물질의 변성을 통한 상징적 표현

Abstract

Modern society is in the dissolved situation of postmodernism in which there is no core part or defined entity. Postmodernists including Jean-Francois Lyotard claim that there exists no singular theoretical discussion which describes every type of social relationship and political practice. They reject the theory as a whole, emphasize pluralism and heterogeneity in historical - political and social ideas as well as in every type of area. Individuals face the confusion of self-identity and the existential situation of uneasiness. They cannot exist without interrelationship with dissolved and pluralized social-cultural phenomena, and they should have subjective self-consciousness and self-logics accepting them with an open mind. An artist should distract this self-logics from art and work of art. In the latest artistic trends, discussions about identity encouraged by the dissolved situation of post-structuralism which is horizontal value system. I try to grope for this identity by chasing the trace of consciousness reflecting an artist's self involved in work of Art. As one of plans, post-structuralist, Jacques Lacan, who claimed that forming self as subject comes from relationship between others, and his theory is analogized to the relationship between an artist and material, examined to solve from the relationship between the objective materials and him. Also, sensing that Lacan's major concept to describe identity and human essence, 'desire', is 'deficit' which cannot be satisfied, I modeled it with the meditating image of conciliating the emptiness and vanity of desire. The conciliating image of desire which penetrates into human essence is suggested as a trace made in the process of transforming material into other one by burning wood and rusting lead. Also this entry of trace made by the alchemic transformation revealing the internal depth of material, I hope this study will be a medium of sharing material and sensitivty on the basis of Gaston Bachelard' s ''materialistic imagination" which suggests that material gain the new character and get over the materialism transformed by the deep relationship between sensitivty that is, human imagination and the materialism. In this work, an Artist reveals his sensitivty through the internal depth of material, more over tries to grope the direction of works which have a profound meaning of inherent idea and self-Identity. Finally, in presentation works, I would like to prepare the expansive works of art, not tied up.;현대 사회는 중심부와 규정된 실체가 없는 포스트모더니즘(postmodernism)의 해체적인 상황 속에 놓여있다. 리요타르(Jean-Franc¸ois Lyotard, 1924∼)를 포함한 포스트모더니스트들은 현대사회에는 모든 형식의 사회관계와 모든 형태의 정치적 실천에 대하여 설명을 제시해주는 단일한 이론적 담론은 존재하지 않는 다고 한다. 이들은 통일성을 이루는 전체적이고 총체적인 이론을 거부하고, 역사·정치·사회개념뿐만 아니라 모든 측면에서 다원성과 이질성을 강조하고 있다. 개인들은 이러한 혼재된 주변의 정황 속에서 자신의 정체에 대한 혼란과 불안감의 실존 상황에 직면해 있다. 개개인은 해체적이고 다원화된 사회·문화 구조적 현상과의 상호연관성을 벗어나서는 존재할 수 없으므로, 이를 열린 자세로 수용하면서도 주체적인 자아의식과 자기논리를 지니고 있어야 한다. 예술가는 이러한 자기 논리를 예술과 예술작품 안에서 도출해내야 할 것이다. 최근의 예술작품의 경향에서 수평적 가치체계인 포스트구조주의(post-structuralism)의 해체론에 힘입은 정체성에 대한 거론이 유행되고 있다. 본인은 이 정체성에 대한 성찰을 예술작품 속에 내재된 예술가의 자아를 투영하려는 의식의 흔적을 추적함으로써 모색하고자 한다. 그 방편으로는 주체로서의 자아의 형성은 타자와의 관계에서 비롯된다는 후기구조주의자, 자크 라캉(Jacques Lacan, 1901∼1981)의 이론을 예술가와 물질과의 대응관계로 유추시켜, 그가 대상화시킨 물질과의 관계항에서 풀어가고자 한다. 또한 라캉이 제시한, 일간의 본질과 정체성을 설명하는 주요개념이 되는 '욕망'이라는 감정이 아무리 충족시키려해도 충족되지 않는 '결핍'임을 감지하고 욕망의 공허함과 허상성을 회유하는 관조적인 심상으로 조형화한다. 이러한 인간본질을 꿰뚫어 통찰하는 회유적 욕망의 심상을, 물질을 다른 물질로 변성시키는 과정-나무를 불에 그을리고, 납을 물에 부식시키는-에서 생성된 흔적으로써 제시한다. 또한 이 흔적의 실체는 물질의 내면적 깊이를 드러내는 연금술적인 변성과정을 거치며, 물질이 인간의 상상력 즉 감성과 대상의 물질성과의 깊은 관계에 의해 변질을 당함으로써, 새로운 성질을 얻게 되고 물질성을 넘어서게 된다는 가스통 바슐라르(Gaston Bachelard, 1884∼1962)의 "물질적 상상력"에 의거해 물질과 감성의 교감의 시학을 이루는 매개물이 되기를 원한다. 본인은 예술가가 물질에 내재된 깊이를 통해 자신의 감성을 드러내고 나아가서, 자신의 내면에 대한 인식과 함께 자아의식과 정체성을 성찰하는데 큰 의의를 가지는 작업방향을 모색하고자 하였다. 마지막으로 본인의 작품 제시를 통해 머무르지 않고, 앞으로 나아갈 수 있는 작업발전의 계기를 마련하고자 한다.
