"나무들 비탈에 서다"에 관한 硏究

Abstract

人間 本性과 순수를 추구하는 黃順元의 作品世界는 초기 단편의 주조를 이루었던 抒情性의 측면에서 6.25라는 역사적 現實을 맞으며 발표된 일련의 장편소설, "카인의 후예" (1954) "인간접목" (1957) "나무들 비탈에 서다" (1960) 등에 이르면서 조금씩 변모하기 시작하였다. 특히 作品 "나무들 비탈에 서다"에서는 人間 운명에 대한 초기의 美學的 신뢰가 전쟁을 겪으면서 짙은 좌절감으로 변모해가는 과정이 잘 나타나 있다. 즉 6.25라는 역사가운데 처해진 개인들의 문제에 관심을 갖기 시작한 황순원이, 절실한 現實의 문제를 "유리"라는 강한 상징적 이미지를 通해 제시한 力作이었다. 본고에서는 作品, "나무들 비탈에 서다"에 등장하는 作中人物들이 "유리"의 독소앞에 파멸되고 상처받는 과정을 중점적으로 분석하여 보고, 6.25라는 極限的 現實을 소재로 하는 他作品과 비교 고찰하여 現實의 문제가 어떻게 달리 투영되고 있는가를 살펴보았다. "나무들 비탈에 서다"에 등장하는 主人公들은 韓國戰爭이 주는 極限狀況에 처해 각자의 自我와 自意識에 따른 여러 형태를 겪으며 자기대로의 삶을 영위하고 절망하고 죽는다. 그러므로 "나무들 비탈에 서다"에 등장하는 人物들은 戰爭에 참전했거나 혹은 간접적으로 戰爭을 체험하였던 간에 여러 양상의 悲劇的 피해와 상처를 입는 戰後 인간상으로, 6.25라는 極限現實을 상징하는 "유리"의 공포앞에, 그리고 그 "유리"의 파편으로 고뇌하며 피해받는 젊은이들이었다. 이것은 6.25를 소재로 하되 現實에 때묻지 않는 人間의 아름다운 本性을 표출하고 있는 他作品, 즉 장편 "인간접목"이나 단편 "학", "가랑비", "소리", "송아지" 등과는 다른 양상을 보여주고 있다. 즉 위의 作品들에서는 6.25라는 現實을 배경으로 하여 인간 원형의 실체에 깊은 관심을 보이는 作家 황순원의 기본적 태도가 잘 표출되는 反面에, "나무들 비탈에 서다"에서는 6.25라는 現實이 주제로서 크게 作用하여 그 속에서 파멸해가는 人間 本性의 문제를 다루었다는 점에서 그 차이점을 드러내고 있다. 이상으로 황순원은 6.25소재의 몇몇 단편들에서는 戰爭 체험을 쓰면서도 戰爭 체험을 쓰면서도 戰爭의 실상을 직접 기록하는 것이 아니라 이 역사적인 사건을 겪으면서 상처입은 마음들, 다시 말해 人間의 本性을 묘사하였음을 알게 된다. 그리고 그는 6.25라는 전도체를 통하여 비로소 순수의 양면성에 눈을 돌리게 되었다. 순수한 것은 아름답다는 것이 황순원의 기본 명제였고, 이는 단편장르에서 익숙해진 단선적 論理였던 反面에 "나무들 비탈에 서다"에서는 순수의 이면에 있음직한 부정성까지도 파악하고 있어 이 作家가 장편적 리얼리즘으로 文學世界를 넓혀가고 있음을 잘 보여주고 있다. 또한 1960年 "思想界"에 二部로 연재되었던 이 作品은 제1부에서는 戰爭의 비참성과 불안의식이 그려져 있고, 제2부에서는 전후의 허무와 피해자의식이 주는 연쇄적 비극을 묘사했는데, 본고에서는 1 , 2부에 등장하는 人物들의 성격을 대조하여 분석하였고 "유리"를 통한 현실의 문제를 중점적으로 고찰하여 보았다.;In lyric side which is the main current of early short stories, the world of Whang Sun-Won's novels to pursue the human nature and purity beings to change in a series novels, Decendant of Kain (1954), Human-being relationship (1957) and Trees on the Cliff (1960) published in the Korean War. Especially, Trees on the Cliff tells us that the aesthetic trust of the human destiny truns into the frustration by the war Namely, the author who takes an interest in the individual problem expresses the urgent problem through the symbolic image called "glass" in this book. This study shows the analysis of the course that characters are ruined by the posion of "glass" and the comparison with the real problem displayed in other novels written about the Korean War. In Trees on the Cliff, the central characters meet the various difficulties casued by the ego and self-consciousness in the worst situation of the Korean War, live as they wish and die in despair. Whether characters participate in a war directly or not, they, young men, suffer from damage and are troubled with the pieces of "glass" and the fear of "glass" to symbol the urgent situation of the Korean War. This story represents different aspect from other novels with the theme of the Korean War, namely, the long novel of Human-being-relationship and the short stories of Crane, Drizzle, Voice and Calf, which show the human good nature. The difference is as follows. The above novels represent the author's basic attitude to express the original human nature and Trees on the Cliff shows the problems of the human nature ruined by the Korean War that is the theme of this story. The author dosen't show the true picture of the war directly in his early short written by the war experience, but shows the human nature, namely, the human mind caused by this historical event. He gets to realize the two sides of the purity through the Korean War. The basic proposition written in the short stories is that the puriyt is beautiful. Trees on the Cliff contains the negative, side of the purity and shows that the world of his literature is extended to the realism.
