Abstract
As the forms of delivery of human feelings and spirit, the formative arts in the 20th century are being transfigured into the creative and symbolic meanings which are not imitations or reproductions of the past era. This study was designed to examine the formative characteristics by analyzing the works of Seymour Lipton who has been giving a symbolic expression by investigating a new formative order through the interior anatomical analysis of objects. The objectives of this study were first to identify the formative idea and the abstraction making process of Seymour Lipton (1903- ), an experimental sculptor of the United States of America, by establishing the expression characteristics through the analysis of the works and secondly to examine the symbolism of the works. The contents of this study no only described a historical background of S. Lipton's works and their school characteristics but also defined both the formative idea formed during the suddenly changing post-war generation and the symbolism of the works. His works were analyzed in an effort to understand the abstraction making process by first classifying them into a representational form and an abstract form depending on the mode of expression and then deviding the symbolic characteristics into four different forms. This study was carried out by using references, periodicals and catalogs from the exhibitions as basic tools; the literature reviews centered on a theoretical background and according to the classified areas, the works were objectively sampled by characteristics with 87 points being a standard of significance. The results of this study are summarized as follows : 1. S. Lipton's works can be devided into a representational form and an abstract form depending on the mode of expression. 2. The representational form of works briefly symbolized the human lifetime at war in a violent and exaggerated expression which is expressionistic. 3. Taking a hint from the natural objects, the abstract form of works has objective nature and shows an abstract expression by experimental work based on interior anatomy. 4. As a theoretical analysis based on interior anatomy of object the formative characteristic of the works is that the transcendental symbol of human spirit gives an organic expression of the space and form by way of the abstract developing stage.;20C의 造形藝術은 人間感情과 精神을 전달하는 形態로서 과거시대의 모방이나 再現이 아닌 創造와 象徵的 의미로 變貌되고 있다. 本 硏究는 對象物의 內面解剖學的 分析에 의해 새로운 造形秩序를 탐구하여, 상징적 표현을 해온 Seymour Lipton의 作品을 分析하여 造形的 特注을 考察하고자 한다. 本 硏究의 目的은 美國의 실험조각가인 Seymour Lipton(1903~)의 作品分析을 통하여 作品의 抽象化 과정을 밝히고 作品의 表現特性과 象徵性을 糾明하는데 있다. 本 硏究의 內容은 S.Lipton作品의 時代的 背最과 戰後世代에 形成된 造形理念을 밝히고 作品의 象徵性을 分析하였다. 作品分析은 表現樣式에 따라 具象形態와 抽象形態로 분류하였고 추상형태는 네가지 형태로 상징의 특성을 분류하여 추상화 과정을 把握하였다. 本 硏究의 方法은 연구문헌과 정기 간행지, 전시회 카타로그를 基本道具로 하였으며 문헌은 이론적 배경을 中心으로 연구하였고, 作品은 분류된 영역에 따라 네가지 특성별로 目的標出하여 87點을 대상으로 하였다. 硏究의 結果를 要約하면 다음과 같다. 1. S.Lipton의 作品은 表親樣式에 따라 具象形態와 抽象形態로 分類된다. 2. 具象形態의 作品에서는 戰爭속의 人間의 一生을 表現主義的인 격렬하고 과장된 표현을 간략한 볼륨으로 상징하였다. 3. 抽象形態의 作品에서는 對象性 抽象形態로서 內面解部學을 토대로 실험적 작업에 의한 압축된 추상표현으로 나타나고 있다. 4. S.Lipton의 造形世界는 對象物의 골격구조를 파악하여 空間과의 유기적 결합을 再構成하고 있다. 作品의 造形的 特性은 對象의 內面解割學(inteior anatomy)에 기초를 둔 논리적 분석에 의한 형태표현이며, 人間情神의 초월적인 상징이 추상적 발전단계를 거쳐 공간과 형태가 유기적으로 결합되고 있다.
