은율탈춤의 춤사위 분석 및 미의식 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 은율탈춤의 춤사위를 분석함으로써 그에 내포된 미적 내용과 그것을 창조해낼 수 있었던 우리 민족의 미의식을 밝혀 냄을 목적으로 한 것이다. 가면무용의 대표격인 탈춤은 그 연극적인 요소, 무용적인 요소, 음악적인 요소에 있어서 가장 잘 분화·발전한 분야이고, 농악 다음으로 전국성을 띄고 있는 민속극이자 민속무용이기 때문에 그 연구 가치는 대단히 높다 할 수 있다. 또한 탈춤은 민중들 삶의 모습과 예술의지가 투영되어 있는 하나의 집결체로서 민속무용의 근원적 미의식을 내재하고 있으며 무엇보다 한국적 정서를 잘 대변하고 있어 한국 춤의 원형적 가치를 탐구할 수 있는 중요한 주제라 할 수있다. 이러한 탈춤의 학문적 가치에도 불구하고 탈춤에 대한 연구는 많이 부족한 상태라 사료되어지며, 본 논문에서 다루게 될 은율탈춤은 여타 탈춤들보다도 늦게 문화재 지정이 되어 공연활동이나 선행 연구자료들의 부족으로 아직까지 이론적인 체계화가 이루어지지 못하고 있어 그 연구성과가 미흡한 실정이다. 춤의 발생근거이자 생성기반이라고 할 수 있는 전통적 행동양식과 자연적인 미의식이, 점차로 힘을 더해가는 현대물질 문명의 비자연적 사고방식과 서구적인 행동양식에 밀려 자칫 소멸되지나 않을까 하는 안타까움이 더해가는 지금, 탈춤에 대한 연구는 민속무용의 발생과 발달과정에 대한 연구이며 동시에 민속춤의 한 특성을 밝히고 우리 민속무용의 사관을 정립하는 토대가 되고 더 나아가서는 궁극적으로 한국인의 본원적인 미의식을 밝히는 것으로서 중요한 의의를 가진다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 전국적으로 산재해 있는 민속탈춤 중 비교적 춤의 원형이 잘 보존되어 있고, 내용면에 있어 민중적 미의식과 사회에 대한 풍자성이 강하게 나타나 있는 은율탈춤을 연구대상으로 삼고자 한다. 이에 대한 고찰은 첫째, 은율탈춤의 유래와 역사적 변천과정을 통해 그 속에 녹아있는 민족정서를 탐구해보고, 둘째, 실증적 입장에서 은율탈춤의 구성과 형식, 춤사위 등을 자세히 살핌으로써 은율탈춤의 무용적 가치를 재평가하고, 셋째, 이것을 토대로 하여 한국적인 미의식을 연구하는데 의의가 있다고 하겠다. 위 세가지의 고찰 의의 중 연구자가 가장 중점을 둔 것은 세 번째의 은율탈춤에 내재된 미의식에 관한 연구로서, 그 미의식의 내용은 미적 정서로서의 신명과 자연순응, 미적 세계관의 민중성·제의성·상징성이며 그러한 미의식과 정서를 밝힘으로써 은율탈춤을 통해 탈춤 전반의 미의식에 대하여 고찰하였다. 이러한 목적과 방법에 의해 연구한 것을 종합한 결론을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 우리민족의 고유한 미의식의 하나인 신명은 민중적인 생활표현을 위한 예술적 원천으로 공동체적 결속으로 민중들을 한데 묶음으로써 주체의식을 형성하게 만들었으며 자연순응의 정서는 한국인의 성격을 만들어 나갔고, 모든 예술활동에 있어서 또는 생활에 있어서 자연에 위배되지 않고 그것과 조화를 이루며 자연의 일부분으로 살아가는 삶의 방법을 습득하게 하였다. 둘째, 민중은 민족문화의 핵심으로써 공동사회에서의 질서를 추구하려는 의식들이 공동체적 동질성을 공유하여 미의식을 형성해 나갔는데, 이것은 일시에 이루어진 것이 아니라 오랜 역사적 흐름 속에서 자연스럽게 이루어져 왔다. 또한 이렇게 형성된 집단적 미의식은 민중들에게 민중성과 제의성·상징성의 세계관을 형성하게 하였으며 우리 춤의 표현에 있어 정중동의 미·곡선의 미·풍자미를 만들어 나갔다. 셋째, 탈춤의 근원에는 한국인 특유의 미의식, 즉 민중의 생활표현의 정서, 세계관, 아름다움에 대한 표현 등이 깊이 내재되어 있으며 그것은 시대가 변천하는 과정 속에서 그 외형이 변화는 되었지만 근본은 변모되지 않은 채 우리춤의 정신으로 이어져 왔다. 넷째, 춤 정신이 올바르게 계승되어 우리 민속춤에 정통성을 부여하고, 창작 춤의 가치가 바로서기 위해서는 정통적 미의식에 대한 고찰이 현대 한국무용에 있어 전제되어야 할 필수불가결한 과제이며, 더 나아가 한국인의 미의식을 밝히는 것과 동시에 우리 민속 무용의 사관을 정립하는데 중요한 토대가 된다. 마지막으로, 우리의 탈춤이 세계무대에서도 인정받기 위해서는 미의식의 이론적 체계를 갖추어야 하며, 거듭된 발전이 이루어질 수 있기 위해 이에 관련된 모든 분야에서 세계화를 위한 다각적인 연구가 이루어져야 한다.;This research is to analyze the dance movements of Eunyul Talch'um (Eunyul Mask Dance); thereby study its aesthetic contents and the Korean aesthetic consciousness that enabled the creation of such dances. Talch'um, which is an exemplary form of mask dance, is the most developed and specified form of dance in theatrical, dance-related and musical aspects. Also, since Talch'um is a form of folk drama or folk dance that is popular throughout the whole country, with its popularity coming next only to Nongak(the instrumental music of peasants), researches on this issue are of immense value. Furthermore, as a projection of everyday lives and artistic intensions of the populace, Talch'um connotes the fundamental aesthetic consciousness of the Folk dance. Above all, as Talch'um best represents the Korean sentiment, it is of great importance in studying the prototypical value of the Korean dance. However, despite its scholarly value, not enough researches on Talch'um had been conducted. Moreover, Eunyul Talch'um, which will be the topic of this paper, was designated as an intangible cultural properties later than other Talch'ums. Due to lack of performances and insufficient precedented researches, it has not yet been theoretically systemized, therefore resulting in unsatisfactory research outcomes. Currently, as the modern material civilization's unnatural ways of thinking and Western behavioral patterns are outgrowing the traditional behavioral patterns and natural aesthetic consciousness- which are the basis of the origin and the production of folk dances, many concerns lest our tradition should perish. The research on Talch'um is at the same