시각언어에 있어서 비유법의 문제

Abstract

본 연구는 디자인을 언어의 체계--시각언어--로 이해하기 위한 기본 이론을 정립하고, 그에 따른 시각적 비유법의 사용이 디자인에 있어서 어떠한 의미를 지니는가를 살피고자 한다. 이를 위하여 시각언어란 "내적인 구조를 가짐으로서 논리적인 해석이 가능한 시각적으로 표현된 실체"라는 가설을 설정하였다. 또한, 시각언어라는 용어가 사용될 수 있는 이론적 배경과 용어의 형성과정을 살피는 과정에서 시각언어는 일반언어학의 이론으로 접근하되 시각예술 자체의 특성을 간과하여서는 아니되는 특수한 주체임을 명확히 하였다. 디자인을 언어적으로 접근하면서, 본 연구가 집중하는 것은 시각적 비유법이다. 시각기호를 제작하는 디자이너의 디자인 활동은 시각적 비유법을 사용하면서 수행하는 자연스런 언어활동으로 볼 수 있다. 특히, 보이지 않는 개념을 실생활에서 친근하게 접할 수 있는 물체로 바꾸어 표현하는 환유법의 사용은 그러한 비유가 생성되는 배경--즉 표현하는 사람의 문화, 역사, 정치적 배경--을 구체적으로 드러낼 수 있다. 결과적으로, 시각언어에 있어서 환유의 사용은 개개인의 정체성 표방을 중시하는 후기구조주의적 사유방식의 일환으로 부상한다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 Web디자인을 대상으로 후기구조주의 언어관에서 중시하는 환유의 실제를 살펴보는 작업이 수행된다. 또한, 다양한 Web디자인의 경우를 비교분석하는 과정에서, 환유의 사용이 Web디자인의 속성상 메시지 전달과 정체성 표방 및 새로운 이미지의 창출에 유리한 것임을 확인하였다. 결론적으로, 본 연구에서는 후기구조주의의 사유방식에 의거한 환유개념을 디자인에 도입하는 것은 메시지 전달 및 정체성 표방이라는 면에서 긍정적인 의미가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 특히, web디자인 결과물에 비유법의 갈래를 적용함으로써, 시각언어라는 개념이 관념적인 것에 머무르지 않고, 실제 디자인개발 및 해독과정에서 유용하게 응용될 수 있다는 가능성을 밝히고자 하였다.;This study mainly constists of, first, constructing a basic theory for understanding Design as a linguistic structure-Visual Language-, and second, analizing figure of speech in the field of design. This study thus begins with a hypothesis that Visual Language is an independent entity which possesses such an intrinsic structure that enables a logical analysis of itself. Accordingly, this study clarifies the fact that Visual Language has proper characteristics because of which people should not simply equalize it to verbal langauge even in linguistic approach to it. As linguistically approaching to design, this study observes application of figure of speech to Web design. A designer's design activity, composed of various appropriation of figure of speech in Visual Language, appears as something that resembles his/her verbal language life. Language activity is a mental process which share the same process of figure of speech both in visual and verbal life. For example, metonymy is a figure of speech that represents some abstract: concept by switching it to daily stuff familiar to us. Thus, metonymy conveys background of the birth of a sign such as culture, history, politics surrounding the metonymic process. Consequently, metonymy emerges as a politically-correct figure of speech in post-constructionistic society. Thus, this study proceeded an observation of actual phases of metonymy in Web design. Through the observation, this study varifies the appropriation of metonymy in Web design plays an useful role in delivering messages and identities in a coherent way. Consequently, this study emphasizes that the appropriation of metonymy in design appears meaningful for the design field. Especially, this study suggests a possibility that the concept of Visual Language plays a useful role in the process of actual design activity as well as readers' decoding activity instead of its remaining merely conceptual.
