시간의 변화에 따른 섬유조형 표현

Abstract

우리는 시간 안에서 살고 있다. 시간의 흐름은 우리의 삶과 같아서 우리가 태어나 자라고, 늙고, 죽는 것 모두 시간 안에서 이루어진다. 우리가 성장과 노화 과정을 겪으며 세월을 느끼듯이 시간은 자연과 주변의 물질 등의 변화를 통해 인식된다. 시간의 흐름은 우리의 삶과 같은 것으로 늘 변화하며, 과거와 현재와 미래가 모두 연결되어 흐르는 지속성을 가지고 흐른다. 본 연구에서는 생활 속에서 늘 사용하는 사물로 마모와 소멸한다는 점에서 우리의 삶을 대변하는 일회용 컵과 옷을 대상으로 하여 이들의 지속적인 변화과정을 통해 시간의 흐름을 시각화 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 그리고 지속적인 변화의 과정과 주기적인 반복을 통해 순환하는 시간의 성질을 표현하고자 하였다. Ⅱ장에서는 서로 상반된 개념이지만 우리의 삶 속에서 늘 함께 공존하는 시간의 개념을 직선적, 순환적 시간개념과 물리적, 심리적 시간개념으로 나누어 고찰하였다. 심리적 시간개념에서는 시간의 특성인 지속성에 대하여 언급하고 다음으로는 지속에 의해 꾸준히 변화하는 시간의 변화성과 주기적인 반복에 따른 시간의 순환성을 인과관계인 윤회사상과 연관시켜 알아보았다. Ⅲ장에서는 세 단락으로 나누었다. 첫째 단락에서는 중세이후부터 근대까지의 서양미술작품에서 시간을 표현한 작품들을 찾아보고 시대나 사조에 따라 시간의 표현을 위해 어떠한 시도를 하였는지 알아보았다. 두번째 단락에서는 동양에서의 시간의 표현을 서양미술에서의 표현과 공통점과 차이점을 비교하여 살펴보았으며, 세 번째 단락에서는 현대의 작품 중에서는 주로 시간의 순환성이 표현된 작품을 위주로 살펴보았다. 작품 제작에 있어서는 본 연구자가 일상에서 우연히 발견한 옷의 낡아지는 모습과 일회용 컵이 비어지면서 변화하는 모습을 시간의 흐름으로 인식하게 되면서 본 연구자가 선택한 컵과 옷을 대상으로 하여 시간의 지속적인 변화와 순환을 표현하였다. 이 과정에서 시간이 가진 심리적인 개념과 물리적인 개념도 함께 표현되었다. 방법적인 측면에서는 제직기법에서 작업을 시작하여 제직한 작품을 디지털 카메라로 찍고 이를 컴퓨터 소프트웨어 프로그램 가운데 하나인 포토샵에서 변형하고 이를 다시 제직하거나 혹은 디지털 프린팅하여 지속적인 변화과정을 표현하였다. 이러한 과정으로 작품 6점을 제작하여 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 피스(piece)작업이 시간의 흐름에 따라 진행하며 변화한 모습을 이전과 이후의 모습을 통해 쉽게 파악할 수 있도록 하였다. 둘째, 피스(piece)작업을 시간 순으로 길게 나열하여 전시함으로써 시간의 흐름이 지속적인 흐름으로 연결되고 시각적으로는 물리적인 시간의 길이로 느껴졌다. 셋째, 한 작품에서 다음 작품으로 이어지는 연관 관계 속에서 지속적인 시간의 흐름을 보여주며 작품 전반에 시간의 지속성을 표현하였다. 넷째, 제직한 옷을 제단하여 옷으로 만들고 제직에서 다시 제직 기법 표현을 통해 순환하는 시간을 시각적으로 표현하였다. 다섯째, 직조 작업 후에 제직한 작품을 디지털 카메라로 사진을 찍고 이를 컴퓨터에 저장하여 포토샵 프로그램에서 변형하여 디지털 프린트하였다. 수공예적인 아날로그 방식인 직조 기법과 함께 디지털 방식인 컴퓨터 소프트웨어 프로그램을 활용한 표현영역의 확장은 섬유를 다중 매체화 시키고 확장하여 다양한 표현가능성을 제시하였다. 본 연구자는 이러한 매체를 이용하여 다양한 과정을 거쳤고 이를 통해 변화하는 대상을 시간의 흐름으로 시각화함으로써 시간이 지닌 다양한 개념들을 함께 표현할 수 있었다. ;We are living in a world of time. Like life, time flows. We are born and grown within the idea of time. However, since time is not visible, we can only notice its flow through changes. Like life, the flow of time is constantly changing. Such are continuous changes due to interconnections between past, present, and future. From the experiment used a disposable cup and clothes to represent our changing life, and visualizing the flow of time. Furthermore, constant changes and periodic repetition were applied in order to express a certain characteristic of time-circulation. In the second part, two sets of contrasting, but coexisting concepts are looked over: linear and circulating concept of time, and physical and psychological idea of time. Continuation, an important characteristic of time, is talked about under the topic of psychological time. Alternation of time through continuation and circulation of time through repetition is then mentioned in relation to cause and effect. The third part is divided into three sections. The former traces artworks back from Middle-age to present. This was to seek for the attempts people made to express themselves at a certain period or trend. Pieces that dealt with circulation of time were mainly considered in the artworks from present-age. The latter section deals with land-art- an art done on earth, changed by nature, and lost by nature. After a land art is lost, it is then recreated, thereby circulating. Linear and circulating idea of time shown by earth-art is again mainly considered. I incidentally noticed a flow of time in everyday life. Specifically from a wearing of clothing and the changes a disposable cup goes through after being emptied. Thus I have chosen the clothing and the cup as my subject to express time's continuous alternation and circulation. In this process, the concept of psychological and physical time was presented as well. Many different methods were used for the experiment. With the production of the art work, pictures were taken and altered or reproduced using Adobe Photoshop. Other methods include using digital printing techniques to show the continuous process of changing. The results obtained through five pieces of art work produced, is as follows: First, as time passes by, differences were easily visible. Second, pieces were arranged in a row starting from the earliest to its latest. The flow of time was interlinked to a continuous flow, and physical length of time was visible through the length of the row. Third, the relationship from one piece to the next showed the continuous flow of time, thereby expressing the endurance of time through out the work. Fourth, circulation of time was visually shown by sewing clothes made by weaving, and re-weaving clothes. Fifth, after the production of the clothing, pictures were taken, modified using Photoshop, and digitally printed. Applying computer technologies with weaving clothes increased the boundaries has stated its possibilities of expressions using fibers through mass-media. I was able to express different ideas and concepts of time along with expressing flow of time experimenting with various process of alternation.
