폴 테일러와 얼윈 니꼴라이의 1950년대 안무적 경향

Abstract

인류 역사를 고찰해 보면 그 시대속에서 유동적으로 변화하는 무용이 존속해 있음을 알 수 있다. 이러한 무용의 성격은 그 시대적, 문화적인 배경의 영향을 받아 왔으며, 변화라는 개념속에서 항상 새로움을 추구하였다. 제2차 세계대전 이후의 현대무용은 1930년대와 1940년대의 현대 무용속에서 표현된 사실표현적인 인간중심의 내면심리를 그리는 작품의 복잡하고 심각한 내용에서 벗어나 새로움을 추구하는 의도에서 시작되었다고 볼 수 있다. 1940년대말에서 1950년대 전반에 일어났던 예술사조를 살펴보면, 미술계에서 일어났던 추상표현주의적 시각을 찾아볼 수 있다. 새로움의 시도로 나타나기 시작한 추상표현적인 시 각은 미국의 독립적이며 대표적인 현대무용속에서도 변화의 성격을 가지고 나타났기 때문이다. 따라서 본 논문의 목적은 1950년대 미국현대무용계에서 나타나는 추상표현적인 무용의 특성을 연구함으로써 그들의 새로운 무용경향의 시각을 분석해 내는 것이다. 이를 위하여 본 연구는 새로운 현대 무용의 관점을 50년대 예술의 대표적 미적표현인 추상표현적인 시각으로 다루었다. 그 시대의 흐름에 영향을 받은 미국현대무용의 성향에 나타난 작품특성들을 추출해 내기 위하여 50년대 미국현대무용계에서 대표적으로 활동한 폴 테일러(Paul Taylor)와 얼윈 니꼴라이(Alwin Nikolais)의 작품을 그 분석대상으로 선정하였으며 작품의 내용, 동작의 역할과 성격, 그리고 구성요소의 사용에 대하여 연구하였다. 이들의 작풍특성 비교에서 테일러는 움직임에 있어 반표현적인 성향이 강하게 나타나고, 니꼴라이는 구성요소의 활용에 중점을 둔 극장용 작품의 특성이 두드러진다. 하지만 그들의 50년대 전반적인 작품들의 특성들을 살펴보면 그 시대를 반영하는 새로운 무용의 특성들이 나타난다. 즉 50년대를 대표하는 미적 표현인 추상성의 표현과 무용동작을 특징으로 하여 표현적인 포즈보다는 과정이 엿보이는 연결동작을 사용하였고, 무대구성요소의 활용을 표현하였다. 따라서 그들의 작품에 이러한 안무의 특성들이 두드러지게 나타남을 볼 때 50년대에 이들이 주도적으로 보여준 미국현대무용의 흐름을 알 수 있었다.;When we investigate human history we recognize that changeable vallet trend flexible with the period existing in each period. This characteristic of vallet has been influenced by its cultural background and has sought new ones in the idea of change. It can be considered that modern ballet after the Second World War has started with the intention of seeking new ones from the complex and serious contents to draw the inner mind expressed in the modern ballet in 1930's and 1940's. Considering the art trend from the end of 1940's to the half of 1950's we can see that the sight of abstract expression were established in the art circles. The sight of abstract expression which started to attempt new things showed its appearance in the independent and representative modern ballet of America with the characteristic of innovation. Therefore the purpose of this study is to analyze the new American ballet trend in 1950's by the investigation of the abstract expressive methods of modern American ballet circles in 1950's. And for this investigation, this study deals the new sight of modern ballet in the sight of abstract expression which tan be said as the representative art expression in 1950's. This study has chosen the works of Paul Taylor and Alwin Nikolais to analyze for the investigation and examined the contents of the works, the roles and figures of the actions and the use of the structural elements so that the characteristics of works showed in the tendency of modern American ballet circles influenced by the periodical current can be extracted. Comparing the characteristics of Taylor and Nikolais's works, it is showed that Taylor expressed anti-expression trend in action but Nikolais expressed the remarkable characteristic of his works for theaters focused on the use of structural elements. But considering the general characteristics of their works in 1950's, new features of the ballet reflecting the period can be showed. In other words, instead of expressive poses with the features of abstract expressions and ballet movement representing artistic expression in 1950's, they used connection movements observed as processes and expressed the use of the structural elements of stages. Hence we can recognize the trend of modem American ballet they showed initiatively in 1950's by the understanding of the features of their choreography.
