학위복의 상징성을 통해 본 복식의 사회적 의미

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 복식을 통한 상징, 그 가운데서도 학위복을 통해 상징되는 것이 무엇인가에 관한 것과, 그러한 상징의 문제가 복식자체에 국한된 문제가 아니라 여러 사회적 상호작용의 반영이라는 것을 고찰해보고자 하는 것이다. 학위복을 통해 상징되는 것을 크게 두가지로 나눠보면 첫째는 개념적 차원의 것으로 학문과 대학이 추구하는 가치, 권위의 표상으로서의 상징과, 다른 하나는 각 학위의 등급과 전공에 따른 구분이라는 구체적인 정보면에서의 상징적 역할이다. 이와같은 논의를 위해 학위복의 기원에 관해 살펴보고, 12-13세기 중세유럽대학의 발생과 더불어 착용되기 시작한 학위복이 미국과 우리나라에서는 어떻게 도입·착용되었는지에 대해 살펴보았다. 또한 학위복이 갖는 사회적 가치와 상징을 논함에 있어 의례복으로서의 측면과 제복으로서의 학위복에 관해 살펴보았다. 이로써 복식이 개인적 차원의 선택·취향에 국한된 문제가 아니라 개인 및 집단의 정체성을 표현하고 인지하는 의사소통적 매체라는 것을 확인하고자 하였으며, 이를 위한 연구 방법으로는 복식의 사회적 의미와 작용에 관한 선행연구자료, 학위복의 기원 및 역사에 관한 문헌조사와 학위복을 착용하는 대학의 사진조사를 중심으로 진행하였다. 학위복은 중세 유럽 대학의 발생시기(12-13세기)부터 착용된 학자들의 제복이었으며, 성직자 복에 그 기원을 두고 있다. 유럽의 학위복 전통에 영향을 받은 미국의 경우, 1893년 학위복에 관한 대학연합의 규정을 마련한 것을 시작으로 이후 여러차례 이 규정에 대한 검토와 수정을 거쳤으며, 현재 사용되고 있는 규정은 1959년 미국교육평의회에서 임명된 학위복 및 학위식 심의회에서 제정한 규정을 따르고 있다. 이 규정의 구체적 내용들은 우리나라를 비롯하여 학위복을 착용하는 많은 국가에 모델이 되고 있다. 우리나라는 1908년 제중원 의학교 졸업식에서의 학위복 착용을 시작으로 대학의 학위수여식때 학위복을 착용하는 것이 관례화 되었고, 대학별로 세부적인 형태면에서의 차이가 약간씩 있기는 하나 일반적으로 가운, 후드, 캡 형식의 미국식 학위복의 형태를 따르고 있다. 학위복의 예를 통해서 알 수 있듯이 복식을 통한 상징의 문제는 다양한 사회적 관계와 인식에 관한 문제이며, 문화의 다양성과 개인화가 증대될수록 복식의 상징 체계에 대한 다면적인 접근이 요구된다. ;The purpose of this study is to analyze the social meaning of the costume on symbolism of the academic costume. We can think on the premise that the costume has influence on identity of the personal and group. Academic costume is not only special ceremonial costume but also a kind of uniform of the university. Ceremonial costume and uniform are strongly effective symbol characteristic. The origins of academic costume date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when universities were taking form in Europe. The ordinary costume of the scholar, whether student or teacher, was the costume of a cleric. Externally, they take differnt forms according to shapes and hood colors differentiating areas of specialty. Though most universities of the United State, with a few unusual exceptions, wore the academic costume under the influence of Europe. In 1932 the American Council on Education authorized the appointment of a committee to determine whether revision and completion of the academic code adopted by the conference of the universities. Most of the Korean universities have followed academic costume code of U.S. Academic costume symbolize the traditional and the identity of the university and the end of one's academic endeavor and one's intellectual achievement. Wearing the uniform means that it recognizes with the member of organization. Uniform represent a symbolic image of the group in consideration and is intended to affect wearers' consciousness. Especially, academic costume is regarded as ceremonial and symbolic garment worn by graduates participating in a commencement. This study extract symbolism of an academic costume by examining its concept, history, and social implications. And based on these results, we can recognize clothing sybolism.
