang can be said to be a representative of the faith in BulJeong that had been handed down from the Shilla(新羅) period. The belief in BulJeong of Shilla centered around JonSeungBulJeong and its principal Sutra, BulJeongJonSeungDaraniGyeong(佛頂尊勝陀羅尼經). This belief can be traced back to Hyetong(惠通), who, however, is not presumed to be the one to have brought in the Sutra. Rather, Hyeil(惠日) is most likely to have introduced this Sutra. He was Bulgong's pupil and had an indirect experience of BulJeongJonSeungDaraniGyeong for the sake of the national defense. Therein, he can be regarded as having laid the foundations for the link between BulJeongJonSeungDaraniGyeong and its use of national defense. This sutra was also widely believed in China in that it was flourishing as a stone pole in Dang(唐), Song(宋), and Yo(遼). This religious trend of China seems to have been passed on to Koryeo along with an inflow of the Buddhist Sutras and the Confucian classics by envoys. In addition, the copying of that sutra in Balhae(渤海) was rampant, which again shows that the faith in this sutra had been flowed into Koryeo, when mirroring the fact that Koryeo followed the tradition of Balhae's Buddhism. BulJeongDoryang was held according to BulJeongJonSeungDaraniGyeong. JonSeungBulJeong was believed comparatively more than the many other kinds of BulJeongJons(佛頂尊). This is epitomized in the Koryeo collection of Buddhist Sutras where only two or three volumes were alloted to the other BulJeongs while JonSeungBulJeong was shown in eight volumes. BulJeongDoryang was carried out during the times of King Injong(仁宗) and King Myeongjong(明宗), which accounted for eight times altogether. The gravity of BulJeongDoryang out of the whole ceremonies is the greatest during the reign of King Injong, if compared with the other regimes. However, it is during the period of King Myongjong's reign that BulJeongDoryang was considered more significant if the number of ceremonies held is compared to one another, except for that of the regular Buddhist ceremonies like YeonDeungHoi(燃燈會) and PalgwanHoi(八關會). This Doryang was held in every month but June, and October had the most of it. BulJeongDoryang was held in order to pray for rain, resolve the foreign affairs, and suppress rebellion. Looking into the records of this ceremony, it is the most salient that the ceremony was held first in the second year of King Seonjong's reign and was never held after the tenth year of King Wonjong's reign, not the whole period of Koryeo. The fact that this ceremony was held first in the times of King Seonjong seems to have some bearings on many times of inflow of the Buddhist Sutras and acceptance of the Buddhism of Song, Yo, and Balhae in the reign of King Munjong(文宗). On the other hand, the fact that the ceremony was not performed after the times of King Wonjong is presumed to be because of Won(元)'s putting a restraint on Koryeo's Doryang for the purpose of national defense. The patron of this ceremony was the king himself, and BulJeongDoryang, in turn, was practiced in part to support the royal authority. Besides, BulJeongDoryang shares the characteristics of Koryeo's Buddhist rituals in that it utilized the Sutras for the sake of the present world rather than reproducing the teachings of the Sutras in a faithful way. BulJeongJonSeungDaraniGyeong, itself, mentions the very personal pious acts, but it expands its scope of deeds to the national interests due to the four-kind Homa in BulJeongJonSeungDaraniYeomSongEuiGweBeob(佛頂尊勝陀羅尼念誦儀軌法). Examining the functions of the other frequently held Buddhist rites in the era of Koryeo, we can learn that they are not that distinct from that of BulJeongDoryang's performance. The reason for holding BulJeongDoryang repetitively, despite this fact, should be sought in BulJeongJonSeungDaraniGyeong, itself. BulJeongJonSeungDaraniGyeong removes the obstacles of sins leading to the inferno, and preaches the deeds of longevity and cure. To put it another way, it attempts to settle the nation's disease and difficulty, i.e., weather disasters or wars, by extending the virtues of BulJeongJonSeungDaraniGyeong. By dint of this, taking life is performed in a war although it was prohibited in the doctrines. According to this sutra, no matter what acts one did during the war time, he destroys the hell and tries to obtain the virtues of longevity and cure by this sutra. Lastly, BulJeongDoryang seems to have been superintended by Chongjjong(摠持宗), among other sects existing in the period of Koryeo. Chongjijong is the sect founded by Hyetong, which seems to have developed its faith in accordance with BulJeongJonSeungDaraniGyeong. Moreover, BulJeongSoJaeDoryang, held in Chongjisa(摠持寺) in the sixteenth year of King Myongjong's reign, backed up this fact mentioned above. In other words, Chongjisa was exceptionally in charge of this event because 'BulJeong' was contained in its name.-
