Roger Quilter의「Five Shakespeare Songs, Op.23」에 관한 연구

Abstract

로져 퀄터(Roger Quilter, 1877-1953)는 에드워드 시대(1901-1951) 이후의 20세기 영국의 예술 가곡에 있어 감상적인 표출로 최고의 음악적 경지를 이루어 낸 작곡가이다. 퀄터의 선율적 감각은 시에 대한 음악적 화답으로 시어의 강세, 문장의 강세와 완벽하게 일치하며, 또한 풍부한 화성을 뒷받침으로 호소력 짙은 가곡을 탄생시킨다. 퀄터 가곡의 특징은 특출한 선율적 감각과 세련됨, 그리고 적절한 시의 선택에 있다. 그가 만들어내는 선율의 서정성과 자연스러움은 누구에게나 쉽게 다가살 수 있는 친근감을 지니고 있다. 월리엄 세익스피어(William Shakespeare 1564-1616) 는 뛰어난 시적 상상력과 인간에 대한 통찰력 그리고 놀랄 만큼 풍부한 언어 구사력 등을 선보이는데, 특히 이 논문에서는 그의 희극 작품인 <Cymbeline>, <As You Like it>,<Measure for Measure>, <Twelfth Night>을 통해 우리에게 닥치는 여러 문제들을 심각하게 받아들이지 않고 좀 더 유희적이며 희극적으로 표현하고자 했다. 퀄터는 「Five Shakespeare Songs, Op. 23(세익스피어의 5개의 노래)」에서 규칙적 각운을 통해 일관성을 추구하고자 했던 세익스피어의 시적 감각을 음악적 통일성으로 이끌어 가고 있다. 선율은 같은 선율 혹은 유사한 선율을 반복하여 형식적으로 유절가곡 내지는 변형된 유절가곡으로 나타난다. 여기서는 퀄터의 음악적 감상성이 부드러운 선율선에서 뿐만 아니라 조성이나 화성 또한 시적인 변화와 움직임에 따라 달라지고 있다. 조성은 주로 낭만파 시대의 일반적인 3도관계(mediant relationship)를 유지하지만 시적 분위기에 따라 시각적으로 고전적인 5도 관계의 느낌을 갖게 하는 전조가 나타난다. 그 이외에도 전조와 상관없는 제 4음이 반음 올라간 경우, 제 7음이 반음 내려간 경우도 나타나며, 색채적 효과를 얻기 위한 부가음의 사용도 보여진다. 빠르기는 극의 분위기에 맞게 음악적으로 표현되며, 다이나믹은 시적인 부분에서의 클라이막스를 f 또는 p 등으로 나타내어 강조하고 있다 본 논문에서는 이러한 연구를 통하여 세익스피어가 표현한 언어의 미적 감각과 이에 상응하는 음악적 아름다움을 감각적으로 잘 승화시켜 나타내고 있는데, 여기서는 그의 음악이 어떤 느낌으로 표현되어지고 있는지를 찾아보았다. ;Roger Quilter(1877-1953) was a composer who attained the highest musical stage of English art song in the 20th century, after the period of Edward (1901-1951), by expressing sentimentalism. Quilter's melodic response to poetry. It also produces attractive art songs based on affluent harmonic sense. His sentimentality and naturalness easily appeal to people. William Shakespeare(1564-1616) displays mastery in the art of language, excellent poetic imagination, and deep insight into the nature of people. Especially, he expressed the various problems that people encounter comically and enjoyably through his comic works <Cymbeline>,<As You Like It>,<Measure for Measure>, and <Twelfth Night>, which are introduced in this paper. Quilter shows musical unity by adopting Shakespeare's poetic sense in「Five Shakespeare Songs, Op. 23」,Which sought consistency through regular end rimes. In these songs, he uses a strophic form or modified strophic form by repeating same or similar melodies. Quiler displays differing forms of musical sentimentality through gentle melodic lines, tonalities, harmonics, and poetic varieties and movements. Tonality is generally maintained through mediant relationship, which had been used mainly in the romantic period. But sometimes the classical fifth modulation is used depending on the poetic mood. Moreover, the sharped-fourth and flated-seventh degrees, which are unrelated to the modulation, are presented. An added-note and parallel 4th progression is also displayed to achieve a color effect. The tempo is musically set according to the poetic atmosphere, and the dynamics expresses the climax by emphasizing forte or piano, depending on the content of the poem. Through this study, the writer has discovered Shakespeare's esthetic sense of language and musical beauty sublimated into Quilter's composing technique of 'sentimentality'.
