은유적인 시각에 의한 식물의 도자조형 연구

Abstract

자연은 인간의 조형활동에 끊임없이 많은 영향을 끼쳤으며 자연이 주는 생명적 이미지는 다양한 방법을 통해 예술가들에게 표현하고자 하는 충동을 유발시키는 대상이 되어왔다. 연구자가 자연의 어떤 부분을 부각시키는가에 따라 감추어진 조형적 요소는 더욱 풍부하게 드러나고 조금만 관심을 가져도 우리에게 전해주는 내면의 진리 또한 가까이 에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 그 중에서도 늘 함께 하지만 빠르게 변화해 가는 일상생활 속에 무감각하게 바라봄으로써 우리 눈에 확연히 드러나 보이지 않는 식물의 위대함을 인식하고 무한한 내면의 소리에 귀를 기울이고자 하는 의지에 의해 식물을 선택하게 되었다. 결국, 모든 대상엔 우리 눈에 보이는 시각적 사물의 상이 전부가 아니라는 전제 속에서 단순한 형상이상의 것을 이끌어내고자 했으며 시각의 초점을 많은 가능성을 내포한 은유성에 맞추었다. 본론에서는 식물이 지닌 내면의 모습들에 관심을 가지고 작업을 전개해 나갔으므로 우리가 인식하지 못하고 지나쳤던 식물의 무한한 힘과 더불어 진취적이고 강인한 생명력 등에 대해서 알아보고 생존과 번식을 위해 모체가 미치지 않는 새로운 곳으로 생애 어느 단계에선가 여행을 해야하는 과정에 대해서도 살펴보았다. 또한 이를 조형화 하는 과정에서, 서로 다른 이미지들이 한 조형물속에 재구성되어 새로운 의미의 차원을 만들어내며 그로 인해 풍부한 해석의 여지와 다양한 연상을 불러일으키는 은유적 개념을 도입했으므로 은유에 대한 일반적 고찰과 거기에서 파생되는 여러 의미와 효과에 대해서 연구하였다. 이와 함께 은유적인 시각을 도입해 독창적인 방법으로 예술작품에 표현한 다른 작가들의 독특한 작품세계도 같이 살펴보았다. 작품의 디자인 과정에서는 식물의 이미지와 그와 공통된 부분을 지닌 다른 이미지와의 결합을 주관적 표현방법으로 나타내어 보는 사람으로부터 다양한 연상을 이끌어내고자 했다. 제작방법은 자유로운 선의 느낌을 살릴 수 있는 물레성형과 판성형, 속파기를 기본으로 다양한 변형을 시도하였으며 자연스런 공간감을 살리고 소성시 변형을 최소화하기 위해 태토는 내화성점토를 사용하였다. 식물이 갖는 이미지를 떠올릴 수 있도록 나무의 껍질과 잎사귀의 잎맥의 느낌이 나는 표면처리를 주로 하였다. 시유는 고화도 유약과 저화도 유약을 동시에 썼고 저화도 유약을 고온에서 소성하기도 하여 독특한 효과를 냈다. 소성은 0.5㎥의 가스가마에서 9시간 동안 900℃를 마침온도로 1차소성을 했고 2차소성은 0.5㎥ 가스가마에서 10시간 동안 1250℃를 마침온도로 산화소성 했다. 3차소성은 0.5㎥가스가마에서 마침온도 1100℃로 7시간에 걸쳐서 소성했다. 이렇게 식물의 강인한 내면세계를 은유화 하여 작품제작을 하면서 다음과 같은 결론을 내릴 수 있었다. 본인은 식물의 감추어진 본질과 내면을 들여다봄으로써 좀더 깊이 식물을 이해하고 알 수 있게 되었으며 그것을 작품으로 연결시켜 다양한 가능성을 모색하는 계기가 되었다. 또한, 다각도로 보려는 이러한 시도는 한 사물안에 풍부한 의미를 찾아낼 수 있는 은유적 관점이 도움이 되리라 생각하며 이는 감상자로 하여금 많은 연상작용을 이끌어 내게 한다. 이러한 것들을 끌어내기 위해서는 먼저 주변에 대한 우리의 시각이 풍부해져야 하는데 모든 사물을 우리 눈에 쉽게 드러나지 않는다고 해서 그저 지나쳐 버린다면 우리주변에서 보는 모든 것들이 점점 더 무의미해지게 된다. 그러나 애정 어린 시각으로 사물을 본다면 주변의 묵묵한, 그러나 잘 보이지 않는 힘들이 우리의 삶을 움직이는 커다란 힘이란 것을 알 수 있게된다. 보는 관점을 좀더 폭넓게 보려고 노력한다면 많은 것이 보이게 되는데 특히 예술가들에게 이러한 시각은 무한한 창조성과 상상력을 제공함을 알 수 있다. 더불어, 표현하고자 하는 생각과 대상을 좀더 설득력 있게 나타내기 위해선 자연스런 점토의 느낌과 함께 형태에 맞는 흙의 표현방법에 대한 모색도 중요한 과제라 인식된다. 점토를 통해 연구자의 주관적 감성표현이 무한함을 느끼면서 앞으로 나올 많은 연구자에게도 도움이 되었으면 한다.;Nature influences the human life incessantly and so it is used frequently in art as a theme for creating. The different imageries of nature have constantly induced artists to express them in different ways. For this study, I have researched on plants, in particular, to express my ideas in clay. Although we are surrounded by them, due to our rapidly changing daily enviroment, we observe it senselessly. Yet we are aware of its greatness, though its presence is not prominently felt. Hence, plants provide infinite inspiration and material for an artist to express the inner emotions, consciousness and concepts. Believing that the sense of sight does not perceive everything that there is to know about an object, I have moved away from what has been understood simply by sight. Perception can create many conceptual possibilities and hence through it we can create metaphorical