인물 묘사를 통한 인간의 소외의식 표현

Abstract

예술이 진정한 자기 자신을 발견하고 또 그것을 표현해내기 위한 작업이라면, 무엇보다도 인간을 진실한 눈으로 바라보는 자세가 필요하다고 생각한다. 본인은 현대인이 처한 다양한 정신적 상황 속에서 본인 자신이 갖고 있는 또 다른 자아상(自我像)을 발견할 수 있었으며, 그러한 감정을 자화상을 포함한 인물의 형상으로 표현해 보고자 하였다. 이러한 작품 제작의 배경에는 인간의 정서적인 측면에 비해 훨씬 다른 속도로 발달한 물질 문명으로 인하여 정신과 물질의 조화가 불균형을 이룸으로써 발생한 인간소외 현상과, 그에 대한 극복 의지가 밑바탕이 되어 왔다고 할 수 있다. 현대인들은 물질적 풍요로움 속에서 인간 본연의 주체성과 정신적 가치의 중요성을 점차 망각해가고 있으며, 그리하여 익명의 군중인 타인으로부터, 또 자기 자신의 진정한 자아(自我)로부터 소외되는 체험을 하게 된다. 겉으로는 내색하지 않고 당당한 듯 자신있게 살아가지만 각자의 마음 깊숙한 곳에는 타인에 대한 불신과 부조리한 사회에 대한 저항감, 그리고 자기 자신에 대한 연민과 열등감, 그러나 그 속에서 소외되지 않고 어울려 살아남고자 하는 욕구와 의지 등이 혼재되어, 일관성 있는 자아를 유지하지 못하고 이중 · 삼중의 인격을 지닌 채 살아가고 있는 것이다. 본인의 작업은 이러한 인간에 대한 관심, 삶 속에서 일상적으로 느끼게 되는 여러 가지 감정들을 안고 살아가는 현대인들의 내면 정서에 대한 관심에 서부터 출발하였다. 그러한 의미에서 '자화상'이란 소재는 작업을 하는 화가 자신의 자의식과 그의 삶, 그리고 내적인 심리상태까지도 그대로 화면 위에 응축하여 나타낼 수 있다는 점에서 일반 인물화들보다 인간이 갖고 있는 정서를 표현하는데 가장 효과적이고 적합한 소재라고 생각한다. 본인은 작품 제작에 있어 이러한 자화상 특유의 장점들을 염두에 두고 내면의 자아를 찾아 표현하기 위한 작업에 진지한 노력을 기울여 왔다. 그를 위한 인물의 표현 방법으로는 전통적인 동양의 초상화 기법을 바탕으로 하여, 세필을 이용한 섬세하고 사실적인 묘사를 주로 사용하였다. 또한 다양한 의미를 함축하고 있는 여백과 수묵의 미를 화면 위에 표출하여, 본인의 내면 심리를 더욱 극대화하여 표현하고자 하였다. 모든 색채의 가장 태극(太極)의 색인 음양만이 존재하는 수묵은 그 고유의 은은한 아름다움 뿐 아니라 수묵의 정신적 특성의 하나인 고도의 절제와 내면적 정신성의 추구에서 그 본질을 찾을 수 있다. 본인은 이러한 수묵의 상징성과 발묵 효과를 이용하여 인간의 다양하고 복잡한 내면 심리를 나타내어 보고자 하였다. 또한 본인 작품에서 커다란 비중을 차지하는 여백의 효과를 최대한 살려, 인간의 소외의식을 나타내기 위한 공허하고 비현실적인 공간을 만들어 보았다. 각각의 작품 안에서 여백은 현대인의 공허하고 무방비 상태의 내면 심리와 현실과 동떨어진 비현실적인 공간, 그리고 인간과 인간 혹은 자기 자신과의 심리적인 거리 등으로 이해하여 볼 수 있다. 인물의 묘사 방법에 있어서는, 작품 속 인물들의 보다 생생한 표정 묘사를 위하여 전통적인 중봉에 의한 필선과 빛에 의한 명암 표현을 함께 사용하여 사실감을 더해 주고자 하였다. 그러나 사실적인 인물의 형상을 화면에 표현할 경우, 인물에서 보여지는 일반적인 형태의 묘사보다는 인물의 형상에서 느껴지는 정서와 자신의 의지를 조화시켜 나갈 수 있어야 진정한 형상의 묘사를 얻었다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 본인은 회화 작품이 언어로 표현해내기 어려운 진실을 더욱 직접적으로 느낄 수 있도록 해 준다고 생각한다. 말로써 논하기 힘든 인간의 본질을, 한 인간의 복잡한 내면 세계를 논리적 인식이 아닌 감성적 인식으로 파악할 수 있도록 도와주는 것이다. 이번 논문을 통하여 본인의 작업에 대해 다시 한 번 진지하게 되짚어보고, 앞으로의 작업에 대한 방향과 새로운 표현 기법에 대해서도 생각해 볼 수 있는 계기가 되었으면 하는 바램이다.;If art is a process to find and express oneself, one needs to look at humans with a truthful eye. I have found another self-image of myself in the various mental states we modern people were in, and I have tried to express those feelings in human form including that of a self-portrait. Behind the creation of these works lie the unbalance between spiritual and material growth that causes isolation and the desire to overcome such. Modern men are forgetting the importance of the independence of human nature and value of spirituality amidst the abundance of material goods and thus experience isolation from anonymous others belonging to the masses, and from their true selves. Despite living confidently without acknowledging the problem, deep inside they harbor distrust towards others, resistance to the irrational society, as well as self-pity, inferiority complex, and the desire to fit in and survive. These feelings are mixed creating numerous personalities to be used In various situations. My work stems from the interest toward people, interest toward people who live with various conflicting feelings everyday. That is why I think the subject of self-portrait has an advantage over other paintings of people in that it expresses the self-consciousness of the painter, painters life, and feelings that are buried deep inside onto the canvas. I have kept those advantages in mind and have made a conscious effort in expressing the self beneath. For the expression of persons I have used the traditional methods of eastern portraits, using fine brush to depict detail and reality. Also, I have used emptiness and the beauty of water and ink that depicts various states of mind to amplify my inner feelings. Water and ink where only the extremities of colors (black and white) exist can be interpreted as having extreme self control, inner spirituality, while at the same time having beauty that does not overly stand out. I have focused on these impressions of water and ink as well as visual effects to express varying and complicated state of peoples inner state. Also to emphasize the effects of emptiness that play a big part in my works, I have made unrealistic and empty space in order to express isolation. Empty space in each of the works can be interpreted as the defenseless inner state of modern people, the distance between humans or the psychological distance within oneself. In describing people, I have combined the use of traditional middle brush lines, light and shadow for more realistic description of facial expression and reality. However, when expressing reality on canvas, true description of form comes from the balance between your desires and impressions rather than that of expressing features. I feel that paintings help see truth that cannot be expressed easily with words. Human nature, the complicated inner world of humans are hard to put into words can be understood via intuitive feelings rather than rationale. I hope that this thesis provides another serious look at my works, help me decide which direction to take when creating new works, and provide an opportunity to ponder new methods of expression.
