원(圓)을 통한 윤회(輪廻)의 표현

Abstract

In a fast-changing society, human beings cannot afford to spend the time to judge whether their deed is right or wrong. Most people tend to acknowledge nothing but the reality that they can see with their physical eyes. They believe the space in which they live is everything. However, human life constantly circulates, forming a cycle. Such circulation of life is called transmigration in Buddhist terms. This paper has the aim of theoretically summarizing transmigration through circle, which will serve as a basis to reflect on my works so far. In dictionary, circle simply refers to round shape. Simple is not only its figure but also its universal definition. But, if we take a step ahead to look further into circle, it holds much more meanings than it seems. In the Oriental society, circle has an implication of protecting and strengthening' what is inside or restricting what is outside. In this context, circle denotes soul and the source of all existences. Many of philosophers and psychologists have defined that circle symbolizes the eternity of mental world. Circle appears as a pattern, which makes a deep impression on human mind with its visually powerful impact. Although Optical Art is usually composed of plane elements rather than three-dimensional ones, it emphasizes a sense of space, which gives the illusion of three-dimensional space. My works seem to be influenced by op art and minimalism, but there are difference in the sense that optical artists and minimalists maintain a neutral and objective attitude without injecting any meaning into their works, while my works internally reflect my personal will and attitude to deal with life. My works combine the form of minimalism and op art with the Oriental thought of transmigration, which turn ultimately into a ritual act to put the whole mind to every touch. Whereas such artists a s Frank Stella (1936- ) and Donald Judd (1928-1994) repeat shapes to restore the property of matter, I elaborately express the colors of band in an attempt to live a better life in the next life. By repeating bands, I intend to lead people to indirectly feel that life keeps moving in a cycle. In general I work on either painting or printmaking that has the characteristic of replication. In my printmaking works, circle partially existing on a screen turns into a whole shape through its repetitive act. Also, lithographic works cause the illusion of three-dimensional space with the colors of band repeating on a plane space. However, when I finally come to Paper Casting works after trials with painting and lithograph, three-dimensional should be seen a s it is, influenced by the phenomenological aspect of minimalism. I had the intention of extending the perception of three dimensional space that takes place on plane space by the illusion of eyes into a three dimensional space that actually exists. In my painting works, circle exists on a screen with different