사각형 오브제의 반복과 변화를 통하여 본 삶의 모습

Abstract

This paper attempts to express the ever-changing phases of our modern life in terms of a repetitive series of rectangular blocks-particularly, the changing process of our life from birth through growth to death which is under the constant influence of scientific- technological advances bringing about disruptive changes in the system of values. To better promote our visual communicative effect, however, an object was employed-rectangular blocks in my case-on the two-dimensional plane together with employ- ment of shadow to enhance the so-called three-dimensional cubism. A daring attempt of this nature is believed to be best suitable for the depiction of images of our modem metropolitan cities. What deserves our special attention in this connection is the employment of repeated rectangular blocks for several important reasons. First, the use of rectangular blocks enables us to depict those innate or undercurrent simplex patterns of our life although they often look very complicated on the surface level. Second, an attempt was made to portray the regimented ways of life of modern men by using a series of rectangular blocks. Third, the arrangement of rectangular blocks in an artistic way was intentionally employed to arouse diversified curiosities or perspectives on the part of careful patrons. An attempt was also made to make use of clay or clay-like thing such as resin or wax as our important material, mainly to facilitate our expression of space- time relationship in the most dynamic way possible due to its flexible formative quality and marginally to make easy the repetitive production of a number of rectangular blocks on a single canvas. In addition, through repetition of rectangular blocks it is made possible to depict all those daily routines of modern men as well as to express their changing ways of life as time passes. The employment of clay as our important material, as mentioned above, is to make the best use of its flexible formative quality and its white color for "white" is most readily colored in many ways due to its unstained quality. Other materials such as wax or resin may also be explainable in terms of their flexible formative quality and naturalness in color. Again, these materials are carefully analyzed and examined from the standpoint of material's quality and formativeness as much as from the viewpoint of their space-time relationship. Finally, a critical survey was made on some of my works which ultimately led me to a re-newed awareness of the importance of patience and steady work.;본 논문에서는 현대라는 공간 속에서 변화하는 인간의 삶의 모습을 제시해 보려고 하였으며, 그 안에서 특히 인간의 생성, 성장, 소멸의 과정과 주위의 영향으로 인한 가치관의 변화 등을 표현해 보려고 하였다. 본인은 시각적인 전달효과를 높이기 위하여 2차원적 평면 공간에다 오브제(object)를 도입하고, 또한 그림자를 이용하여 3차원적 효과를 내려고 시도하였다. 그리고 이러한 효과가 현대 도시의 이미지를 나타내도록 하였다. 특별히 사각형 형태를 사용하여 첫째, 현상적으로 복잡해 보이지만 내면의 기본 틀이나 본질은 같다는 것을 나타내려고 하였고, 둘째, 현대인의 삶이 규격화되고 획일적임을 의미하려 하였으며, 셋째, 그럼에도 불구하고 보는 사람의 환경적 여건에 따라서 다양한 해석을 이끌어 낼 수 있음을 보여주려고 하였다. 본인은 지점토를 중심으로 이루어진 사각형의 반복과 형태의 변화를 통해 시간과 공간에 대한 다각적인 의미에 대해서도 접근을 시도했다. 그리고 사각형의 반복을 통하여 인간의 일상적인 삶의 반복을 표현할 뿐 아니라 시간이 흐름에 따라 변화하는 삶의 모습도 담으려고 하였다. 또한 본인의 작품에 재료선택에 있어서 지점토를 사용한 것은 우선 위에서 언급한 의도와 의미를 잘 나타낼 수 있는 가소성이 있으며 동시에 지점토가 갖는 백색은 다양한 색의 변화를 유발시킬 수 있는 가장 순수한 색이기 때문이다. 그리고 밀랍이나 그밖의 재료를 사용한 것은 그 재료가 가지고 있는 가소성과 은은한 색깔 때문이다. 조형적인 변화와 재료를 통한 시각적인 효과와 공간의 개념에 대해서도 설명하였다. 끝으로 본인의 작품을 분석해 봄으로써 지금까지 해 본 작품에 대한 개념들에 대해 정리의 기회로 삼고, 보다 다양하고 거시적인 시각을 갖고 부단한 노력과 인내의 자세로 보다 깊이 있고 발전된 작품의 세계를 추구해 나가고자 한다.
