시선으로 통하는 타자와 자아

Abstract

This study was attempted to examine closely and to express the general phenomenon of an ego and others through personal experiences. The existence of others who inevitably surrounded by me in every instance is a sufficient condition to recognize the identity of ego. I recognize others and pay attention to the concept of 'gaze' as a medium that responds towards them and I am interested in how the gaze functions among each other. The relations with others connected with the gaze have something to do with the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty, a body-oriented phenomenologist. Meanwhile, according to him, the body perceives each other so that it can form relations and exchange directly with the world. I respond to the outer world through the body and try to find out my own identity through my own visual code. Such inner psychological responses to others were expressed mainly by photographies or media and much attention has been paid to revealing ambiguous double psychological phenomenon at the time of being gazed within the relationship between subject to object. In order to help one understand such an attempt, the position of the researcher of this study was deduced through the works of several artists including Vito Acconci who would use his body as a tool to investigate the ego and communicate with the external world. Meanwhile, this study was attempted to deal with the doubtful attitudes towards the behavior of 'to see' as a response to others. 'To see' means that certain membranes such as a stereotype derived from the ideology and knowledge of the subject who sees were formed already; therefore, it is merely a superficial image for us to recognize each other. In this regard, one tends to have an attitude to communicate through mutual recognition with an attempt to see sincere being myself, and a sense of uneasiness and skepticism within it are represented as the concept of a skin and clothes, respectively. In terms of investigating the phenomenon, with which one has no choice but to rely upon the images recognized by others, this study explicated the concept of stereotype through the works of Cindy Sherman and Barbara Kruger and attempted to understand the formation of the concept of the researcher of this study. At the last chapter, this study analyzed my works through the formative methodology based on the theoretical background on what the others would be, how the relationship between the ego and others was formed and what the ego attempted to pursue in it. Despite the works were connected with one concept derived from the one concept, they could be classified into three in terms of expressive methods. This study was aimed to recognize others who always exist around me as a gaze and to observe psychological phenomena which are formed between others and an ego in such daily basis so that I can solve them in my own way. Through this research, I could regard the ego represented in responses towards to others, the ego recognized by others and the ego as an object when being looked at by myself, eventually this was important start to discover the true nature of mine. Annemarie Gethmann-Seifert said as below: "Art is defined as an intuitional form of kind of specific world recognition in human cognizance.” It has been assumed that an artist had to look at and explore in a non-universal perspective the phenomena that ordinary people overlooked and to gradually recognize the external world in this way. I investigated the established order and phenomena of the world based on the experimental and active attitudes with new perspectives of an artist.;이 연구는 개인적인 경험을 통해 자아와 타자라는 일반적인 현상을 주의 깊게 관찰하여 시각적으로 나타내고자 한 시도이다. 매순간 필연적으로 내 주변을 둘러싸고 있는 타인의 존재는 자아의 정체를 인식하기에 충분한 조건이 된다. 나는 타인을 인식하고 그것을 향해 반응하는 매개체로서 시선이라는 개념에 주목하여, 그 시선이 서로에게 어떤 작용을 하는지에 대한 관심을 가지게 된다. 시선으로 연결된 타자와의 관계는 몸의 현상학자인 메를로 퐁티(Maurice Merleau-Ponty)의 철학과 연관을 가지고 있으며, 그에 따르면 몸은 서로를 지각하여 관계를 형성하고, 세계와 직접적으로 교류할 수 있는 방식이다. 나는 신체를 통해 외부세계 즉 타자에 반응하고, 자신만의 시각적인 코드를 만들어 표현하며 그것을 통해 정체성을 찾고자 하였다. 타자를 향한 내면의 심리반응은 사진이나 영상매체로 주로 표현되었으며, 주체와 객체라는 관계 안에서 바라보여질 때의 모호한 이중적 심리 현상을 드러내는데 중점을 두었다. 뿐만 아니라 카메라와의 피드백 구조 속에서 자신의 반영 이미지를 바라보는 주체의 심리 작용을 연구하였다. 이러한 시도에 대한 이해를 돕기 위해, 자신의 신체를 도구로 삼아 자아를 탐구하고 외부와 소통하려 하였던 비토 아콘치(Vito Acconci)를 비롯한 몇몇 작가들의 작품을 통해 나의 입장을 도출해 보았다. 한편 타자에 대한 다른 하나의 반응으로서 ‘보다’라는 행위에 대한 회의적인 태도를 다루고자 하였다. 본다는 것은 보는 주체의 관념과 지식 등에서 비롯된 고정관념이라는 일종의 막이 형성되어 있음을 뜻하며, 결국 우리가 서로를 인식하는 것은 단지 표면적인 이미지에 불과하다. 진정한 나의 모습을 바라보려는 시도와 함께 상호 간의 인식을 통해 소통하고자하는 태도를 취하게 되고, 그 안에서의 불안함과 회의감은 껍질과 옷이라는 개념으로서 표현된다. 우리가 불가피하게 타인으로부터 인식된 이미지에 의존할 수밖에 없는 현상을 살펴보는 데에 있어서, 스테레오타입이라는 개념을 신디 셔먼(Cindy Sherman)과 바바라 크루거(Barbara Kruger)의 작품을 통해 설명하고, 나의 개념 형성에 대한 이해를 도모하고자 하였다. 마지막 장에서는 타자란 무엇이며, 자아와 타자의 관계가 어떻게 형성되고 그 속에서 자아는 무엇을 추구하는가에 대한 이론적 배경을 토대로, 조형적 방법론을 통해 나의 작품들을 분석하였다. 작품들은 동일한 개념에서 비롯되었으나, 표현방법에 따라서 세 가지 맥락으로 분류, 설명되었다. 이 논문은 주변에 늘 존재하는 타자를 시선으로서 인식하고, 일상에서 겪는 경험 안에서 타자와 나 사이에 형성되는 심리 현상을 관찰하여 자신만의 독특한 방식으로 풀어나가려 하는 데에 목적이 있다. 이 연구를 통하여 타자에 대한 반응 안에서 나타나는 자아의 모습과 타자의 지각세계에 의해 인식되는 자아, 그것을 다시 바라볼 때의 객체로서의 자아의 모습을 깊이 있게 바라보게 되었고, 이것은 자신의 진정한 본질을 발견해 나가는 중요한 출발점이 되었다. “예술은 인간의 인식에서 일종의 특수한 세계 인식의 직관적 형식으로서 규정된다.”라고 게트만 지페르트(Annemarie Gethmann-Seifert)는 말하였다. 우리가 무심코 지나치고 있는 현상들을 결코 보편적이지 않은 관점으로 바라보고 탐구하며, 또 이러한 방식으로 외부세계를 점차적으로 인식해 나가는 것이 예술가라고 본다. 나는 보다 새로운 시각을 가지고 실험하는 예술가의 적극적인 자세를 기본으로 세계의 이미 정립된 질서와 현상을 연구하고자 하였다.
