Abstract
This research analyzes how viewing sports programs on TV networks (TV sports programs) relates to and affects the viewers' attitudes toward sports. Acknowledging the substantial extent of intellectual, emotional and behavioral influences of TV sports programs on their viewers, I analyze how and to what extent the TV sports programs influence viewers in forming their general attitudes toward sports. Taking into consideration the social and psychological influence of TV sports programs, I examine how the selective and repetitive exposures to TV sports programs, through the cognitive process of individual viewers, affect the viewers in forming their attitudes toward sports. This survey was conducted against people within the age group between 10 and 60 including both male and female who currently reside in the Seoul metropolitan area as of 1997, and selected by using the stratified cluster random sampling method. The survey was initially conducted against 632 people. Discarding 134 of these - for reasons of either incomplete or irresponsible response - 498 responses (1 10 direct, 264 indirect, and 124 direct/indirect) were successfully recovered and used for this research. The questionnaires are composed of the following categories: the total number of hours viewing TV sports programs, preference of sports programs, frequency of viewing, motivation for viewing, general attitude toward sports, and general personal information. The statistical methods employed in analyzing the data are the descriptive statistics for analyzing general information, the t-test and the one-way anova for analyzing personal information, and the product-moment correlation, the simple regression and the multiple regression in analyzing the relation between the viewing of TV sports programs and the general attitude toward sports. Through the above survey and subsequent analysis, the following results were found. First, among those surveyed, males scored higher in the areas of the total number of hours viewing TV sports programs, preference of sports programs, frequency of viewing, motivation for viewing, and general attitude toward sports. Among the areas of the amount and the preference of viewing, the degree of excitement, viewer participation, and the frequency of viewing registered statistic differences between the sexes. The total number of hours of viewing differed according to age, education, and income, and viewer participation varied among different levels of education. Among those surveyed, people who participate in sports activity scored higher than those who do not in the areas of the total number of hours viewing TV sports programs, preference of sports programs, frequency of viewing, motivation for viewing, and general attitude toward sports, with marked statistic differences in the areas of the amount and frequency of viewing. Moreover, viewer participation and frequency of and motivation for viewing varied according to different kinds of sports viewers participate in. Second, the total amount of hours of viewing TV sports programs bear directly on general attitude toward sports. In other words, the more the viewer watches TV sports programs, the more positive are their general attitudes toward sports, as are their physical, emotional, personal and social values. Third, individual preference for different kinds of TV sports programs significantly influence the viewers general attitude toward sports. The more positive the attitude toward viewing TV sports programs, and the more defined the motivation for viewing TV sports programs, the more favorable is the general attitude toward sports. Finally, individual preference for different kinds of TV sports programs, more than the total amount of hours of viewing, influences the genera1 attitude toward sports.