time a research on the origin and the development of the folk dance, which contributes on investigating the characteristics of folk dances and serves as the basis in establishing a historical view on Korean folk dance. Furthermore, the importance of such researches lies in the fact that they would ultimately reveal the root of the Korean aesthetic consciousness. Under such circumstances, this paper will focus on Eunyul Talch'um, of which the prototype is relatively well preserved among the many folk dances distributed throughout the country, and in which the aesthetic consciousness of the populace and the sarcasm on the society are strongly expressed. First, this paper will inquire into the Korean sentiment by looking at the origin of Eunyul Talch'um and the series of changes it went through throughout the history; second, specifically investigate the structure, the form and the movements of Eunyul Talch'um, thereby reassess the value of Eunyul Talch'um as a form of dance; third, on the foundation of above studies, thoroughly investigate the Korean aesthetic consciousness. Among the three aspects of consideration, special focus will be on the third aspect- an investigation of aesthetic consciousness expressed in Eunyul Talch'um. The contents of aesthetic consciousness suggest and symbolize 'Shinmyeong'(It means the condition that people plays very delightfully); as an aesthetic sentiment, adaptation to the nature and popularity of the aesthetic outlook on the world. And by conducting a research on aesthetic consciousness and sentiment, the dissertation was able to find out about the general aesthetic consciousness of Talch'um through the study of Eunyul Talch'um. The conclusion of the research conducted according to such goals and methods could be summarized as the following. First, Shinmyeong is one of the unique Korean aesthetic sentiments, which serves as an artistic source in expressing the everyday lives of the populace, which drew all people together thereby formulating a sense of subjectivity. The tendency to adapt to the nature formulated the characteristics of the Koreans, and allowed them to live as a part of the nature, in harmony, instead of violating the rules of nature, in all artistic activities and in their livelihoods. Second, as the core of the national culture, the populace tended to establish order in the public society. During that process people came to share homogeneity in formulating aesthetic consciousness; such was accomplished naturally along with the flow of the history. Moreover, the collective aesthetic consciousness that was formed according to this trend contributed in people's formulation of popular, suggestive and symbolical view on the world, which was extended to the creation of the beauty of movement within stillness and the art of satire. Third, at the root of Talch'um lies the unique Korean aesthetic consciousness, which refers to the manifestation of the people's feelings towards their lives, of the views on the world and of beauty. Despite the external changes that occurred during the course of time, its foundation has been left intact, still living in our spirit of dance. Fourth, in order for the spirit of dance to be rightly inherited to vest orthodoxy to our folk dance and to bestow value on created dance, consideration of orthodox aesthetic consciousness should be the premise for modern Korean dance; furthermore, not only does such consideration provide information on Korean people's aesthetic consciousness, it also serves as the basis in establishing the tradition of our folk dance. Lastly, in order for our folk dance to be acknowledged in the world stage, the aesthetic consciousness should be theoretically systemized. Also, for further development, diversified researches should be conducted in all related areas in order to promote the Korean aesthetic consciousness worldwide.
