축적을 통한 시간 이미지 표현

Abstract

시간은 현존을 포함하고 있다. 현존은 시간 안에 있다. 시간은 눈에 보이는 것도 신체로 지각할 수 있는 것도 아니다. 이러한 시간은 인간 존재의 조건이며 시간에 대한 문제는 여러 철학자들의 관심사였고 예술가들에게는 흥미 있는 조형적 탐구 대상이다. 시간을 바라보는 관점은 문화와 시대에 따라 다양하며 그 시간을 보는 관점에 따라 그들의 일상에서의 모습도 달라진다. 결과적으로 시간의 문제에서 중요한 것은 그것을 바라보는 태도와 방법에 있다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 바라보는 시간은 인간의 삶의 조건이며 지속적인 변화와 흐름의 특징을 가지고 있다. 그리고 그 안에 존재하는 실존 역시 시간 흐름의 과정 안에서 항상 변화하며 만들어져간다. 물질의 형태로 존재하지 않는 시간은 실존을 통해 자신을 드러낸다. 그러므로 시간은 실존 안에서 발견되어진다. 본 연구의 목적은 시간의 본질은 흐르는 과정 속에서 파악되고 인간은 그 흐르는 시간 안에서 존재하며, 지나간 시간은 현재의 존재 안에서 발견되어질 수 있다는 생각을 바탕으로 실존 안에서 시간이 축적되어 가는 과정을 보여주고 이를 통해 시간의 이미지를 표현하는 것이 목적이다. 이론적 배경으로는 시간과 실재적 존재에 관련된 여러 개념들과 과정미술에 대하여 살펴보았다. 다양한 시각에서 이해되었던 실존과 시간의 개념들을 살펴봄으로써 실존과 시간의 관계에 대한 이해를 돕는다. 앞에서 밝혔듯이 시간은 고정되어 있는 것이 아니기에 이를 표현하기 위해 '과정'의 개념을 작품에 사용한 작가들이 있다. 시간성을 강조하면서 실존적인 의미로 '과정'을 작업의 개념으로 선택한 과정미술(科程美術, process art)에 대해 서술하고, 과정을 중요한 요소로 여긴 작가의 작업을 예로 든다. 표현 내용에서는 시간의 축적으로 이루어진 실존에 대한 내용을 다루었으며, 이에 따른 표현 방법으로는 본 연구의 주된 작품 제작 방법인 반복과 집적에 대해 연구하였다. 시간을 기록한 반복에서 사용한 반복의 방법과 개념을 살펴보고 연구자의 작업에서 나타난 반복의 개념적 근거를 제시한다. 본 연구에서 사용된 반복은 시간은 계속 흐르고 존재는 흘러가는 시간을 축적하면서 항상 만들어지고 변화하는 모습을 표현하기 위한 작업 방법으로 사용된다. 작업들은 작은 요소들이 축적되어진 형태이며 계속 변화가능하고 무한히 확장할 수 있는 과정의 상태의 작업과 일상 속에서 체험하는 시간을 기록한다는 태도로 작업을 한 작품들을 연구하였다. 이러한 내용을 담은 작품 7개는 작은 단일체들의 집합으로 만들어졌으며, 무한한 확장의 가능성을 가지고 있다.;Time comprises the existence. Every existence is in time. Time can't be perceived by seeing and touching. The matter of time which is a condition of human being has been a most intriguing subject for philosophers and artists at all times. A point of view for time is various according to an era and its culture, and by that, a daily routine of human being can be various as well. In conclusion, the most important matter of time would be the way of how to look it up and to face it with. In this study, the meaning of time would be a condition of human life and the continuous change and passage. The being which happens to exist in time is also made in the process of the continuous change and passage of time. Time doesn't exist as a formed object. So it is tend to indicate itself through the existence and therefore, time can be found in the form of existence. The purpose of this study is to express the image of time by showing the process of accumulation in the existence. It is based on the thoughts that the past can be found in the present existence and that the essence of time can be understanding in the process of passage where human being exists. For the theoretical study, the conceptions of time, the existence, and the process art had been looked up. The conception of Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) is taken to figure out the relationship between time and existence. Also the conception of Henri Louis Bergson (1859-1941), the process philosophy of A. N. Whitehead (1861-1947) and every various view of conception for the time and existence are used for the easier understanding of this study. As previously stated, time is not fixed but changeable. There are the artists who used the conception of process for their works to prove that. In this study, process art which emphasizes on time and existentialism is described with the examples of artists who took the process concept for their works. About the existence which is formed by the accumulation of time and as it is followed to the repetition, the accumulation, and the method of working process for this study are researched for the matter of expression. The works of minimalists who used the conception and method of repetition had been compared with my own works. The repetition in this study is the method to express the existence which always can be created and changed by the continuously changable passage of time. The form of work is the accumulation of small elements which is able to be changed continuously and be extended infinitely under the circumstances of recording the time experience and work process. All of the 7 works according to the previous method in this study are made with the collection of small unities and yet, still are possible to be extended infinitely. 4 out of 7 works are presented as the process works which are not fully completed but are expressed for the existence which can be always being created.
