John Chamberlain作品의 造形的 特性에 관한 硏究

Abstract

현대미술의 혁명은 objet의 出現으로 비롯되며 1960년대 이후의 objet는 현대문명사회가 배출하는 폐기물을 美術의 영역에 결합시킨 Assemblage계열의 폐품예술에서 절정을 이룬다. 폐품을 이용해 조형세계를 구축한 J. Chamberlain은 자동차폐품으로 제작한 作品의 테두리 안에서만 평가되어져 왔으나, 본 연구에서는 그의 作品世界 전반에 걸친 고찰을 통해 그가 다양한 양식의 체험이 있는 실험적 作家임을 재인식하고, 어떤 造形的 特性을 가지는지를 연구하는 데 意義를 갖는다. 본 연구의 目的은 J. Chamberlain作品의 造形的 特性을 규명하는 데 있다. 본 연구의 內容은 時代的 背景, J. Chamberlain의 예술세계, J. Chamberlain作品의 비평적 접근을 고찰하여 J. Chamberlain作品에 나타난 造形約 特性을 分析하였다. 본 연구의 方法은 문헌과 作品을 기본도구로 하였으며, 작품표집은 시기와 유형별로 목적표출하여 초기 16점, 중기 27점, 후기 29점, 모두 72점을 대상으로 하였다. 자료처리는 作品의 造形性을 고찰하여 造形的 特性을 규명하였다. 본 연구의 結果는 다음과 같다. 첫째, J. Chamberlain作品은 전반적으로 우연의 美學에 기초하여 형성된다. 初期作品의 무작위하게 연결하고 접합시킨 형태와, 中期作品에서 즉석조각( Instant Sculpture )의 신속한 제작방법, 後期作品의 무작위한 색칠방법 등은 모두 우연성을 기본으로 이루어진다. 둘째, J. Chamberlain作品은 시각적인 다채로움으로 색채성을 획득한다. 初期作品은 이미 갖추어진 자동차폐품의 색채로 收集된 색채조화를 이루며 다양한 색채의 대비로 시각적 효과를 강조한다. 後期作品은 채색된 자동차폐품 위에 다양한 방법으로 색채를 첨가함으로써 시각적 현란함과 회화적인 특성을 지닌다. 세째, J. Chamberlain作品은 풍부한 볼륨성을 갖는다. 初期作品의 무작위한 조립방법은 自發的이고 복잡한 볼륨성을 지니며, 中期作品은 전반적으로 구기고 뭉치는 방법에 의한 비교적 단순한 볼륨성을 획득하며, 後期作品은 사선, 수직, 수평의 형태로 構造的인 볼륨성을 갖는다. 네째, J. Chamberlain作品은 무중량성을 갖는다. 금속 위에 가해진 색채는 순수히 시각성을 강조하여 소재감이 제거됨으로써 중량감을 버리게 된다. 中期作品의 무중량성은 모두 가볍고 영구성이 없는 소재로 예술의 무상성과 문명비판의 개념적인 성격을 지닌다. 이와 같이 J. Chamberlain은 현대문명 사회의 부산물인 자동차폐품이나 다양한 산업재료를 집성하여 회화적인 심미성을 가지고 복잡하고 화려한 Baroque적 형태를 창조했다.;The revolution of modern fine arts was derived from the emergence of objet, and the "Objet" following the 1960th reaches the summit from 'Junk art' of "Assemblage" chain which the wastes poured by the modern civilization society were linked with. John Chamberlain who has build the formative world utilized by the wastes has been appraised only within the frame of his works made of automobile Junks. However, in this thesis, through the analysis ranging over all the aspects of his works, recognizing anew that he would be the experimental artist with the diversified experiences of various modes, a significance is placed on studing whether what kind of formative peculiarity he does have or not. The purpose of this study is to identify the figurative characteristics of the artpieces of J. Chamberlain. For this, the background of the times, J. Chamberlain's artistic world, the critical approaches in J. ChamberLain's artpieces were explored to analyze the figurative characteristics appeared in J. Chamberlain's works. Basically, literaries and works were made use of as the required tools. Work sampling followed purposeful sampling classified by periods and modes. Thereupon subjected were total 72 pieces: 16 pieces of the early period, and 27 pieces of the middle period, and 29 pieces of the latter period. And the materials were processed for the identification of their figurative characteristics. The findings of this study are as follows : Firstly , the works by John Chamberlain were formed on the basis of casual aesthetics rather than artificial exactness. In the initial works, under the influence of abstract expressionism emphasizing spontaneous gestures as acting and proceedings, the forms that were connected and joined randomly with automobile junks, the works of the middle period, the manufacturing method consisting with the act of 'demolishing and lumping' of 'Instant Sculpture', and the random coloring method, etc. on the automobile junks were formed on the basis of all fortuities in the latter period. Secondly, the works by John Chamberlain are boasting of their coloring characteristics with visual colorfulness. The works in the initial period are made of color harmony with which the colors of automobile junks have been already arranged, and it emphasizes visual effects with the contrast of diverse colors. The works in the latter period have visual gorgeousness and pictorial peculiarity by adding colors with diversified method on the painted automobile junks. Thirdly, the works of John Chamberlain have abundant volumes. The initial works were randomly made of automobile Junks through the process of 'Assemblage', and it forms spontaneous and complicated volums. His works in the middle period obtained relatively simple volumes by 'demolishing and lumping' mothod, and the works in the latter period have structural volumes with the forms of oblique lines, vertical lines and horizon. Fourthly, the works of John Chamberlain have weightlessness. The colors added on the metals would abandon its weight by eliminating the materials though emphasizing pure visualization. The phenomena of the weighlessness in the works of the middle period have the uncertainty of the art and the criticism of destiny as well as conceptual thought with all of light and impermanent materials. As described in the foregoing, John Chamberlain is certainly deserved to be remarked as the artist who created tangled and brilliant 'Baroque' forms with pictorial mysteries by compiling the automobile junks as the by-products of modern civilization society and diverse industrial materials.
