제직에 의한 문의 상징성 표현연구

Abstract

과거부터 현재까지 많은 예술가들은 그들이 표현 불가능한 정신적 현실과 대면하게 될 때 이를 나타내주는 중요한 표현수단으로 상징적 표현을 이용하였다. 상징은 어떤 사물의 의미를 암시하는 동시에 그 사물의 관념들을 표현하게 되며, 이는 심층적, 심리적인 형상화, 개념 작용을 포함하게 되는 의미 부여의 과정으로 간주된다. 우리가 상징의 형식을 사용하는 이유는 상징이 재현하는 사물이 지각될 수 없거나 기성적인 방식으로는 상상될 수 없기 때문이다. 상징은 많은 것을 생략하고 감추어진 형태로서 나타나지만 많은 내용을 함축하고 있으며, 함축된 모든 내용을 더 강하게 전달한다. 상징을 통하여 지각된 의미와 그 표시로써 나타나게 되는 형상의 결합이 바로 작품이 되는 것이다. 문(門)은 외부와 내부를 차단시키고 안과 밖을 구분하는 경계의 역할 뿐 아니라 그 문을 통하여 외부와 내부의 공간을 연속시키는 기능을 한다. 상징적 의미로서의 문은 자신과 타인을 구분함으로서 자신의 존재를 증명하기도 하고, 각각의 개인을 나타냄으로써 문의 개성이 생기며 시간과 공간을 이어주는 역할을 하기도 하는 것이다. 문을 통과하면서 인간들은 자신만의 세계에서 자신이 존재하고 있는 세상과는 다른 새로운 세상으로 나아가는 것이다. 그리하여 인간은 도전의식과 모험정신으로 자신의 삶을 개척하며 살아간다. 사방이 닫혀진 공간에서 문은 희망의 빛을 보여주며, 또한 현재의 자신을 지켜주기도 한다. 자신과 타인과의 관계 속에서 문은 유일하게 열려있는 가시적인 통로이며, 종교적 의미에 있어서는 신과 나만의 연결매체인 것이다. 때때로 문은 정신적으로나 육체적으로 타인 혹은 다른 세상과의 접촉을 막아 인간의식이나 공간에 있어서 한계점을 나타내기도 한다. 하지만 문은 과거, 현재, 미래의 경계선인 동시에 통과라는 전이(轉移)가 가능한 공간 이행의 상징이며, 매개체인 것이다. 본 연구는 이런 문의 상징적 의미의 연속성을 표현하는데 그 목적이 있다. 창호의 이미지를 형상화한 작품은 문의 상징적 의미인 인간상호간의 교류와 연속성을 표현하는데 효과적이다. 작품제작은 문에 대한 이론적 배경을 고찰해 봄으로써 그 본질적 작품의 흐름을 계획하였고, 제작 방법은 재료에 있어서는 반투명한 테이프사와 투명한 테이프사를 사용하였다. 일상적인 재료인 테이프사를 사용하므로써 현재 우리가 살고 있는 시대상을 반영하고 즉흥적이고 일시적인 느낌들을 반영하고자 하였다. 날실의 변화를 통해 제직에 의해 나타나는 날실과 씨실에 의한 조형표현을 하고자 하였다. 문이 안과 밖이라는 상대적 개념을 갖고 있는 것과 같이 인간이 문을 통해 느끼는 상반된 심상들을 흑백의 색채를 통해 표현하였다. 문이 열린 상태와 닫힌 상태를 동시에 나타내기 위해 제직과 비제직을 이용하였다. 연구한 결과로 인간의 삶속에서 끊임없이 계속되는 안에 있는 자신과 밖에 존재하는 자신이라는 인간의 양면성을 문이 가지는 인간과 시간, 공간 사이를 연결시켜주는 연속성이라는 상징적 의미를 통해 제직에 의해 나타내고자 하였다. 그리하여 제작된 작품들이 관람자들에게 눈을 통해서만 보여지는 것이 아니라, 그들이 각각의 피스(Piece)들 속으로 들어와 작가의 생각에 공감하고, 관람자만의 또 다른 문을 만들도록 유도하려 하였다.;A large number of artists have used the symbolic expression as a significant means to present the reality when facing the mental reality which is impossible to be easily expressed by them. Symbol suggests not only the meaning of things but also the conception of them. This is the process of putting meanings, including psychological shaping and conceptualization. The reason we use the form of symbol is the thing that symbol redemonstrates is unrecognizable or impossible to be imagined by way of outmoded methods. Symbol abbreviates many components of a thing and hides the main components in it. However, it contains an mount of connotations, and it delivers all of contents implicated more firmly. The combination of the meaning through symbol and the shape represented through the meaning turns out to be a piece of artistic work. The door not only separates the outside from the inside, acting as a boundary, but also connects the external and internal space. The door as symbolic implication seperates a being from another being thus proving its existence and serves as a bridge in connecting time and space by representing each individual. Through the door, man approach the new world that is different from the internal world of one's own existence. Thus one lives one's lives, ready for challenges and armed with a spirit of adventure. In a closed space, the door symbolizes hope and also protects oneself as is. The door is the only open and visible passage in the relationship between self and others. It is also the only means of connection between God and self in a religious sense. Sometimes the door psychologically and physically prevents contact with others or the rest of the world, creating limits to human consciousness and space. But the door serves as a boundary for the past, present, and future, and it is a medium and a symbol of passage through time and space at the same time. This study aims to express the continuity in the symbolic connotation of doors. The characteristic of chung-ho is an effective medium to express the symbolic connotation of relationship and continuity. The art works were conceptualized by reviewing the theoritical background on the symbolism of doors. The materials used are semi and ordinary transparent ribbon tapes to symbolize the internal and external world. The common material of tape was used for the purpose of reflecting the contemporary society and extemporaneous sentiment. The change of warps is geared towards representing formative expression by means of weaving with warps and woofs. Like the door that contains the contrary concept composed of the internal and external, the contrary image felt by men through the door is expressed by way of the color of black and white. To express both the open and closed states, woven and non woven forms are used. In conclusion, the works express the passage of time though the symbolic meaning of doors. This door acts as the mediator between man, time and space. The works, created with these concepts in mind, not only aim to be a visual conception but are intended to lead spectators into the works to comprehend the aspiration of the artist and create a door of their own.
