This M.A. thesis project translates the white paper titled The Human Rights of Migrant Workers in Korea, published by the Joint Committee of Migrant Workers (JCMK) in December 2001, from Korean into the English language. In the beginning section of this technical translation, changes of polices on migrant workers are analyzed. Then the migrant laborers’ working and living conditions are described and supported with current case studies. Appendices detail the changes in migrant worker-related regulations, list the bills submitted to the National Assembly, and make recommendations for further changes. The translation also contains the history of the JCMK and its logbook. In addition to the translation work, the white paper’s contents were expanded to include examples of the latest cases of migrant workers’ abused rights, changes in policies affecting migrant workers, and changes in the working conditions of these workers. In essence, this makes the M.A. thesis project an updated edition of the original white paper published in 2001. A theoretical paper prefaces the technical translation of the white paper, and it examines several principles of translation and technical writing. The theoretical paper examines the reasons why the white paper was reorganized to achieve greater coherence and consistency, and the methods employed to achieve these modifications. The theoretical paper concludes by presenting several examples that detail how these principles were applied to the translating and updating of the original white paper.
