Abstract
1. Problems The impact of TV on society, and particularly on its younger mcmbor, is a matter of public importance on which maney people hold strong views. The alleged effects and the alleged extent of the influence of TV in particular have been an important topic for public debation. Assertions and denials are frequent. Mass ocms particularly TV is alternately blamed for increased crime, voilence, immorality and escapism, and praised for its educational achievement and social usefulness. Unfortunately the debategoos on without nothing to an agreement, for the debate on the effects of TV is seriously handicaped by the lack of conclusive evidence and data. So the basic purpose of this study is to explore the problem of the effects of TV viewing on children. The specific problems investigated in this study are as follows; 1) Are there any relationships between the intelligence, Age, and sex and the trend of TV viewing? 2) Does the parent socio-economics status influence the children's TV viewing? 3) Are there any relationships between family enivronment or child rearing and TV viewing? 4) Does the parent's TV viewing influence the children, TV viewing? 5) The effects of TV viewing on children. a) The structure of their daily living (specially leisure time) b) cognitive effects c) emotional effects d) value or attitude e) personality 2. Instrument and sampling In order to explore the effects of TV, this study has used the questionarie, inteview, and the standardized tests such as creative, value, and personality tests. The questionarie constructed to be two parts, one for children's and the other for parent's consisted of 96 items and one for the paront's consisted of 41 items. The subjects employed in this study are two groups. One group is TV group consisted of 160 boys and 140 girls of the third and fifth grades in public elementary school and of 2nd grade in junior and senior school in Seoul. The parents of the children selected for this study were subjected to the questionarie. And 190 boys and girls and their parents were employed for interviewing. The other group is Non- TV group, consisted of 30 delequenty boys and girls wore selected from the Juvenile prison in Seoul, for the comparison with the normal group of children. 3. Results The results found by this study are as follows; 1. There are great individual differeneces among children in their TV viewing. The higher intelligence group(IQ,over 125) are heavy viewer than the lower group. And the higher group tends to them away from TV to the supposedly earlier than the lower group, and also the older the ages, the less views TV. The younger is both group, girls and boys liked cartoon, But the alder boys tend to like western and sports game, and the alder girls tend to like Home dramas. No differences were found between the two groups classified in terms of the socio-economics status, family's socialy chological climate, and the patterns of child roarting. The structure of daily living has been roorganized because of their TV viewing, particularly in the time schedules of refiring to the bed and of studying. TV viewing has not given any influence on their school achievement. And there was no difference in their creativity between the two groups, the heavy viewer and the light viewer. In emotional effects, the violent or thrilling drama has made the girls have fear fooling. No differences were found in their values and attitude, except in the human relation. While the non-TV group places emphasison the subordinato relationships, the TV group tends to hold the value of individual. The TV viewing does not give any effects in their occupational choices. But differences were found between the boys and the girls. While the elementary boys want to be the president or statesman, and the girls want to be musicians. While the junior and sinior high school boys want to be a doctor or engneer, the girls want to be fashion designers or nurses. All of the subjects, boys or girls, have answered they liked move the bravest and righteous men than the industrial and modest men appeared in TV drama.
