Robert Smithson의 Earth Art

Abstract

현대예술에 있어 새로운 재료의 발견과 그에 따른, 새로운 시각형식의 탐구는 중요한 과제다. Robert Smithson은 자연이라는 새로운 재료로 대지미술( earthart )이란 새로운 조형형식을 이루었다. 본 연구의 목적은 Robert Smithson의 대지미술을 분석해 봄으로써 그 특성을 찾아내는데 있다. 본 연구의 내용은 Robert Smithson의 예술세계와 대지미술의 발단과 전개를 고찰하여 Robert Smithson의 대지미술의 특성을 분석하였다. 본 연구의 방법은 문헌조사와 작품을 중심으로 하였으며, Robert Smithson의 대지미술을 대표하는 작품 33점을 유의 표출하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. Robert Smithson의 대지미술은 표현전개에 따라 자연물과 인공물의 대비, 자연환경의 변형으로 분류된다. 2. 자연물과 인공물의 대비에서 자연물을 objet로 선택함으로써 실제의 환경을 그대로 조각의 일부로 표현했다. 자연물이 실내로 옮겨져 인공물과 대비된 경우 변증법이란 모순된 사상체계의 결합을 작품속에 표출하여 상반된 개념을 추구하였다. 인공물이 자연환경에 놓임으로서 대비된 경우 전시장의 한계를 벗어나 작품규모의 확대와 자연환경을 작품에 반영하여 우연적인 효과와 과정의 행위를 강조했다. 3. 자연환경의 변형에서는 산업기술의 발달로 황폐해진 버려진 공간을 대지미술이라는 작업을 통해 자연환경의 재창조를 시도했다. R. Smithson의 대지미술은 objet로서의 자연의 재인식, 상반되는 개념의 추구 작품규모의 확대 우연의 효과와 행위과정의 강조를 특성으로 갖고 있으며 이런 모든 특성은 버려진 공간을 새로운 공간으로 환원시키는 대지미술 작업속으로 결합되어진다.;It is important problem to discover new materials and to research new visual forms in the modern art. Robert Smithson made a new formative mode named 'earth art' with nature being new materials. The purpose of this study is to find out characters of Robert Smithson's earth art through the analysis of his earth art. In contents of this study I analyzed characters of Robert Smithson's earth art through investigating his view of art and the biginning ＆ development of earth art. I mainly referred to documents and works of Robert Smithson, and mentioned thirty-three representive works of his earth art for this study. Then, the result of this study is as follows: First, Robert Smithson's earth art is classified into the contrast of natural materials and artificial materials or the transformation of natural surroundings according to the expressional development. Second, he expressed real circumstances as a part of sculpture by selecting natural materials as object in the contrast of natural and artificial materials. He sought contrary conception with expressing the combination of contradictory thoughts system so called 'dialectic' in his works in case that natural materials moved on the interior of a room and contrasted with artificial materials. He also emphasized accidental effects and progressive deeds with reflecting the enlargement of his work scale and natural surroundings on his works beyond the limitation of the exhibition place in case that artificial materials was placed at natural circumstances and contrasted with natural materials. Third, in the transformation of natural surroundings he tried to the recreation of natural circumstances through expressing 'earth art' with the space dilapidated because of the development of industrial technique. Robert Smithson's earth art is characterized as re-cognition of nature as object, the pursuit of contrary conception, the enlargment of his work scale, the accidental effects and the emphasis of actual progress. And then, all these characters are combined with earth art which restores the dilapidated space to the new space.
