Abstract
Noble metal nanoparticles embedded in dielectric matrices have a great potential for nonlinear optical devices due to their large nonlinear optical property in the surface plasmon absorption region. So far most attention was focused on the pure form of noble metals. Recently, experimental studies move on to the mixture of metal particles or alloy form that reveal new interesting optical phenomena, including change of surface plasmon absorption characteristics and nonlinear optical properties. Pure metal nanoclusters in silica thin film were synthesized by the sol-gel method to understand their optical properties. The Ag/Cu nanocluster mixture was prepared in SiO_(2) thin film at the various molar ratio of 1:1, 1:3, and 1:5 through 500℃ heat treatment under H_(2). The high resolution TEM micrograph shows the particle size is distributed broadly covering 1∼10nm with the maximum at 4∼5nm. The absorption spectra were simulated using the bulk Ag/Cu dielectric constants by accommodating the nanocrystal size, and were compared with the measured absorption spectra. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of those nanocluster mixtures have been studied by the degenerate four wave mixing technique. The measured third-order nonlinear susceptibilities, χ^((3)), were on the order of 10^(-8)∼10^(-7) esu. Au and Cu alloy nanoclusters embedded in thin film silica glass were prepared by sol-gel method and cumulative heating procedure at 500∼900℃ in H_(2) atmosphere, as an attempt to search for new nanomaterials. Alloy nanocluster samples were prepared by changing Au/Cu molar ratio as 1 and 4, and the particle size distribution was characterized by TEM. AuCu alloy nanocrystals have 20∼80nm diameter and Au_(4)Cu particles have 40∼100nm. Optical spectra of those samples were recorded in 400∼800nm region in which surface plasmon resonance and interband transition of the metal particles are expected to occur. XRD and TEM analysis shows that Au and Cu do not exist as independent particles, but they form single phase alloy nanocrystals. Lattice parameters of these alloy nanocrystals were calculated from X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction patterns and compared with those of bulk metals.
