20세기 Light Art의 경향

Abstract

(이전원문누락) points of analytic view which were to prove the formative properties and the effects of light art that appears as a result of the techniques of using light sources. The survey method of this study was instrumentalised by its independent volumes, catalogues, art magazines and treatises etc. As for the sampling of the works, an analysis was performed on the sampling the total of 86 items that are properly expressed in its peculiarities by representative light artists who are still lively acting in their own fields. The representative artists who are classified by the light sources they mainly use are Bruce Nauman who used neon, Jenny Holzer who established the socialization of art by installing L.E.D. light board outdoors, the minimalist Dan Flavin who used fluorscent light, James Turrell who used artificial light and natural light together to examine the visual functional relation aming light, space and observer. The standards of this analysis are the idea, the type of light, the technique, the motive of the work, the lighting effect, the function of light, the color of light, the movement of light, the place where the work is installed and the subject of the work. The consequences of this analysis are given as follows: 1. When the sense of movement such as L. E. D board or flickering switch is joined with light art, apart from the visual lshock of light art, as we could see in the works of Bruce Nauman, the effect combines with the message of the work and shows an energetic effect that act even on the sensibility of the audience. In addition, the expression of 'Time' by a sense of ovement of a constant interval elevate the status of light art to a higher status. 2. Through the skill like using a strong complementary color to make a story which is related to problems of people's life to be easily accepted as Jenny Holzer did and through the skill like coloring a reflected light and installing the light in a certain place as Dan Flavin did, light art can induce the audience to directly participate in a work of art. 3. The ideologies or the apperance of light works are compunded, however in the expressional way, light works keep simple construction that exclude an ornamental tendency thus light works collect and express materials that help people understand them easily and keep popular expressional way so as to achieve an art form that matches the age of scientific technique of the twentieth century.;과학기술이 급속도로 발달하면서 Kinetic Art와 함께 등장한 Light의 사용은 현대 미술에서 커다란 비중을 차지하게 되었다. Light의 사용은 예술과 과학의 결합이라는 보다 새로운 조형적 가능성을 시사해 주었으며 1960년대 Light Art를 형성하는 원동력이 되었다. 오늘날까지 과학기술 발달에 따른 Light의 종류는 수없이 증가하고 있으나, 우리가 쉽게 접하고 예술가들이 주로 작품 제작에 이용해 온 Light매체를 중심으로 작품을 비교하여 Light Art의 조형적 특성을 규명할 필요가 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 Light을 이용한 작가들의 작품을 비교하여 그 조형적 특성 및 효과를 규명하는데 있다. 본 연구의 내용은 현대에 활동하고 있는 작가들 중 Light의 종류에 따라 대표적인 4인의 작품을 광원의 기법상 나타나는 Light Art의 조형적 특성 및 효과를 규명하기 위한 10가지 분석관점에 맞춰 비교 분석하였다. 본 연구의 방법은 단행본, Catalogue, 미술잡지, 연구논문 등의 선행연구와 작품을 기본도구로 하였다. 작품 표집은 작품에 나타난 Light Art의 조형적 특성 및 효과를 규명하기 위하여 현재까지 활동하고 있는 광원별 대표적인 Light 작가들의 작품중 Light Art의 특성이 적절히 표현된 작품 총 86점을 대상으로 목적표출하였다. 광원의 종류별 대표적인 작가는 Neon을 사용한 Bruce Nauman, L. E. D. 전광판을 실외에 설치하여 예술의 사회화를 이룩한 Jenny Holzer, 형광등을 이용한 Minimal 작가 Dan Flavin, 빛과 공간, 관찰자간의 시각적 함수관계를 규명하기 위해 인공의 빛과 자연광을 함께 이용한 James Turrell이 있고, Light Art의 조형적 특성을 규명하기 위한 분석 기준으로 작가의 이념, 광의 종류, 기법, 제작동기, 효과, 기능, 색채, 운동감, 설치장소, 주제의 10가지 관점에서 분석하였다. 작품 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, Light Art에 L. E. D. 계기판, 점멸기 등의 운동감을 나타내는 요소들을 결합하였을때 Light Art의 시각적 충격 이외에 B. Nauman의 작품에서 보여진것 같이 작품이 나타내는 메시지와 결합되어 관객의 감성에 까지 영향을 미치는 적극적 효과를 나타내고, 일정한 간격의 운동감에 의한 시간성의 표현은 보다 고차원적인 예술품으로 전환시킨다. 둘째, Light Art는 J. Holzer의 작품에서와 같이 대중의 삶의 문제와 관련된 내용을 시각적으로 쉽게 수용할 수 있도록 강한 보색대비의 색을 사용한 것과 D. Flavin이 반사되는 빛에 색을 첨가하여 공간에 설치작업 형식으로 제작하는 등의 방법은 관객을 예술 작품에 직접적으로 참여시키거나 유도하는 역할을 한다. 세째, Light작품에 나타난 이념이나 양상은 복합적이지만 표현양식에 있어서는 장식성을 배제한 단순한 구조를 그대로 이용하였고 대중에게 알기 쉽게 매체를 선택·표현하여 대중적인 표현양식을 지니는 20세기 과학기술시대에 맞는 예술형식을 취한다.
