私的 신화를 통한 대중문화의 표현

Abstract

예술이란 무엇인가라는 물음에 대해 오늘날까지도 다양한 정의들 - 예를들면 예술은 모방이다. 예술은 표현이다. 예술은 의미있는 형식이다. 예술은 상징화된 감정이다. 등등 - 이 논의되고 있다. 그러나 현대예술작품에 있어서는 이와 같은 예술내적인 문제뿐만 아니라 그 외적인 관점 즉, 예술과 사회의 관련, 문화로서의 예술, 예술가와 수용자의 관계등이 함께 논의되고 있다. 그것은 현대 사회구조의 변화로 인한 다원화현상과 대중매체의 발달에 따른 문화 개념의 변질에서 기인한 것이다. 이전의 미술 양식이 하나의 절대적 가치에 근거를 둔 특정 양식으로 존재했던 것에 비하여 대중적이고 대량화된 현대 문화 속에서 예술작품은 이제까지의 모든 양식과 정신들이 동시에 공존하게 된다. 이것은 한층 더 복잡한 양상으로 나타나고 다원화된 미술의 특성을 보여주며 이러한 경향으로 접근하는 열린 태도를 보여주는 것이다. 따라서 이러한 태도는 개방된 대중문화의 영역안에서 현실을 체험하는 예술가에게 있어 신화나 다중 시점을 통한 자기투영으로 표현되어진다. 여기서 신화는 신화라는 단어적 의미가 아닌 구조적 의미작용을 말하는 것으로서, 표면적으로 드러나는 가시적, 물질적인 일차적 체계배면에 숨어 마치 존재하지 않는 것처럼 존재하는 이차적 체계, 다시 말해 상상체계를 가시화 시키는 것이다. 즉 일차체계에 대한 작가 개인의 독특한 반응은 다중시점으로 해석되며 이것은 작품에서 현실세계의 또 다른 이면으로 보여지는 것이다. 본인은 대중문화라고 하는 외적인 양상이 개인적 체험과 상상력이 함께 결합되어 표현되어 질 수 있는 비가시적인 세계를 작품을 통해 보여주고자 하였다. 이것은 현대의 대중문화 속에 이미 내포되어 있는 세계를 이끌어 내는 것이고 그 속에 본인의 관점이 포함되어 새로운 기호 체계를 이루게 되는 것이다. 이 기호 체계는 대중문화에 대한 본인의 해석과 그것을 또 다른 관점에서 해석하는 수용자의 상호 관계에 의해서 구성되는 것이며 작품의 또 다른 잠재적 가능성을 의미하는 것이다. 본인의 작업은 이같은 수용자와의 소통과 잠재력을 염두에 두고 대중문화라는 현실과 본인과의 존재방식을 물리적 흔적을 통하려 표현하고자 하였다. 그것은 회화라는 예술이 일차적 체계와 이차적 체계, 즉 물리적 세계와 비물질적 세계를 하나의 종합된 이미지로서 공존하는 것을 의미하는 것이다. 본 논문은 작품제작 논문으로서, 대중문화 속에서 체험하고 있는 본인 자신의 투영을 비가시적 이차체계인 신화적 구조와의 연결선상에서 살펴보고자 한다. 또한 그것을 표현하는 개인적 양식중 낙서라는 다의적 이미지를 가진 기호적 형상을 통하여 다양한 해석을 유도해 보고자 하며, 그 결과로서 생겨나는 새로운 이미지와 의미를 본인이 사용한 재료와 연관시켜 연구하고자 한다. 끝으로 본인의 작품을 제시 분석, 설명함으로써 지금까지의 작업에 대한 반성과 함께 앞으로의 전개 방향을 모색하는 계기로 삼고자 한다.;Until recently artists and critics have tried to define art in terms of its internal nature. For instance, there are diverse yet well-known definitions such as: art is an imitation, art is a manifestation, art is a form with a certain meaning etc. In modern art, however, factors external to an art work - a relationship between art and society, art as a form of culture, interactions between artists and public- are just as important as internal factors. This shift of the concept reflects the diversification of the society and the changes in the concept of culture at lange which reflects from the development of mass communication. In the past, an art work was based on a specific style which had absolute value over all other possible styles. In modern culture everything is mass produced for the general public, and an art work cannot help incorporating all styles and spirits past and present. Coexistence of many different style in modern art shows how complex and diverse the fine art has become, and how open the attitude of artists is toward the new trend. In a world where reality is defined by mass communication, this open attitude is often expressed through myths projected from multiple view points. Myths visualize the secondary world of imaginations, which may not be observable but surely exists behind the primary world of observable materials. Artist's personal reflections of the primary world are projected through multiple view points onto one's art work, and the work conveys a new translation of the reality My work tries to show a world of personal experience and imaginations which are invisible, but can be expressed through the form of mass culture. It contains elements of modern mass-culture which form a new system of symbols through a personal interpretation. This system of symbols, however, can be defined by interactions with viewers who may attach different meanings from those of the artists. Opening to, or inviting new interpretations by and communications with viewers, this work expresses the reality of mass-culture and personal existence. In this art work, the primary world of material and the secondary world of imaginations are both represented by a unified image. This thesis observes a personal self-image formed by the mass-culture. I am especially interested in how the image is linked with the secondary world of imaginations by structure of myths, and how a particular style, scribbling may invite diverse interpretations. This thesis will explain the new image created by the work and its relationships with the material used. After presenting and analyzing my works, I will try to explane possible ways of my future works.
