Abstract

E. Barlach, the outstanding German sculptor of the Expressionist Movement, concentrated himself to explore the human nature, taking the origin and the whereabouts of human life into the forcus of his investigation. Thus, having exploring the human nature, he succeeded to shape his own cosmism based on dualism mingled deeply with the fundamental problems of human nature into moulding, of which achivement is more than significant even in modern era. If it can be defined that the expressionsm is the external expression of the inner necessity or inner emotion, it is also significant to study the background of the sculptural characteristic of E. Barlach's achievement on the basis of the corssectional investigation to promote the closer understanding on his sculptures. The aim of this thesis is to study the sculptural characteristic of E. Barlach's achievement backstaged by German expressionist sculpture activities and thus, to attain to the crossectional close investigation. The method of study are to be outlined as below; Firstly, the forcus of survey is pointed at sculptural characteristics of E. Barlach's productions backstaged by German expressionist sculpture activities. Secondly, the study was concentrated to distinguish his expressionism by classifying into the three catagories of Spirituality, Sociology and Religion. This thesis is strictly stuck to documentary records and the works of E. Barlach in the methodlogy, which are used for study of characteristics of German Expressionism and the works of E. Barlanch. Selections of E. Barlach's works in this study are based on the underspecified standard; - 27 items of his works in which the sculptor's characters on spirituality is distinctly traceable are selected, - 9 items of works which are sociological, - 9 items of religiously characteristic, Thus, as the result, firstly, the spirituality is expressed his unceasing process of discord and harmony, or complications and transcendences. Secondly, the Sociology is shown in his mofits of the various scenes of war, which express the compassion intermingled with humanity in the background, proposing the visions of the new terms of human life as the consequence. Lastly, the religion of E. Barlach is colored with the transcendency and mystery which are the backbone of his whole productive activities. In short, as referred in above, through the close survey on the works of his sculptural world based on his sculptural characteristics and symbolic sihnificances which his works express, it can be summarised that through his exploration on human nature and pursue on the course of human life, E. Barlach had brought forward the vision of the existential human being enhanced in the light of humanity to the modern recogintion on the tregedy and the pursue of humanity.;독일 표현주의 조각가의 한 사람인 Ernst Barlach는 인간의 起源과 方向을 주제로 하여 人間本質에 대한 추구를 해 왔다. 그 결과 그의 二元論的 世界觀이 인간의 본질적인 문제들과 결부되어 조형화되었다. 표현주의를 인간의 內的 體驗의 外的表現이라 할 때, E. Barlach조각의 내용적 측면의 검토는 고의 작품을 이해하는데 있어서 의의가 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 E. Barlach조각의 조형적 특성을 분석하여 그 작품에 포함된 내용적 측면을 고찰하는데 있다. 따라서 첫째, 독일 표현주의 조각의 특성을 배경으로 E. Barlach 조각의 조형적 특성을 고찰하였다. 둘째, E. Barlach작품의 내용적 특성을 규명하고자 그의 작품을 주제별로 精神性, 社會性, 宗敎性으로 분류하여 그 특성을 검토하였다. 본 연구의 방법은 문헌과 작품을 기본자료로 하였다. 문헌은 독일 표현주의와 E. Barlach조각의 특성을 분석하는데 사용하였다. 작품표집은 그의 조각의 내용적 측면을 고찰하기 위하여, 주제별로 精神性 27점, 社會性 9점, 宗敎性 9점을 그 특성이 잘 표현된 것으로 목적표집하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 精神性은 그의 이원론적 세계관에서 유래하는 葛藤과 超越의 過程을 표현한다. 둘째, 社會性은 주로 전쟁을 중심으로 한 주제들 속에서 나타나며 人間愛를 배경으로 연민을 표현하는데, 새로운 人間條件에 대한 vision의 제시가 결과로 나타난다. 셋째, 宗敎性은 超越과 神秘를 특성으로 하며 그의 전 조형의 기본방향이다. 위와같이 그의 조형적 특성과 내용이 가지는 상징적 측면을 통해 E. Barlach의 작품세계를 고찰해 본 결과는 다음과 같다. E. Barlach가 추구한 인간의 본질과 방향에 대한 연구는 오늘날 현대인의 悲劇性의 認識과 人間性의 追求에 대하여 인간애를 바탕으로 한 實在的 人間의 vision을 제시한다.
