Abstract
It is probably man's instinct to drink, talk and enjoy with close friends. And recording a gathering in writing or in painting has a long history of its own. During the Joseon period(朝鮮, 1392-1910), scholars and officials held a variety of assemblies, and left records of the event. And from the late 17th century, record paintings in various styles and contents came to be produced; particularly those depicting the free and private events of the scholar officials. Such paintings shall hereafter be called 'ahoi-do'(雅會圖) paintings or 'elegant assembly' paintings. In other words, 'ahoi-do' painting records the private, sometimes spontaneous, meeting of the literati class. 'Ahoi'(or elegant assembly, 雅會) was an unofficial gathering of scholars who focused on poetic refinement, different from the grand official assemblies that were formulaic and commemorative. Thus, the 'ahoi' was of spontaneous and elegant characteristic that embraced the conversations, poetry compositions, musical performances, board games, painting and calligraphy, tea brewing, and wine drinking activities of the assembly. Other gatherings called in different terms but conforming to the characteristics of 'ahoi' are also examined as a part of the 'ahoi' in this thesis. The term 'a(雅)' in 'ahoi' means 'simple, restrained, elegant, and refined', and thus, the term soon became involved with the elegant literati gatherings. By enjoying refined tastes and elegant assemblies, the literati pursued the realization of 'a' (of 'ahoi') and the means of this pursuit included musical performance, traditional game of 'baduk', painting, and calligraphy(琴棋書畵). In order to follow the lifestyles of the lofty scholars, the literati copied the activities of ancient figures, and incorporated them into their own assemblies. The origin of late Joseon 'ahoi'(or elegant assembly) can be found in a number of assembly paintings that dealt with the ancient events. The literati viewed these ancient figures, not as Chinese, but as 'sages' and 'ancient nobles'. 'Ahoi' can be classified into a variety of gatherings such as spontaneous assembly, commemorative assembly, regular gatherings, and invitation assemblies. Many of the late Joseon 'ahoi' comprised of spontaneous gatherings and commemorative assemblies. In spontaneous gatherings, one of the participants painted the event, while in other gatherings, a professional painter was commissioned to depict the assembly. Among the special commemorative assemblies, many birthdays and farewell parties were held at homes, while special occasions and regular meetings were held open air, in pavilions. 'Ahoi-do' paintings, literally 'elegant assembly paintings' changed according to the socio-cultural circumstances; particularly in form, style, content, and meaning. The newly risen scholar class, absorbing the literati culture of Ming(明, 1368-1644)China and succeeding the mid Joseon(1550-1700) tradition, spent time admiring nature in open air. Thus, 'ahoi' was a conventional activity in the late Joseon period, but those who left a pictorial depiction of the event was limited. The most representative families who left 'ahoi-do' paintings were the Andong Kim clan (安東 金氏), Kang Sehwang (姜世晃, 1713- 1791) and the Jinju Yu clan(晉州 柳氏) in Ansan, and Seong Daejung(成大中, 1732-1812) and his colleagues who travelled to Japan as envoys. During the 18th century, spontaneous 'ahoi' and invitation 'ahoi' assemblies increased. Thus, many paintings of the 'ahoi' were executed by one of the participants. The cultural exchange among the literati class soon spread to the 'jungin'(中人, or middle people)class. Private gatherings were formed in Samcheong-dong, Okryu-dong nearby Inwang-san mountain, and the Nam-san area, and commemorative 'ahoi' assembly albums were produced. These albums carried the personal information of the participants, introductory remarks, assembly code, poetry composed by the participants, essays, and paintings recording the event executed by professional painters. The newly risen class pursuing literati tastes particularly focused their meetings on special occasions and on regular assemblies. And in these events, a professional painter was invited to produced an 'ahoi-do' painting. It was in the second half of the 18th century that 'ahoi-do' paintings were actively produced. From the late 18th century, 'ahoi' gatherings were actively held by the literati and the newly risen class pursuing literati tastes. It appears that the literati activity of 'ahoi' quickly found itself absorbed by this new class of people who held such gatherings on invitation or on special occasions. And these assemblies were recorded by professional painters. On spontaneous assemblies, a participant was asked to paint the event, but on special occasions, a professional painter was invited. Kim Hongdo(金弘道, 1745-1806 after) was perhaps one of the most prolific painters of 'ahoi-do' painting. Kim not only participated in the assemblies held by the literati, but also partook in the gatherings of the newly risen class pursuing literati taste. He brought the icons of historic figures, and realized them on the painting, rendering a harmony of the past and the present. Thus, he adopted typical figures of the past, and incorporated them into the present background, producing a refined and elegant atmosphere. In the 19th century, assemblies were mostly held by the newly risen class pursuing literati tastes, and thus, many 'ahoi-do' paintings depicted their gatherings. The 'ahoi-do' paintings became repetitive and stylistic in the 19th century; historic figures set in the Southern School style background. The painters of such assemblies were mostly Kim Jeonghee(金正熙, 1786- 1856) and his disciples, or other literati. On the other hand, Yu Suk(劉淑, 1827-1873) attended the 'Byeoko-sa'(碧梧社) gathering, and left many 'ahoi-do' paintings. Yu Suk painted some with meticulous brushwork, carefully depicting the details according to the occasion, while he painted others with simple brushwork. Late Joseon 'ahoi-do' paintings developed distinctive posture, vision, and composition. However, when depicting special occasions such as birthdays, particularly birthdays of the elderly, the figures were placed in a circular composition. When figures were depicted in free form, one central figure stood out, full faced and leaning on one side. From such posture, the figure is presumed to be the leader, the host, or the eldest of the assembly. In 'ahoi' assemblies held in the scholar's studio, the four friends of the scholar, the table, the 'baduk' game board, the musical instrument, the vase, and other everyday objects and decorations were described in the painting. However, assemblies held in pavilions and in gazebos simply displayed brush, paper, and ink set, and a small table with refreshments. In meetings commemorating special events, the paintings presented beautiful and elegant objects around the figures, with almost no regard to the setting. The brushwork employed in 'ahoi-do' paintings of figures in small landscape was composed of consistently thin lines used in portraits and in paintings of ancient figures. However, the brushwork of 'ahoi-do' paintings of extremely small figures in landscape presented short strokes found in Ming Chinese painting albums of figures. The 'ahoi-do' painting painters adopted light color, light ink, and light brush stroke, and rendered and elegant atmosphere full of calm and intellectual spirit, clearly differing from other figure paintings in style. 'Ahoi' assembly was a cultural by-product of the literati class. Thus the literati taste, artistic preference, and leisure activity changed according to the atmosphere of the 'ahoi' gathering. The idyllic man sought after by the literati scholars in these assemblies, was a lofty, composed figure who knew how to enjoy elegant and refined activities. The literati who pursued such noble-mindedness and purity desired to form moral and harmonious relationship with others. And such relationships, they believed, could be perfected through 'elegant and non-secular' activities and enjoyments. Thus, 'ahoi-do' paintings presented pictorial creations of the literati who strived to realize the idyllic lifestyle of the virtuous man and the unworldly hermit.;친한 벗과 모여서 술잔을 주고 받고, 담소를 나누며, 같은 취미를 즐기려는 행동은 타고 난 인간의 본성일 것이다.
