영화를 활용한 국사 수업의 가능성 탐구

Abstract

역사에 대한 학생들의 관심과 흥미를 높이기 위한 여러 방안들이 모색되는 가운데 특히 주목받고 있는 것이 영화이다. 현재 역사학계에서는 영화를 역사 연구의 소재로 삼는 차원에서 더 나아가 영화를 역사와 접목하여 하나의 역사학 분야로 받아들이고 있다. 그러나 실제 중·고등학교 역사 수업에서 영화는 수업의 보조 자료로서 단편적인 역할에 머물고 있고, 관련 교과도 서양사 관련 영화에 한정되어 있다. 또한 영화를 활용한 수업에 대한 평가도 객관적인 검증이 결여되어 있다. 따라서 본 연구자는 현행 교육과정에 입각하여 역사 이해에 도움을 주는 한국사 관련 영화를 활용한 수업 모형을 개발하고 이를 실제 수업에 적용함으로써 영화를 활용한 국사 수업이 역사에 대한 학생들의 흥미와 관심 증진 및 역사 이해 함양에 효과적인지 알아보고자 하였다. 특히 영화와 함께 외국인 기록물, 사진 등을 제시하여 학생들이 하나의 역사적 사실 또는 상황에 다양한 관점과 판단이 존재함을 파악할 수 있는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 본 연구를 위해 한국사 관련 영화 중 관련 자료가 풍부하며 역사적 고증을 거친, 전통적인 역사 영화 [개벽]과 신문화사적 연구 성과가 엿보이는 새로운 역사 영화 [YMCA 야구단]을 선정하고 각각 25분 정도로 편집하였다. 영화를 활용한 수업에 대한 학생들의 이해 정도를 알아보기 위해 활동지를 제작한 후, 고등학교 2학년을 대상으로 수업을 실시하고 그 결과를 객관적으로 분석하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영화를 활용한 국사 수업은 학생들의 수업 내용에 대한 이해를 높이고 역사에 대한 흥미와 관심을 향상시키는데 도움이 되었다. 영화 선정 및 편집 과정에 학생들을 참여시킨다면 자기 주도적 학습의 효과 뿐 아니라 영화 편집상의 기술적·시간적 문제까지 해결할 수 있으리라고 본다. 둘째, 영화 [개벽]과 [YMCA 야구단]을 활용한 국사 수업은 학생들의 역사 이해 함양에 도움을 주었다. 즉 역사적 사실과 정보의 이해, 역사적 시간성의 이해, 역사의 상상적 이해 영역 및 역사적 탐구력, 역사적 판단력에 대한 학생들의 이해 능력은 높게 나타났다. 셋째, 학생들은 하나의 역사적 사실 또는 상황에 대해 개인이 처한 입장에 따라 다양한 시각과 관점이 존재할 수 있음을 파악할 수 있었다. 학생들은 영화와 관련 사료들을 해석하고 추론하고 종합함으로써 균형 잡힌 시각을 갖고 올바른 판단을 내리고자 하였다. 한편으로 본 수업이 제대로 정착되기 위해서는, 폭넓은 차원에서 다양한 주제의 영화를 선정하려는 교사의 노력과 역사에 대한 인식의 전환이 필요하고, 수업 이후에도 효과적인 피드백이 이루어지도록 교사와 학생들간의 정보 교환 통로를 마련하는 것도 필요하다. 또한 수업 실시 전과 후의 지필고사 결과 분석을 통해 영화를 활용한 수업이 학업 성취도에 미치는 영향을 파악하는 것도 필요하다. 이러한 연구를 통해 본 연구자는 영화를 활용한 국사 수업 모형이 역사에 대한 학생들의 동기 유발과 관심을 증진시키고 더 나아가 역사 교육의 목표를 달성하는데 유용한 교과 교육 방안이 될 수 있음을 확인하였다. ;The paper aims to select two of Korean history related movies that are of help to understand history, and to develop a model of Korean history teaching using movies. The paper examined that the Korean history teaching using movies made students be more interested in the history subject and was effective at the students' understanding of history. In particular, the study presented foreigners' recording and photographs together with movies to investigate that the students could understand by themselves that there were a variety of viewpoints and judgments at a historical fact and situation. The objects were 140 students of the second year of 'S' High School in Gyeonggi Province for which the author worked, and Korean history teaching model using movies was adopted. The paper selected two of Korean history related movies, [Kaebyeok (the Creation)] and [YMCA Baseball Team], which were suitable to contents of subject and had enough associated material and were historically investigated. The study edited each movie in about 25 minutes of the quantity, and measured students' historical understanding, and produced an activity form to let the students understand the contents of movies and learning and relations with the objectives in comprehensive way. After the lesson was finished, the author investigated the students' reaction on the teaching through questionnaires, and estimated the difficulty, the discrimination and the reliability, etc of each item of the activity form by using the BayesiAn 1.0 for Windows and Microsoft Excel. The findings were as follows: Firstly, the Korean history teaching using movies was of help to elevate the students' understanding on the contents of teaching and to improve their interests in the history. furthermore the students wanted continuous teaching of history using movies. Secondly, the Korean history teaching using both movies above were of help to let the students have high ability on the understanding of history. The difficulty in average of both movies above was rather easy. Nonetheless, the discrimination in average of each movie accounted for proper and high so that the items were found to be good to judge the students' ability: And the reliability (Crobach a) remained high so that the items were found to be appropriate. Thirdly, the students were found to have various viewpoints depending upon each individual's position on one of historical fact and situation. In this paper, the author found that the Korean history teaching model using movies could induce motives and promote interests and furthermore would be an useful education program enough to attain the objectives of history education.
