치유를 위한 해학적 이상 공간

Abstract

The word, an ideal space, literally, refers to the place that does not exist in reality. However, it is considered as the most perfect place within the limit of one’s imagination. Even though it is perhaps impossible to experience the ideal place directly, the place provides people with the possibility of indirect experience through imagination and clues to get rid of spiritual pain via vicarious satisfaction. An ideal space sometimes neglects the limitation of reality but it also participates in solving the real world problems with its will to reform those. Although there are various different patterns of ideal spaces, these patterns have a common denominator that the origin of an ideal space has an inseparable relation with reality. Pursuing an ideal space acts a role as a medium in those such as recognizing irregularities of reality, desiring ‘something complete and ideal’ that the reality has missed, and gauging possibilities of realization of this ‘completeness’ in the next generation. These works have been set up on an intention to express ‘an ideal space for healing’ and tried to visualize an imaginative space where the mental agony of contemporaries can be relieved. I think such feelings as compulsion, alienation, and insecurity that the majority confronts, originate from the loss of one’s own existential value as their existence is adjudicated under the name of ‘the logic of power’. These works have tried to suggest an alternative plan; the space in which possibilities for overcoming inner discomfort caused by irregularities and recovering wounded relationship based upon equal and universal value. Once the space is expressed by paintings, the meaning of space is extended from simple fictitiousness to active experience with sympathy. This kind of attempt is able to be a catalyst for solving problems. Furthermore, this attempt can be fuel positively. As for the visualization of an imaginary space, two elements were used; the place where the action of healing is accomplished metaphorically, and the hypothetical existence who helps the action. This space is entangled with various symbols revealing the theme and this has a thread of connection with Yijing(elevated aesthetic state), the distinctive feature of oriental feature of oriental paintings. Moreover, it has been chosen the method of humorous healing, not a serious method of healing. Each independent space forms a unified and unfolded narrative organically piled up one on another. It is discussed how to visualize the ideal space in these works after looking through visualized ideal spaces expressed by other artists. Those ideal spaces by others were categorized into three spaces; a religious ideal space, a transcending realistic space and a space where reality and an ideal coexist. I believe that these works serve as a momentum to assign solider theoretical evidence to an ideal space that could have remained as a simple imagination. Furthermore, it was able to discover the possibility of an ideal space. An ideal space expressed through these works is able to communicate with the present time surrounding ‘me’ and ‘us’ based upon its own power of the formative arts, rather than being locked in a simple two-dimensional plane. To conclude, it is expected that these works become a small but stable foundation which will breathe with contemporaneity and arouse its own social meaning and sincere sympathy.;이상 공간(理想 空間)은 단어가 드러내는 그대로, 현실 세계에는 존재하지 않지만 생각할 수 있는 범위 내에서 가장 완전하다고 여겨지는 공간을 의미한다. 직접 체험은 불가능하지만 상상을 통한 간접 경험의 가능성과 대리만족을 통한 정신적 고통 해소의 실마리를 제공하는 공간이다. 이상 공간들의 태도는 현실이 가진 한계를 외면하기도 하고 적극적으로 현실 문제에 참여하고 이를 개혁하려는 의지를 지니기도 한다. 그 유형의 다양함에도 불구하고 이상 공간의 발생 근원은 현실과 불가분의 관계를 지닌다는 공통분모를 가지고 있다. 이상 공간 추구는 부조리한 현실 문제를 인식하고 나아가 현실이 놓치고 잃어버린 ‘완전한 -이상적인- 무엇’을 희구하고 다음 세대에서의 현실화 가능성을 타진하는 중간 역 역할을 한다. 본인은 ‘치유를 위한 이상 공간’을 설정하고 동시대인들의 정신적 상처를 치유할 수 있는 상상 공간을 시각화하였다. 대다수가 겪고 있는 강박감과 소외 그리고 불안감은 힘의 논리로 이루어지는 존재 평가에 의한 고유의 실존적 가치 상실에서 비롯된다. 본인은 이에 대한 대안으로 부조리로 인한 내적 부자유 극복과 평등하고 보편적인 가치를 바탕으로 한 정상적 관계 회복이 가능한 공간을 제시하고자 하였다. 회화로 표현된 이상 공간은 단순한 허구 공간이 가지는 한계를 넘어 공감을 통한 적극적 체험으로 확장되며 이러한 시도는 문제 해소의 촉매제가, 나아가 적극적으로는 연료가 될 수 있다. 형상화 방법으로는 치유를 은유하는 행위가 이루어지는 가상의 장소와 행위를 돕는 가상의 존재를 설정하였다. 그리고 이 공간은 주제를 드러내는 다양한 상징들로 엮여 있으며 이는 동양 회화의 특징인 의경(意境)과 일맥상통한다. 또 ‘심각한’ 방식의 치유가 아닌 해학적 치유의 방식을 택하였으며 개개의 독립 공간들은 각각의 이야기를 가지고 유기적으로 중첩되어 통합된 전체, 하나의 펼쳐진 이야기를 이룬다. 형상화된 이상공간에 대해서는 이전 작가들에 의해 표현되었던 이상 공간 유형들을 ‘종교적 이상 공간’, ‘현실 초월적 이상 공간’, ‘현실과 이상이 공존하는 공간’으로 나누어 작품을 중심으로 살펴본 후, 본인의 작업에서의 이상 공간 형상화 방법론을 논의하였다. 본 연구로 본인은 단순한 공상으로 그칠 수 있는 이상 공간에 보다 확고한 이론적 근거를 부여할 수 있는 계기를 마련하였다. 또 이를 바탕으로 본인이 표현한 이상 공간이 평면 속에 갇힌 이야기가 아니라 조형 예술이 가진 고유의 힘을 바탕으로 ‘나와 우리를 둘러싼 현재’와 소통할 수 있는 가능성을 내재하고 있음을 발견하게 되었다. 본 연구가 동시대와 함께 생생한 호흡을 하고, 사회 속에서 고유의 의의를 가지고 진정성 어린 동감을 불러일으키는 작업을 모색하고자 하는 본인에게 작지만 단단한 초석이 되기를 기대한다.