visions. To begin researching on plants, I have examined the biological aspects of plants and vegetation knowing that at some stage of a plant's life, it travels to live and procreate. For a plant is progressive with a srtong will to live. With this fact in mind, I have researched on metaphorical expressions to incoroporate them in my work with different conceptions. I have examined the works of different artists, who have used similar themes as this study, to express their inner symbols and concepts using different medium in art. The forms of plants have been combined with everyday objects, which I have discovered to resemble certain aspects of the plant which I have chosen to express. The significance of this comparation is to provoke different metaphorical imagery and also for the public to conjure different pictures in their minds. The work has been made using the throwing, slab-building and the modelling methods. In order to keep the flexibility, space and to prevent the alteration of the form in firing, I have used a refactory clay. For to give a plant-like imagery in my work, I have emphazised the plant veins and for the surface design, I have used high-temperature and low-temperature glazes. The low-temperature glazes were fired at a high temperature creating an interesting effect. The work has been fired in a 0.5㎥ gas kiln for 9 hours. The first firing was a biscuit firing reaching a temperature of 900℃. The second firing took 10 hours and was fired to a temperature of 1250℃. This firing was an oxidation. Then the work was fired again to a temperature of 1000℃ and this took 7 hours. After researching and making work for this thesis, I have discovered the importance of observation. We can not live oblivious to our surroundings and simply because an object is not prominently noticeable, we cannot ignore it. Life will remain with any significance if we do not take our enviroment into account. In the end, being aware and taking care of our surroundings, provides our lives with strength and inspiration. Our enviroment is what keeps us alive. Also the openness of the mind is what enables us to perceive many things and for an artist, especially, this state of mind encourages the creation of works without preconceptions but with new and interesting ideas and concepts. This study has broadened my knowledge on the biological aspects of a plant and this will continue to aid my work in developing many metaphorically interesting ideas. Finally, after making my work, I have discovered that in order to express my work effectively in clay, it is important to have a good understanding of the material and to work with its temperaments. Different shapes require different clay bodies, only then is the best result achieved. There are plenty of different expressions and methods to show an artist's imagery and ideas through clay and I believe this study has acknowledged clay's infinite possiblities.