backgrounds. The circle appears by the repetition of bands designed to induce optical illusion. Painting works also enjoy the accidental effect of dyes that is not applied to print makings, adding the sense of speed and movement. It demonstrates the characteristics of spontaneity and accident that can be found in abstract expressionism. Through this study, I came to understand the Oriental theory of transmigration, which is not visible, into an existence utilizing the figure of circle. In addition, by adopting the formative characteristics of minimalism and op art, I achieved the coexistence of Oriental internal meanings and Occidental external shapes on the same space. I hope that this paper could deliver the message that even if a theory cannot be proven scientifically and seen visually, we should not ignore it, offering other people a chance to think deeply of their lives despite the fast-paced environment. At the same time, I expect that this paper will serve a s an opportunity to reflect on my past works and move on for new works that wont cause any regret.;급변하는 현대 사회 속에서 인간은 자신의 행동에 대해 옳고 그름을 판단할 수 있는 시간적 여유를 가지고 있지 않다. 대부분의 사람들은 보이는 현실만을 인정하려 하며, 자신이 살고 있는 공간만이 전부라고 판단하여 생활하고 있다. 그러나 삶은 계속 순환하고 있는 주기를 형성하고 있다. 이러한 삶의 순환적 의미를 종교적 표현으로 '윤회(輪廻)'라 한다. 본 논문은 삶의 순환적 의미를 지닌 윤회를 원의 의미를 통해 이론적으로 정리하며, 정리되어진 이론을 바탕으로 작업된 작품을 되돌아보기 위해 쓰여졌다. 원(圓)은 사전적으로 둥글다 혹은 동그라미라는 보여지는 단순한 형태와 마찬가지로 보편적으로 정의되어지는 의미 또한 단순하다. 그러나 한 걸음 더 깊이 들어가 원을 되짚어 본다면 그곳에는 보다 많은 의미들이 자리하고 있다. 동양에 있어서 원은 둘러싸고 있는 모든 것을 보호, 강화하거나 제한한다는 의미를 가지고 있다. 하나의 중심, 혹은 그 중심에서 퍼져 나가는 모든 것을 원이라 부른다. 때문에 원은 영혼을 상징하며 모든 생명의 원천 그리고 존재하는 모든 것의 근원으로 자리하고 있다. 대부분의 철학자나 심리학자들은 원을 정신세계의 영원성을 상징한다고 정의하였다. 이러한 원은 패턴으로 등장하며 이러한 패턴은 시각적으로 강하게 작용하여 인간의 뇌리에 인식되어진다. 옵아트에서는 입체적인 형태보다는 평면적인 것으로 이루어진 것이 많으나 색의 차이로 인하여 입체감이나 공간감을 강조하였으며 이로 인해 마치 평면에서 입체를 보는 착각을 일으키기도 한다. 본인은 외형적으로 옵아트와 미니멀리즘에 영향을 받았으나 중립적이고 객관적인 작업태도를 가지고 있는 옵아트와 미니멀리즘 작가의 작품들과는 다르게 그 이면에는 삶을 대하는 본인의 의지와 태도가 내포되어 있다. 본인의 작업에는 미니멀적이고 옵아트적인 형태와 동양의 윤회사상이 적절히 조화되어, 작업이란 하나하나 정성을 들이는 의식과도 같은 행위로 표현되어지고 있다. 프랭크 스텔라(Frank Stella, 1936- ), 도날드 저드(Donald Judd, 1928-1994 )와 같이 물성을 회복하기 위해 절제된 형태와 반복을 하는 것과는 달리 본인은 순환하고 있는 삶을 인식하여 다음 세상에서는 보다 나은 삶을 살아가고자 한 순간 순간에 정성을 들이며 띠의 색깔을 반복적으로 표현하였다. 이는 반복되어지는 형태와 색채를 통해 삶이 순환하고 있다는 것을 간접적으로 느낄 수 있게 하였다. 본인의 작업은 복제의 특성을 지닌 판화 작업과 회화 작업으로 표현되는데, 본인의 판화 작업에서는 부분적으로 한 화면에 존재하는 원이 반복적인 행위를 통해 전체적인 형태로 다시 태어난다. 또한 석판화 작업은 평면에서 반복되어지는 띠의 색깔로 인한 효과를 통해 마치 입체로 보여지는 듯한 착시 현상을 일으키게 하였다. 그러나 회화와 석판화를 거쳐 Paper Casting작업에 이르게 되면 평면에서 눈의 착각을 통해 입체로 보여지는 현상을 실제로 존재하는 입체로 확장시키고자 하였다. 회화 작업에서는 각기 다른 배경의 한 화면에 원이 존재한다. 이러한 원은 시각적 착시 현상을 유도하기 위해 단계적으로 계산되어진 띠의 반복으로 나타난다. 회화 작업에서는 판화 작업에서 볼 수 없는 물감의 우연적인 효과가 표현되어 원이 가진 속도감과 운동감을 느낄 수 있다. 이는 추상표현주의가 가진 우연성과 자발성의 특징을 보여주고 있다. 본 논문을 통해 본인은 시각적 형상이 존재하지 않는 윤회 사상을 원의 형태를 통해 드러내어 사상을 존재로서 이해하고자 하였다. 본인은 본 논문으로 인해 과학적으로 입증할 수 없고 눈으로 보여 지지 않는 사상이라 하더라도 그냥 지나칠 수 없으며, 바쁜 일상 속에서도 자신의 삶을 되돌아보고자 하는 계기가 되었으면 한다. 본 논문을 통해 지나온 시간에 대한 반성과 앞으로 작업에 있어 후회되지 않는 작업을 하려고 하는 계기를 마련하고자 한다.
