죽음의 이미지가 투영된 공간 표현 연구

Abstract

Death is unavoidable: it is not antonym to 'life' but coexists with 'life' like two faces of a coin. However, we may chose our perception in death as to whether we face it or ignore it. Further, our perception towards 'life' will be influenced by such perception in death. This study has been conducted with an intention to make readers to recapture their lives by experiencing confrontation of death that has been reproduced with psychological space representing vulnerability of their being in connection with death. The theme of this study is thereby weighed on giving tentative form of death in order for them to re-awaken meaning of life. In this respect, this study deals with a group of artists whose works are based on confrontation of death as well as another group of artists whose works are related to an empirical scenery, and lives of such artists themselves. With respect to substance of expression, avoidance leads only to tentative comfort but confrontation alone delivers one from ultimate anxiety causing from death has been noted. In order to reproduce agitating image of death in visible form, aged and rotten wooden board has been used as a primary material, further, some other secondary materials have also been integrated to supplement the intention of the artist so that viewers may be able to experience of the work. The analysis has been made with a view to theocratical backgrounds and its expression method with regards to 7 pieces of art works being constructed on the foregoing grounds and a scenery integrated by such 7 individual pieces of works. This study may be deemed to achieve its primary purpose if one can have an opportunity to rediscover death, although she may be unable to have hand-on experience, that has been marginalised in one's understanding until then and broaden her understanding of the world surrounding her being.;죽음이란 선택할 수 없는 것으로 삶의 반대말이 아니라 삶과 공존하는 것이다. 그러나 우리는 죽음에 대해 그것을 망각할 것인지 직시할 것인가 하는 인식의 태도는 선택할 수 있다. 그리고 그 선택은 삶의 태도에 많은 영향을 끼치게 된다. 본 논문의 연구목적은 죽음으로부터 도피하지 않고 접근하는 태도로써 삶의 의미를 재발견할 수 있다는 관점에서, 죽음의 이미지가 현실 공간에 투영된 모습을 형상화하는데 두었다. 연구의 내용은 이론적 배경에서 먼저 죽음에 대한 의학적, 철학적, 종교적 의미를 알아본 뒤, 죽음을 직시하는 입장에서 작품세계를 펼친 작가들과, 전체 공간을 아우르는 설치를 통해 체험적인 공간을 다룬 작가들의 작업에 대해 알아보았다. 표현 내용에서는 죽음을 망각하고 회피하려는 태도는 일시적인 위안을 줄뿐이고, 죽음을 직시하는 태도만이 죽음으로 인한 존재의 불안감에서 진정으로 벗어나게 할 수 있다는 것을 서술하였다. 표현 방법에서는 죽음의 불안한 이미지가 현실세계에 투영되도록 주재료로 썩고 낡은 합판과 시멘트를 사용하였고, 철사와 면 테이프 등 제작과정 중에 쓰인 재료들을 일부 드러나도록 하였으며, 이를 관객이 체험하는데 용이하도록 총체적으로 설치하였음을 서술하였다. 작품 분석에서는 이러한 내용을 바탕으로 표현한 7점과 그 7점이 이루는 하나의 풍경을 이론적 배경과 표현 내용 및 방법에 근거하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과로는 재료 면에서, 폐목을 이용한 소조기법으로 구체적인 형상을 표현하였고, 재료 표면 자체에서 죽음의 불안하고 음산한 이미지를 드러내게 하였다. 또한 석고와 혼합한 시멘트에 여러 가지 효과를 사용하여 자연스러운 세월의 효과와 서정적인 느낌을 형상화하였으며, 정제된 흰색 설탕을 사용하여 순수하고 완전한 세계로 설정된 사후세계를 표현하였다. 형태 면에서는 한 쪽 팔이 없는 인체, 막힌 길, 열수 없는 문, 오를 수 없는 계단, 부서진 벽 등 본래의 형태와 기능을 상실시킴으로써 불완전한 현실 세계를 나타내도록 하였다. 설치 면에서는 하나의 환경을 이루는 전체구성으로 삶과 죽음이 한 공간에 공존하고 있음을 표현하였다. 특히, 일상 공간 중에서 선택된 길, 계단, 벽, 문 등은 공간과 공간 사이의 매개물로써 구성에 융통성을 주어 전체가 하나의 풍경을 이루게 하였으며, 삶과 죽음 또한 하나의 풍경처럼 공존하고 있는 것임을 은유하게 하였다. 이번 작업들은 죽음을 직접 경험할 수는 없지만 자신의 삶과는 무관하다고 여겼던 죽음에 대한 인식을 새롭게 함으로써 세계를 바라보는 태도를 재조명 해 보고, 존재를 둘러싼 세계에 대한 사고의 폭을 넓힐 수 있는 계기를 마련하였다.
