사물을 통한 개인적 기억의 표현

Abstract

This study views reflecting on oneself using memory as a medium as a clue to finding the original image of the ego, and it aims at expressing personal memory through objects with symbolic meanings. Memories which become motifs for art pieces are examined as theoretical backgrounds of the study and an artwork world is formed, based on one’s own personal memories, and artists who have expressed these as pieces have been observed with focus. Also, it was observed that objects which have been visualized in art have meanings which transcend conventional meanings and become existences with meanings on two faces. In developing the work, to observe the inner problems which have become the root of the desire for self-reflection and a motive for research, some memories from childhood are realized again with emotions like that of the past through self-analysis of psycho-analysis, and objects which symbolize childhood and experiences in life in the present are produced through methods of cutting and polishing wood. Also, the present study explains that one’s self can be understood and can feel psychologically stable through the meanings of the objects and through work processes. Dyeing trees are observed from an aspect that memory doesn’t have a fixed status and that when present interpretive viewpoints and events are reiterated, meaning and influence are able to change, and effects that are gained by transcribing personal records to the surface were observed. Piece analysis results of the seven pieces presented through this study are as follows. The process of recreating an object in which my emotions are projected recalls memories that are connected with certain objects, allowing those memories to be focused on, and as time went by, the shock of first facing the problem became dull and alleviated and became replaced with a relaxed state of mind as reflection and work processes were repeated. The point that remembering and organizing memories, as a part of the work, does not take place in a short period of time, but like trimming trees, requires a long period of time, along with the point that the expressive method of dying can be accommodated, made wood appropriate as piece material due to its characteristic properties of matter and feeling. This study expressed personal memories by reproducing objects using wood as material. Objects in the piece, without relation to original purposes of use, connote various emotions within experience such as loneliness, fear, anxiety, and yearning, along with stories connected with these emotions and they played the role of mediating in the display of memory. After polishing was completed, the density in the surface of the annual rings were varied and dyed several times and this was to express the tracks left by events of the past as stains which act like marks. The work of transcribing text is the last stage of organizing inner problems. By editing and transcribing records which speak for a rotating life on the surface, parts of the inner world which had been suppressed become reconstructed. This signifies that emotional adherences which had confused me have become loose and the inner world and outer world have become connected. Reflecting on problems which caused instability to form in the inner world through personal memories aided me in finding my own identity. The exploration of ego through memories and work which is created through this organizes inner adherence and confusion which have been suppressed within the unconsciousness, aiding in the dissolving of emotional pain, and acts of pursuing the tracks and marks of my inner world provide an opportunity to ruminate how the outer world which surrounds me is understood. This did not cease to be momentary self-reflection but it was effective in deeply appreciating inner memories and their meanings, as an ascetic works for long periods of time to smoothen wooden figures, and became an opportunity to meet a more sophisticated ego.;본 연구는 개인적 기억 속에서 상징적 의미를 지니는 특정 사물의 재현을 통해 자기치유의 계기로 삼는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구의 이론적인 배경으로 예술작품의 모티브가 되는 기억을 고찰하고 자신의 개인적인 기억을 토대로 작품세계를 형성하며 이를 작품으로 표현한 작가를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 또 예술 속에서의 시각화된 사물이 보편적인 개념을 넘어서 그 이면에 의미를 가지는 존재임을 알아보았다. 작업을 전개함에 있어 연구의 동기이자 스스로를 성찰하고자 하는 근원이 된 내면의 문제를 살펴보기위해 유년기의 기억 중 일부를 정신분석학의 자아분석을 통해 과거와 같은 정서로 재인식하고 현재 속에서 어린시절과 삶 속의 경험을 상징하는 대상물들을 깎고 연마하는 방식으로 제작하였다. 또, 본 연구에서 사물이 가지는 의미와 작업을 통해 스스로를 이해하고 심리적으로 안정감을 느낄 수 있게 됨을 설명하였다. 나무에 물들이기의 의미는 기억이 해석관점과 사건들의 중첩으로 변화할 수 있다는 측면에서 살펴보고 표면에 개인적인 기록물을 전사하여 얻을 수 있는 효과에 대해 알아보았다. 본 연구에서는 개인적 기억 속의 사물들을 나무라는 소재로 재현하였다. 작품 속 사물들은 본래의 용도와는 상관없이 외로움, 불안, 그리움 등과 같은 경험 속의 여러 가지 정서, 그와 관련된 이야기를 내포하고 있다. 작업의 일부인 기억을 떠올려 보고 정리하는 행위는 단기간에 이루어지는 것이 아니라 나무를 다듬는 일과 같이 긴 시간을 필요로 한다는 점, 물들이기라는 표현의 방법이 수용될 수 있다는 점과 더불어 그 고유한 물성과 느낌으로 인해 나무는 작품의 소재로서 적합하였다. 나이테가 드러나 있는 표면에 농도를 달리하여 여러 번에 걸쳐 물들이기한 것은 과거 사건의 궤적들을 흔적과 같은 얼룩들로 표현하기 위함이다. 텍스트를 전사하는 작업은 자전적 삶을 대변하는 기록물들을 표면에 편집하여 전사함으로써 억압되었던 내면의 부분들을 재구성하고 나에게 혼란을 주었던 정서적 고착이 풀려 내면과 외부세계가 연결됨을 의미한다. 기억을 통한 자아의 탐구와 이를 통한 작업은 무의식 속에 억압되었던 내면의 고착과 혼란을 정리하여 정서적 통증의 해소에 도움을 주었으며 내 속에서의 발자취, 흔적을 추적하는 행위는 나를 둘러싼 외부세계를 어떻게 이해하고 있었는지 반추해 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 그것은 일시적인 성찰에 그치지 않고 마치 수행자가 오랜 시간동안 목상을 다듬는 행위처럼 내면의 기억과 그 의미를 깊이 음미하는데 효과적이었으며 보다 성숙한 자아를 만나게 되는 기회가 되었다.
