;Wetlands can transform or remove pollutants from water body, such as nitrogen, phosphate, and organics. Many researches were conducted in relation to uptake process by aquatic plants in wetlands. However, water purification processes in wetlands are the results of physical, chemical and biological, especially microbiological reactions. As such, understanding on microbial processes is of great importance. In this study, we employed pond- or marsh-type wetland and pond/marsh linked wetland microcosms to investigate water purification capacity and microbial functions, namely extracellular enzyme activities nitrification, denitrification. In a batch system experiment, high removal efficiencies (97% and 100%) of nitrate and phosphate appeared to be caused by long retention time and high adsorption capacity to soils. Continuous linked system experiment results showed low inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies -52∼59, -118∼-12%, respectively, due to low denitrification rate and release of phosphate from sediments while nitrification rates were high. Especially, marsh-pond linked microcosm showed stable and high nutrient removal efficiency. Extracellular enzyme activities (β-glucosidase, N-acetylglucosaminidase, phosphatase and arylsulfatase) were higher in the sediment than the water. The results suggest that subsurface flow type and marsh-pond linked wetlands design would provide to the highest nutrient removal efficiency.-
