링컨 컬스타인(Lincoln kirstein)의 예술 지원이 미국 발레계에 미친 영향

Abstract

본 논문은 뉴욕시티 발레단의 총감독(General Director)이자, 아메리칸 발레 학교의 교장으로 활동한 링컨 컬스타인(Lincoln Kirstein)의 생애와 예술에 대한 지원이 미국 발레계에 미친 영향을 살펴봄으로써 발레계에서 예술지원이 갖는 중요성과 의미를 고찰하는데 목적을 두었다. 이에 먼저 컬스타인이 미국 발레계에 미친 영향을 살펴봄에 있어서 이론적 배경으로 그의 주된 임무였던 예술행정가의 역할과 개념을 연구하였고, 예술 행정과 무용예술을 관련지어 무용행정을 역사적으로 고찰해 보았고, 그런 다음 무용역사를 통해서 예술행정가의 예술지원 경향을 연구하였다. 링컨 컬스타인은 미국에서의 발레정착과 발달과정에 여러 방면으로 영향을 미쳤는데, 첫째로 최초의 미국 클래식 발레학교로 인정받고 있는 아메리칸 발레학교를 설립해서 제1세대 무용수와 안무가를 배출하여 발레의 기반을 닦았다. 두 번째로 뉴욕시티 발레단의 전신인 발레 캐러반과 발레 소사이어티를 창단해서 신인 안무자를 양성하고, 여러 분야의 예술가들을 실험적인 작품 제작에 참여시켜 안무가의 창작의욕을 고취시켰음은 물론, 자국의 정서에 맞는 민족발레를 제작해서 순회 공연함으로써 발레의 대중화에 기여했다. 세 번째로 뉴욕시티 발레단의 총감독으로 재직하면서 각 재단들의 기부금을 받아내서 무용단의 유지기금을 확보하고, 효율적으로 운영진을 관리하는 등 뛰어난 행정 수완능력으로 이 발레단이 모범적인 운영체계를 갖추며, 세계적인 발레단으로 성장하는데 기여했다. 네 번째, 무용에 관한 해박한 지식으로 무용사에 관한 책을 저술하여 무용연구의 기초를 다질 수 있게 했으며, 역사적인 가치를 지닌 무용자료들을 수집해서 뉴욕 공공 도서관에 기증함으로써 미국이 무용도서 대국이 되는 기틀을 마련했다. 이렇듯 그는 디아길레프 사망 이후 유럽에서는 쇠퇴일로에 있던 발레를 미국적인 예술로 다시 태어나게 해서 미국의 예술형식의 하나가 될 수 있도록 하였다. 비록 뉴욕 시티발레단을 그가 직접 경영하지는 않았지만 그의 지휘아래 각 분야의 운영진들의 헌신적인 노력이 밑받침이 되어 대 발레단이 될 수 있었다. 이상과 같이 살펴본 결과 링컨 컬스타인은 설립자, 후원자, 집필가, 수집가로서 미국 발레계에 유래없는 지원과 역할을 통해 미국 발레 발전에 크게 기여했다. 이는 그의 발레에 대한 열의와 깊은 관심에서 비롯된 것으로, 부와 비젼있는 안목, 다양한 예술분야에 대한 해박한 지식이 결부되어 성취되어진 결실이다. 본 연구를 통해서 발레단을 운영하고 유지하는데 있어서 기금의 확보는 매우 어렵고도 중요한 문제임을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 재정 문제는 미국 뿐만 아니라 우리나라도 겪고 있는 문제로, 현재 우리나라 무용계는 자금의 확보 및 전문적인 운영에 어려움을 겪고 있고, 발레 발전의 근저가 되는 전문적인 무용학교가 전무한 상태이다. 이런 상황에서 정부 차원의 적극적인 지원과 무용계에 관심을 갖는 개인, 기업들의 지원이 적극적으로 이루어진다면 무용 계의 앞날은 밝으리라 사료된다.;The purpose of this thesis is to consider the importance and meaning of art support in ballet world as seeing the effect of the life and art support of Lincoln Kirstein who was both general director of the New York City Ballet and principal of the School of American Ballet. First, I studied the role and the concept of Art Administration that was his main task as the theorical background in seeing the effect of Lincoln Kirstein's art to American ballet world. Second, I considered historically Ballet Administration in connection of Art Administration and Art Ballet, and then studied the trend of art support of Art Administration through the history of dance. Lincoln Kirstein influenced on many respects of the settlement and development of ballet. First, he founded the American Ballet School that has been approved as the first classic ballet school in America and gained a firm foothold of ballet as producing the first generation of dancers and dance directors. Second, he established the Ballet Caravan and the Ballet Society, which had become the New York City Ballet later, and grew new dance directors. Also, he not only inspired the creative desire of dance directors as he made artists in many field participate in producing a experimental works, but also contributed to popularization of ballet by producing the Native Ballet that suited each nation's taste and by doing a road show. Third, holding as the general director of the New York City Ballet, he contributed to prepare typical operating system and to grow to a worldwide ballet company by excellent administrative ability such as securing the upkeep expenses of a ballet company by making a collection from each foundation and by administrating efficiently a management. and so on. Forth, he made the basis of dance study established by writing a book on the history of dance with profound knowledge on dance, and laid the groundwork that America became the big power for books on dance by donating the historical data that he had collected to the New York Public Museum. Like this, he had ballet that was on the decline in Europe since the death of Diaglev be born again as a American art, and made it one of the American art style. Though he didn't directly manage the New York City Ballet, it could be one of the greatest ballet companies with devoted effort of' managements in each field under his conduct. As mentioned above, Lincoln Kirstein made a great contribution to development of American ballet with unprecedented supports and roles in American ballet world as a founder, sponsor, writer and collector. As this originated in his enthusiasm and deep concern about ballet, it is a result that was accomplished by connecting his wealth with vision with profound knowledge on various arts. Through this study, we can see that securing a fund is a very difficult and important matter to manage and maintain a ballet company. This financial problem is not only in America but also in Korea. At present, our dance has suffered in the security a fund and professional management. Also, it is in the situation that is wholly lacking a professional dance school that became the basis of development of ballet. In this situation, if a positive support of a government and a support of individuals and enterprises that have concern with dance, I think the future of dance field will be bright.
